Of all the characters in LOTR not mentioned in The Hobbit, Legolas is probably the only one that should appear.

The only other possible character would be Arwen and I'm not quite sure how they could work her in.

I don't care. I just wish Brian Blessed would be confirmed as the voice of Smaug, since he's not going to have his rightful place as Thorin Oakenshield.

Jackson has earned the benefit of the doubt for his Middle Earth films. Still, some of these extra characters strike me as unnecessary.

They don't need to do much of anything to make it work. She lives in Rivendell. Bilbo and company spent a lot of time in Rivendell. The company is having a feast with Elrond or something, she's at the table, or some other minor cameo.

With the other characters, keep in mind that Jackson is allegedly doing the White Council/assault on Dol Goldur, too. That will be woven into the story as a sideplot, presumably to show what Gandalf is up to during his time away from the company.

Thranduil is her father not Elrond. Dumbass.

I've only read LotR, never the Hobbit... but if Bilbo (or someone) visits Rivendell, seeing immortal elf characters there really wouldn't bother me.

If anything, I'd want to see more of that elf that dies during the "To the keep!" scene. Perhaps I missed something, but I never understood why that particular one was worthy of a slow-mo death.

Even as a kid I always thought that the Hobbit was a painful read. Not hard or anything but it is a book written for children.

Heh. I always get a kick out of seeing people throw the "dumbass" out there when they're totally, completely, 100 percent wrong.

Elrond is Arwen's father. (Source 1 of thousands.) Legolas is the son of Thranduil. (Source) It's relatively basic Tolkien knowledge.

I don't expect you'll be returning to the thread -- people like you never do -- but when you do I fully expect you to describe the taste of foot.

From (Source):

Legolas Thranduilion is a gay woodland elf who likes cock in his soft elvin vagina. He has a keen ability to finish a man off in about 5 minutes. He is estimated to have between 500 and 3,000 years of experience in the gay arts.

I assume you are talking about Haldir, who wasn't even at Helm's Deep in the books, and is barely mentioned in the Fellowship book. Elves weren't in that battle. But I don't really mind it, since the guy who played him was total eye-candy.

Thank god, I thought I was going to be the only geek who knew that his character is the son of the king of the wood elves who captured all the dwarves for trespassing in their woods. He's not technically in the prose but it would be no stretch at all for the king's son to appear in a story where the king is a pivotal character.

I've got no problem writing Legolas in, since as others as have noted, he's a prince of Mirkwood. I hope that they make it clear that Elves and Dwarves don't like each other. In LOTR the great friendship between Legolas and Gimli is presented as anomolous. Even if they make the Rivendell elves nice to the Dwarves (and sure, thrown in some Arwen), they had better make the Mirkwood elves hostile. That said, I suspect Peter Jackson knows this and will do the right thing.

This is the reason why I would quantum leap into Orlando Bloom.

Unrelated note, remember that scene in Return when Legolas takes down an Oliphant and crew, sliding down the beasts trunk and posing for his heroic close-up? I remember thinking "This is why Dwarves hate Elves".

That and the bit in Fellowship when they're all up to their asses in snow and Legolas is walking over the top of it? I'd cock-punch him on his way past. Smarmy coont.

"Shall I describe it to you, or would you like me to find you a box?"
"Shall I bite your nads off, lad, or shall I shove my axe so far up you arse you could cut a tree down with a head butt?"
