I agree. Government should always dictate what people can and can't say.

We're all also highly impressed that you're too cool for facebook

Facebook sucks. Twitter sucks. This decision by the French government sucks. What a vortex of suck.

In a way I am too. I'm kind of getting tired of hearing "What you are saying about story X on Facebook" after every goddamn story on the news. Honestly, I don't care what Phil from Topeka thinks about cuts to medicare. Just give me the news for fark's sake.

Indeed. What is Fark, really, but Facebook for people who pretend not to care about what other people think about while riding the bus?

I've actually had to tell my older neighbors(as in 60+) that I have no FB or twitter accounts,...and they look at me like I'm anti-social.

In fact,..all the people I know that are on them,...are that age,...or women in 30's,..divorced with kids....and they have their KIDS on them(Sub teenagers).

Hate all the damn linkage now to Friendface and Twitcher.....because I block them at the router and it hangs pages occasionally,..and when it does often enough,..I remove them from favs.

If it were a news station majority-owned by the government, I'd have no problem with this. As for privately held stations, I think a better option would be to limit the amount of commercial advertising per block of time, such as no more than 5 minutes per 30 minutes of airtime. Pimp your Facebook or Twitter accounts? Counts towards your time. Overlay those stupid logos and animations in the bottom corner of the screen? Again, counts towards your time.

France does this. They're actively trying to preserve the language in its "classic" form rather than let it evolve like any other language, ever. Stuff like this is part of that attempt -- the media was dangerously close to adding two words to the French lexicon without permission.

If it's banned only from NEWS broadcasts, I say hell yeah to this.

Everytime CNN mentions facebook or twitter I want to punch them in the face.

2011-06-04 02:45:58 PM
Facebook says that their number one goal is to get people to spend more time on their site.

Every time I go there, I can't get out fast enough. It feels lame. Some dude of a friend of one of my friends sister in law logs on and says some bullshiat like, "Go Hawks" and that's it. Oh yeah, and he's got a couple likes next to it.

I am looking at that, and I what to go flywheel loose balls ass crazy and just flip out.
I kinda get that strange feeling, you know, that feeling you used to get when you where about 3 years old when your mother used to play with your butt hole.

You COULD just not to go to Facebook and Twitter. I don't see why you need to block them at the router. It's not like they're going to come after you.

This seems to be less about language preservation and more about commercial promotion. I read nothing about making them translate it to Visage-livre.

Sadly this is a futile effort by France. Twitter and Facebook have won. They are slowly destroying what little was left of journalistic standards by making it a race to who can tweet breaking news first, rather than who gets the best most informative story out, who finds out the piece of information that wasn't directly on the surface. I started my college career thinking I wanted to be a journalist... but I just don't have it in me to try and win the Twitter race.

Well, you either believe in free speech or you do not.

So I suppose they'll no longer be able to mention the name of any commercial enterprise? "Disaster in the Gull today as an oil rig operated by a large, well-known oil company exploded and sank." Imagine having to get information from the companies involved and the government.

Yes, they DO come after you and AT you. They are on every commercial now, "LINK US ON FACEBOOK AND TWITTER! TEE HEE!!!". Up at the top of THIS thread? Yep Facebook and twitter links.

Right there. In your face. Coming after you. If you don't click them, a very large black dude will come over and fark you in your ASS!

See,...this is wrong,....sites that link back in anyway,..are partners with and share revenue with them...so they both (I think) get page impressions and "click through" revenue.

I just do it,because I don't use them,..so why should I pay them.

Twitter pays stars to tweet,...and again,..could care less....so why help?

vlakorados: Is this because they refuse to use English words that sully their precious Francais? What will they come up with to replace them?

No, it's just a very simple, and very good, idea to stop journalists resorting to twitter and facebook. I hate watching the news and being told some random morons opinion on a matter that he tweeted, or said in a facebook group. Every single random moron out there posting their opinions are worthless idiots with pointless opinions which are usually wrong. If you don't agree with me then that just proves my point.

I'm not anti-facebook or twitter, I do use them, but I don't think we should kid ourselves into thinking that because we can hear what Deborah, 42 - recently married to John in Lincoln, with 1 child, 4 puppies and a combined household income of £42,510 after tax, thinks about safety regulations needing bolstering to stop fuel depot fires, that her opinion is worth anything whatsoever, because it's not, it's stupid and wrong.

I'm not an economist, so if I tweeted something about economics you would be right to either ignore me or tell me to stick to what I know. This is just cutting them off at the source, so French people never have to hear what Jacques from Montpellier thinks of Syria.

I am an expert on hating stupid people, so you can't ignore what I just said, because it's true, everyone is stupid. Except you, you're not stupid.

/think I won them back at the end...

Really. I don't condone censorship but I'm so Goddammed tired of hearing about Facebook and Twitter. And no, I'm not some old bastard technophobe. I'm a software developer and motion graphics designer who uses state of the art stuff. I'm just sick of hearing about those two pieces of technology.

And texting. I farking hate texting.

If it's not curtailed, English will eventually corrupt evey other language on the planet. I can only speak for German and Mandarin but it's not just new words being added - grammatical structures are also being changed because they are "cooler" when expressed in the American style. It destroys the beauty, flow, logic of the speech. The beauty and cultural importance of language is in its own roots, history, stories therein, logical reasoning, artistic construction, the way in which you (can) understand and describe the world and ultimately how you think. Yes, all languages have evolved. But in the era of globalization, English and its cultural impact is another phenomenon entirely. If you're not a linguist, you probably couldn't care less, but there's more to it than just "letting a few words in". Viva la France.
