Spoken like a true Texan!

It's like a whole other country.

Not a country, per say...more like a few rungs down on the evolutionary ladder.

Has anyone noticed that the posters that don't like Wesley Willis seem really jaded? Perhaps they would be nicer people if they could open their minds to the kind of stuff he did.

I'm happy just knowing that people like Wesley Willis exist!

Seriously folks WW rocked. Genius is simpley looking at something from a totally new point of view. Man, he did that!

Myrna - I have a sister named Myrna. You are pretty damn cool. And seeing your pic has got me all hot. I feel like something out of Joe Dirt. I am writing a WW style song called "Farker Girl" as I type this.

There is no god...farewell Wesley.

Wesley will be missed. You know, he did whoop Superman AND Batman's ass, but however, Birdman kicked his ass. Birdman! Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.

But anyway, he'll be missed. He was an inspiration to all DIY indie artists.

2003-08-22 05:09:20 PM
Sucks so much, I really liked him. Still listen to Fabian Road Warrior. I had a chance to see him play in 2002 but missed it. Sucks big time.

The '/officially adding "oblivious" to "ignorant," "lazy" and "disrespectful." comment was about me. I was told to scroll up and find MP3's that were posted. Didn't find any so he found some. Proceeded to continue to flame me. Or at least that is what I thought, cause most of the flames were directed at me!

/i am sure they were flames of love .... boy do I love a good flame war!!!

OK I'm still oblivious but at least the voices have stopped.

He could have made Flock of Seagulls famous, if only he had a better haircut.

This is too amazing.

Just last night I finished a run at the NYC Fringe, and after the show was over, I said, "Rock over London... Rock on Chicago... Maxwell House... Good to the last drop."

I had no idea he'd died hours before.

Another guy in the show laughed, and I asked if he knew why that was funny, and if he'd heard of WW. Since he hadn't, I told him a little bit about what I remember from his career -- that he used to hang around Chicago and play songs on his Casio, a few bigger musicians got wind of him (Billy Corgan vaguely comes to mind) and he eventually got a record deal out.

My friend from the show thought the story was cool, but he was a little frustrated that WW got a record deal, based on how I described his music. I said I understood, but offered that WW had more than paid his dues and played enough free shows, and had a genuine, unique voice enough so to deserve a shot, unlike, say, a totally manufactured group like N*SYNC.

It got me to understand why I loved his stuff in the first place, back when I first heard him back in college. He really was completely honest as an artist, and while he didn't have the chops or the voice, you really got a sense that he was interested in sharing his life with anyone who wanted to listen to his music.

There will literally never be another artist like Wesley Willis. He was definitely a one-of-a-kind.

Rock over London.
Rock on, Chicago.

2003-08-22 05:36:13 PM
*sniff* i'll never get to see him live in concert now. RIP

2003-08-22 05:44:04 PM
Whoa, I didn't expect to read that today. RIP Wesley.

2003-08-22 05:46:49 PM
One of my friends brothers got to meet him and got his autograph. Its cool that someone with the problems he had was able to make some money. R.I.P. W.W.

2003-08-22 05:48:30 PM
Wow.

It took my already depressing day and pushed it down further.

We will be missed.

2003-08-22 05:53:22 PM
so sad! I love Wesley. His music was my favorite thing to play to get everyone out of my house when the party was over.

2003-08-22 05:56:05 PM
Did someone shoot him in the ass?

2003-08-22 05:58:21 PM
RIP Wes,

You brought more joy than you could ever know.

Rest in peace, man. Avoid those hell trips.

His song, the Ghostbusters Got Busted was abouta trip he took up here to Houghton. Missed that party unfortunately, but it got busted up by the cops way early on anyhow.

2003-08-22 06:22:16 PM
I got tired of reading all the flaming back and forth. :(

I've heard a few of his songs. I apparently didn't "get it". I never really liked them.

*yawn*

My wifes band opened for him in Chicago. He will surely be missed.

Use to hear W.W. on Mancow back in the 103.5 FM days when he'd sing "The Mancow SHOW! The Mancow SHOW!" over and over. :)

Not just local Chicago legends The Smashing Pumpkins have heard of Wesley.... on January 8, 1995 during Pearl Jam's nationally syndicated "Self-Pollution Radio" broadcast they played Wesley's "They Threw Me Out Of Church" and that's where I first heard of the legend that is WW.

He is a Genius and the world is sadder for his loss today. RIP to a legend.

Glad to hear that he is considered a musical genius.

This means that I am a computer genius because I am able to post this comment. This is great news for me

He knew three chords. Take that, Beethoven.

2003-08-22 07:10:31 PM
Anyone who thinks that WW was about "laughing at the fat disabled guy" absolutely doesn't get it. Wesley was a man who faced more hardship than anyone on Fark could imagine (even the worst troll here has some kind of computer access and can type (more or less) a coherent sentence).

Here was an obese homeless man from a background of horrific poverty and abuse who literally had voices in his head yelling at him 24/7. Despite all of this he decided he was going to be a rock star, and spent every waking moment of his life fighting his demons, and living his dream, whether he was playing a concert for hundreds of fans, or getting thrown off a bus for causing a public disturbance.

What anyone thinks of his music is completely irrelevant, he showed more testicular fortitude than any artist I've heard in frequent rotation on the mainstream radio.

A lot of people give up on their dreams because they seem unrealistic, or difficult - If I'm ever tempted to quit, I'll try to remember that today, a lot of people worldwide are mourning the death of a schizophrenic homeless black man from Chicago, who made a mark simply because he didn't stop fighting.

I'd have called it a day after Al Capone stole my Hot Rod, personally.

I really do hope there is a Rock-and-roll heaven, 'cause I can't think of anyone who deserves to be there more.

wesley was an accidental genius, if you're a fan of the non sequitur. and he loved that old magikist sign as much as i did.

2003-08-22 07:16:14 PM
DRW I'm not sure Wesley knew one chord (see above). But Joey Ramone only knew three chords, and few would argue he didn't have a huge influence on the evolution of modern rock.

A lot of times what you do with the skills you have is far more important than what those skills actually are.

I lived in the Chicago area until '95 working in a video store. Back then, Wesley used to sleep on my store manager's couch and play parties in the area. I'm happy to say I was there the night he premiered "Suck a Camel's Ass" to a living room full of intoxicated miscreants.

My copies of "Reverend Norb #1 & 2" are autographed as is my numbered "Prisonshake" - handstamped #187.

I moved to LA in the fall of '95 and watched in wonder as Wesley became famous. Then, in 1997, I read that Wesley was playing the Viper Room.

Waiting for the show to begin, I saw Wesley enter the club and retreat to a side booth. Thinking there was no way the guy would remember me from two years back, I approached his table cautiously.

Wesley looked up, saw me, and asked, "Did you fly here tonight?" I explained that I had actually moved from Chicago two years back, and he graced me with some of the warmest headbutts ever shared between two men.

My friend told me later that the entire Viper Room stared in stunned silence as Wesley held me to his forehead shouting "RAAAH" at the top of his lungs until I joined in.

The guy was like no other. Knowing the unbelievable hardship he endured, I will never stop smiling at the fact he became precisely what he dreamed he could be: a rock 'n' roll superstar.

Rock over London. Rock on Chicago. Video Adventure: It's the personal service and inspired selection.

God bless you, Wes.
