I was about to say please don't let one of my crunchy hippie sometimes vegan anti-vax and is currently pregnant and has the flu with a nasty fever see this, but then, maybe she'll make the connection.

Her kid will be fine, although she is in her 30's. I'd be more worried about Down's than autism.

I say this story is absolutely false. I think it depends on genetics and family history of mental illness. I have Autism Spectrum Disorder but only a mild case. The chances of my unborn child getting Autism is pretty slim.

Yes, they could, but it's uncommon enough that I've never heard of a case. They could tell because autism is diagnosed using behavioral criteria, and Down Syndrome is genetic - it can be confirmed with a lab test.

It's far more common for autistic children to be co-diagnosed with mental retardation. Because of the difficultly in IQ testing autistic children, the numbers for this co-diagnosis vary considerably (between 25 and 70 percent) but it is generally accepted that about 50% of autistic children could also be appropriately diagnosed as mentally retarded.

My eldest has autism. The first doctor we went to told me that it was probably my fault he had autism because I had smoked cigarettes before I found out I was pregnant. I was relatively healthy during my pregnancy, I never had a flu or a fever(that I can remember). Back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's they blamed the mother, too. They called them "Refrigerator Mothers. Those statements conflict.

You state you think it depends on genetics and family history of mental illness.

If you truly believe that, than your child has a greater than average chance of inheriting autism from you, if you do indeed rate on the ASD scale.

Sorry, but it needed said. Autism isn't limited to white, middle class kids. It isn't limited to Western countries. My neighbor's sister works for the Joy Centre's school program for autistic children in Addis Ababa. My neighbor says that just about everyone who picks up the center's pamphlets that she has on the counter of her store is surprised that there are autistic kids in Ethiopia. So perhaps a better question would be "why are non-white, non-middle class children with autism so unbelievable"?

Unless we can rewire the brain, I doubt there will be a cure. Treatments and therapies sure, but a cure? I have my doubts.

Now the causes, there will be some good finds hopefully and eventually. The difficulty is people jumping on preliminary, unconfirmed research for the very blame you mention above.

40s (or was it 50s) + certainly has an impact on autism rates but 30-40 births haven't been known to effect Autism rates to my knowledge. Besides, I doubt the kids born to most under twenty have significantly above average intelligence in any way either.

It's amazing the conditions that have always been with us, yet in earlier eras have been labeled something else, managed by the individuals in a different way and managed by society in a different way. Sometimes worse than now, but I would argue sometimes better. (No proof, just a hunch. Some things can be overthought.)
