whidbey: The music tab was axed because nobody goes there. Like most of the specialized forums.

You have stats on that? I can name plenty of farkers who were regular posters. And a anecdotal peek at the "all" tab shows stats where the activity is very similar to the showbiz and geek tabs, and more than the business tab.

whidbey: That's all the outrage you can muster?

It's not outrage, it is an opinion. Believe it or not, not every farker is an asshole.

Wow! I had no idea until I saw the "warning" today that you had changed the site or were even thinking of redesigning the site.

Nicely done. I barely even noticed the transition.

I dunno, man. Seems like every music thread was dead by the time I browsed it.

Only die-hard Farkers who scour every inch of the site were posting there.

Believe it or not, not every farker is an asshole.

The ones who are complaining about basically nothing are kind of annoying, though.

I'm afraid to report I've only read the last 50 or so comments (refuse to dig through 800+ comments), but I've got a cosmetic issue with the website.

Google Chrome (11.0.696.71) on Windows Vista 32-bit has issues with the selected top menu item. I'm seeing issues with the top menu selection ('Fark', 'TotalFark', 'myFark', etc.). The selected item has a one-pixel wide grey line that matches the menu item background. In addition, the image or method of drawing the selected item blurs the line between the selected and unselected item. There's a clear difference between the bottom of the selected item and the bottom of the unselected item.

Not sure if this is the proper way to contact anyone, but, it is a thread about the redesign.

/What browsers did they test this on before release?

2011-06-01 07:41:52 PM
I don't mind the grey...the blue was just as lame. And I LOVE the larger default font size, but I would prefer a bit more contrast between the letters and the background. The former are not black enough and the latter has too much grey in it.

okay, actual question about the site layout

today i had to go back to the previous layout to go to the headline search. i still cant find the headline search button in the newfark layout

is it there at all? I can't tell.

Oh, and I was trying to find a thread i don't remember what it was about because of a post i made and wanted for my archives and is there a way i can look up all the TFD threads for that one day? if not, i want one pls

shoegaze99: Improve it how? By expecting that a slew of trolling morons and mods who go for the easy, same-old-same-old every time are going to change overnight?

Again, how is this unique to the music tab?

shoegaze99: Besides, you didn't lose anything. The same old music links will still be posted, just in a slightly different spot. Big deal.

My opinion: there will be fewer as a result, and people interested in music links won't want to wade though the people magazine celebrity crap that is the bread and butter of the showbiz tab.

shoegaze99: And really, come on. Quality content and discussion in the Fark music tab? When did this happen? I must have been off that day.

IMHO there was plenty of great discussion in the music tab, but I won't argue that with you; I will say the idea that the music tab was somehow populated with lower quality threads than the other areas is a Bevets-level belief.

shoegaze99: I can see how someone might think that way, assuming they never did much reading outside the music and showbiz tabs. But miraculously, Fark manages to drag itself kicking and screaming into some decent discussion, quality content, and humor that gets beyond the same old Jack White/U2/Nickelback/etc etc trolls.

You sound like those guys that go into baseball threads and post how baseball sucks.

Best way to contact someone is to send in a Farkback. If you can post screenshots somewhere online, that'd be great. Otherwise you'll get an email reply to your Farkback and you reply with attached screenshots.

Yes, I agree. Opinions on changes to fark have no business in a thread whose title is re:discussing the changes to fark. Especially if they are different than yours.

But your opinion is a knee-jerk reaction with absolutely nothing to support it. Fark had loads of music links before the music tab was even created. There is no reason to believe music links will suddenly dry up now. i don't think you have anything to worry about.

You sound like those guys that go into baseball threads and post how baseball sucks.

Errrr, no. I'm rather the opposite of that, which is exactly one of the reasons I disliked much of the music tab. Because over half the threads were exactly that,

To actually add value to the site give me a way to not just ignore the worst of the perma-trolls but also to suppress the replies where people futilely try to engage in debate with these noise machines.

With all due respect, your logic does not connect.

IF fark will still have plenty of music links then why dump the music tab?

shoegaze99: which is exactly one of the reasons I disliked much of the music tab. Because over half the threads were exactly that,

IF the music tab was dumped because the threads were crap then how can you say the intention of removing the tab was not to limit them?

I'm not going to comment too much more about this because I feel myself sounding like a broken record (pun intended) so let me summarize:

The implementation of specialized tabs was done so that people with specific interested could more easily find thing of interest to them (which is why main page links can also be on a specialized page, right?)

Removal of one of those tabs can only make it harder to find those links, will probably result in fewer of them and less activity to them, and will make them WORSE, not better.

I respect the rights of the farkmasters to do what they want, and if the statement is "we don't like the music tab, we find it boring and want it gone" I am cool with that. But to say that it will be the same, and that nobody will care, is bullshiat. It will not be the same and plenty of farkers will care.

2011-06-01 07:58:30 PM
I like the new design ok. And I appreciate Drew trying to improve his site.

But my primary interests were/are the politics and music tab. So, you've taken half the fun away from me. It's bad enough that I set land-speed records getting my submissions redlighted. The only thing left is politics and there is no way in hell whatever went down with the music tab is worse than the politics tab.

Sure, I don't get TF anymore. But the ads on the site - that I presume someone is getting paid for - are targeted for people like me. Can't we ask that you continue to provide the service many of us enjoyed?

Presumably because it was redundant. Most of the tab was perfectly appropriate for showbiz and was often crossposted there, anyway. Half the others were posted to videos.

IF the music tab was dumped because the threads were crap then how can you say the intention of removing the tab was not to limit them?

Outside of speculating, I never once said why the tab was removed. I have no farking idea why they made that decision. I can only guess why they did and say why I don't give a fark that it was removed, which is what I've done.

It will not be the same and plenty of farkers will care.

Yeah, but the whiny Farkers don't really matter.

*blink* I have no problem with the Vista hate. Read my other comment for why I have it on the laptop (school's VPN sucks, I'm not going to pay for another O/S).

I do take issue with the Google Chrome hate. I was very disappointed with the first few versions. After all, if the browser can't gracefully handle PDFs it's a bit sad, but I'm happier with the later versions. It's somewhere between the currently bloated and slow Firefox, and the stripped down-to-nothing fast Opera.

/Plus, who can resist "He's Dead Jim" for a bad tab
//I know, not really worth anything
