Seriously. Placing meat over an open flame is the oldest, simplest form of cooking.

We are so far removed from actually catching, killing, and cooking our food that I can see how a hotline would be necessary for many suburban people.

It doesn't make calling the hotline any better, though. Even if you don't know what you're doing, there's no reason to let on. Just keep persevering and grill that motherfarker until it's a crispy char. Then call out anyone who complains about it as a pusillanimous, pussy-whipped, suburban wimp.

I had an ex who couldnt cook even from a cookbook, yet somehow made tones of dishes and whined when i wouldnt do them. I guess she wanted me to babysit her like her father did. which probably has something to do with why shes now dating someone old enough to be her father.

the only redeeming point on her 'woman card' was that she spent a lot of money and expected me to pay for it.

I haven't but it is on the list of things to try. Mamarita bought me this and it has all kinds of great recipes and tips.

3StratMan: My cooking arsenal.

Niiiiice! I have the Weber, a gas grill (meh) water smoker and just recently was given a small trailer grill/smoker that can hold about 10 steaks or 3 medium briskets. It needs some rehab but it was free!

Been cooking over a Weber (my second)since 1988.

I LOVE my Weber and refuse to use anything else (even though I was given a gas grill as a gift--never used it).

Yes, if you need to call a hotline, hang it up and have the wife cook on a Hibatchi for you.

I've even used it for Thanksgiving Smoked Turkey. Frigging AWESOME.

The only reason you'd use a gas grill over a charcoal one is that you have it in an apartment balcony and your neighbors don't appreciate the smoke.

/charcoal ftw

Use my Weber all the time in all weather and it's never let me down. I have a Coleman tailgater (read: nice gesture by my wife), but that's more like a stove for camping (seriously- don't use it to cook meat, it's a big challenge and that's what a campfire is for). I have a mini Weber too for picnics.

you really have to give the advertiser credit for that set. either they got lucky and found one like that or someone went to a lot of trouble to create it. the amount of detail for an ad that would be seen on TV is pretty impressive. the nesting dolls are a nice touch.
/off topic

i went nuts a few years back and spent $600 on a 4 burner gas grill with side burner and rotisserie. while you can do great cooking with charcoal this works much better for me. actually enjoy grilling now.

For someone that doesn't sit there following a recipe, I sure have a ton of cookbooks. At least a hundred. They are a good source of inspiration. This (new window) one is hilarious.

rockradio1: I LOVE my Weber...I've even used it for Thanksgiving Smoked Turkey.

Did you use any particular wood for flavor? I've been trying a lot of different types for different meats. I like hickory on the yardbird, fruit woods for the swine mesquite for beef* and pecan comes across well on everything.

*I don't use raw mesquite. I cook it down to coals before using it and have found that I get the flavor without overpowering the meat which mesquite can do.

Curious: actually enjoy grilling now.

The convenience can be worth it. Especially in the winter. I don't miss it, but I'll probably have another one someday. Focus on great food; there's no room for grill snobbery in my book.

Indeed! Have fun. Even if you fark something up you've learned and had a few beers with friends doing it.

I've had some hit and misses with the water smoker. I have figured out that it's not worth a damn on a windy day. Can't keep the heat up on it.

My favorite Weber story (I have many - believe it or not they had very good ceramic engineers that really helped the space program) was my father hiring an engineer from the UK. The guy ordered a Weber grill to be delivered to him in the UK so he could toss an "American Style" going away party. When he did move to the US he was highly amused to find out that his apartment overlooked the Weber factory at the time. He stopped in one time to tell the story and they gave him a full tour of the facility.

It is a hot day with no wind type of thing. I enjoyed mine when I had it, but my next one will probably be the box style or drum style with the side wood box. I have making my own bacon on the to-do list.

I use gas all the time. It has its place. It's quicker than charcoal. It's the same as cooking on a stove top only you use less dishes. When i come home from work i can have dinner ready in 15 minutes and i dont have a huge mess to clean up. If I'm making barbecue I'll bust out the smoker.

2011-05-28 11:07:19 AM
Damn you all. My gas grill is on its last legs. I was planning on switching to charcoal next season (the plan was to pick up a charcoal grill at one of the end of season sales this year). Now it looks like I'm going to have to pay full price. Oh well.

I'm ashamed and embarrassed for "barbecuing" on a gas "grill" for so long. It has caused my testicles to shrivel like raisins, and the only words to come out of my mouth are "yes dear".

2011-05-28 11:10:19 AM
I love the taste of charcoal, but the time and energy that it takes to charcoal grill something is just a PITA. With a gas grill I turn it on, it preheats, I grill.

If I was a bachelor I would go would with charcoal. You can impress the ladies with a nice charcoal grilled salmon, steak, or chicken.

But as a husband, father and primary bread winner, I have about 1 hour that I can devote to cooking when I cook (during the week.) I want that to be quick and easy.
