I Love Pawn Stars!

The Old Man should have his own blog where he just berates different celebrities.

Chumly should star in a new remake of Scooby Doo.

And the expert who evaluates all the guns should have his own show about weapons.

pawn stars and the like (especially american pickers) makes me want to drop cable altogether. I thought the history channel had hit rock bottom with ice road truckers, but I was proven wrong.

I enjoy Pawn Stars except for the faux drama they to create. Plus, everyone except for Rick should be dragged outside and shot. It isn't the most history related show, but it's better than Top Shot or Ax Men. It reminds me a show (I think it was on the History Channel) a long time ago where they would randomly select artifacts in a museum and trace its history and how it got to its current destination.

put me in the category of those that like 'Pawn Stars". And if you are not learning some history while watching it, you are not paying attention. History isn't all about Lincoln being the first president and Washington being assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald.

Buying from pawn shops is a great way to keep crime rates high in that area.

Pawn Stars is good tv. Especially when they have Houdini artifacts or any time they take something to Rick Dale's.

American Pickers is decent. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a good way to kill an hour.
American Restoration is kickass. I love watching the process of restoring an item to the way it was.

After this we get into the territory pawn stars forged in other networks. Auction Kings on Discovery is love. Auction Hunters on Spike is decent the way Pickers is decent. Storage Wars is just bad.

The best is the post assrape interview where the customer tries to justify getting $20 for something the "expert" just said was worth $5,000.

It's usually something like, "well I didn't know how much it was worth coming in, so I'm just glad to walk out of here with something."

Because the first place you should go when you have some valuable item you want to sell is the pawn shop. I'll never understand this "criticism". The show is mostly staged and they've definitely gotten away from the bits where the customer would storm off, pissed that they didn't want his doodad for the expected price, but the 'reality' is still there. They are in the buying and selling business, not the collecting business. That they tend to stick it to the folks who want to get a few dollars to hit the casinos and aren't in the best bargaining position isn't their fault -- it's by design.

I refuse to watch the new versions of the Drew Carey show that Spielberg put on his "Reruns..My Favorites" VHS expansion. No way Carey shot first.

I have a storage unit with my excess junk and told the manager of the place about Storage Wars, since it's set in SoCal and that's where I live. He watched it and said the show is a load of B.S. with all of the hidden treasures people find. He's had his own auctions and all people find is junk that the owner abandoned because it wasn't worth picking up.

My money says they get an appearance fee on top of the sale. Or just love being on TV. Hey, it's a fun little show, and anyone who biatches about these poor sellers not getting enough doesn't realize that going to a PAWN SHOP will never mean you're being paid what something is worth.

/I really want this thread in my shop, but I have to get the BEST possible price!

I have worked in a pawn shop for about 6 years now and maybe 4% of the items are stolen. Better yet, the items that are found to be stolen are generally returned to the rightful owner at no cost to them.

The thing I like about Pawn Stars is that its kind of an anti Antiques Roadshow. Roadshow had a tendency to only show people that had rare and valuable things, and lead many, many morons to believe that any old crap they had around their house was worth thousands of dollars (having gone to two free antique appraisal things I can testify to this first hand-dumbasses arguing with the appraisers). Pawn Stars pretty much dispels all that, you'll see someone walk in with something they think is gonna let them retire at 30 and get they offered 20$ for it... if its not actually a fake.

2011-06-04 01:36:38 PM
And as much as I enjoy the show as entertainment, it is not Emmy-worthy in the Reality Non-Competition category. While most (or all) eligible shows are scripted to a point, it's just too obvious to my eye in their case. Well done and entertaining, but c'mon. "I want to call a buddy to look at this" who is obviously waiting outside. Rick sees the things way in advance so he can do research and become an "expert". ("What most people don't know about lead coins from Eritrea is that they first were minted in 1704...") Fun show, but not Emmy-worthy.

I'd throw the award at Dirty Jobs or Mythbusters WAY before Pawn Stars.

/and I'd throw a pair of Golden Globes at Brandi from Storage Wars. Mamma Mia!

They don't show all the shiat buys, any more than they show COPS driving around for 7.5 hours of their shift getting leg cramps.

Friends own a storage unit location.
One unit was $750 in the rears after multiple reminders.
Closed on the unit and there was a full head mount of a Moose worth thousands.

But they don't!

A week or so ago I caught an episode where a woman came in with a Faberge brooch. She asked for $2,000.

Rick said he was willing to give her $2,000, but couldn't. Instead, he offered her $15,000. It was a quite a shock for this lady.

If anything, and it is probably because they are on tv, they go out of their way to make sure they give everyone a fair price.

I know that he said it's worth an Emmy, but that's at auction, and maybe you'll get that for it. I gotta make a profit, and there's not much of a market for Emmys, so I could be sitting on this thing for a long time. I can give you a Bronze Telly, and that's it.

If you're going into a pawn shop, whatever it is that you have can't be that close to your heart. If you want retail value from a collector, sell the shiat on eBay and take the risk of throwing your money away. A pawn shop is a place where you can go sell your shiat for cash. Are you going to get top dollar? No. That's the price you pay for convenience.

Bingo. When I tell war stories, I don't tell you about the endless hours I sit around at auction, stand in line, and spend in the car traveling. I don't tell you about the $50 item I bought for $20.

The story I tell is about this morning, when I went to a sale of crap college students left behind when they moved out of their dorms and bought -for a buck!- a signed copy of the first printing of The Audacity of Hope by Barack H Obama.

Yeah thats what I am thinking about these idiots in this thread. Its not like they just give people what its worth, they are a business and have to make money.

I wonder if some of these idiots think all the stores sell their goods at cost to the store? More than likely they just have no idea how running a business is supposed to work.
