Fark's redesign will be live next week, but we wanted to give you (you meaning ONLY LOGGED IN USERS) a sneak preview so that you could check it out. We've been wanting to make it a bit more readable and a little more up-to-date, and so starting on June 1, it's going to look like this. We know it's going to feel different at first, but we'd like you to try it out to get used to it for a few days before we push it live. We also want to have a little bit of time for people to let us know if it's breaking anything. We've been making tweaks on it over the last couple weeks, some functional, some adjustments as recommended by the TotalFarkers (who got to see this 2 weeks ago). For example, we reduced the amount of whitespace in the threads (and a tiny bit on the main page), we switched to a different primary font to solve some IE problems, we added back the border around the comments posting box, we added a little bit of color to the tab names to make them stand out more and look more like links, we made sure the visited link colors worked so you can tell when you've clicked on a thread, and we made a bunch of other minor tweaks based on feedback that you might or might not notice.

There are a few scattered small issues still:

- The Learn More page is still "Under Construction"
- The FArQ pages and scattered other "static" pages will still show the old design until June 1
- If you have JavaScript disabled, you might notice a few layout problems
- The URL for the entertainment tab is still www.fark.com/showbiz and will be until June 1 (when it will switch to www.fark.com/entertainment)

Some other notes:
- "Real News. Real Funny" is just a placeholder right now for our new slogan (one that doesn't make people think we "make up fake news"). We've gotten some great suggestions from TotalFarkers and will be choosing one before June 1.
- The Music tab itself will be going away, but the content will not. Music news will be combined with Showbiz into the Entertainment tab, and Music videos will be posted to the Video tab.
- The All tab is also going away, but you can access the same content through the "All Latest" link on the right-side.

If the redesign doesn't look right to you (you see an error or something you think might be an error), you can send redesign-related feedback via Farkback.

Overall, I dig it. The comment spacing needs to be set back to where it was though. Far too cramped.

John Paul Jones: Overall, I dig it. The comment spacing needs to be set back to where it was though. Far too cramped.

Just goes to show, we can't please everyone :-).

We showed it off in beta, people said the font was too small. We made the font bigger, and then we had people telling us it was too big.

We had complaints that there was WAY too much whitespace, so we tried to fix that, and then other people think it's too cramped.

WE TRY TO MAKE YOU HAPPY, PEOPLE. Honest. It's just hard sometimes!

2011-05-26 09:07:59 PM

2011-05-26 09:08:42 PM
I like it. I would ask why leave the big space to the left, however. Don't mind it since I can read the whole comments.

2011-05-26 09:08:42 PM
My biggest complaint is still that the font size is too big and there's too much white space. But then again, pretty much every site redesign in the past few years has dropped the amount of content visible on a single screen in favor of larger font and more separation between content. And I've always gotten used to it.

Just did a check, on the Commented tab I get three more headlines on my monitor on the old format than the new format. I think it would be a good idea to cut the gray space on the left by a few picas so that everything can be a tad wider; the link to number of comments is too close to the actual headline when there's a notification of new comments.

Other than that, looks great.

SilentStrider: umm, your launch seems to have taken effect now.

Only if you clicked the link. You can still go back to 'old Fark' for now. On June 1, you won't have that option any more.

2011-05-26 09:09:11 PM
This is kind of a first for me with regard to site redesigns, but I like this. The changes make it look a little nicer and it seems easier to read. The nice thing is that the changes aren't so massive that I feel like I'm looking at a different website.

Overall good jorb guys.

My only complaint about the design is the default font setting is too huge. A little adjustment takes care of that, though.

Not only will I not get over it, I'll create a rival site and lead a mass exodus to it.

At least it works this time -- the last major redesign blew chunks so bad I stayed away for a few weeks until the site was usable again.

Much better. The rainbow colored tabs of the last design were a little too fabulous for me. This is much cleaner. My only complaint is that there seems to be a little too much white space in the comment page headers.

2011-05-26 09:10:54 PM
Looks pretty good, but the gray bar at the top could use some sprucing up. I understand why the text would be aligned towards the bottom for links you aren't currently at, but it looks bland.

Hmm. Since I'm not paying for this, I can't complain. But then again, I don't see why people get their panties in a wad over simplistic site designs. (At least the main page isn't full of flash, and you don't have to flip through links on a damn slideshow.)

2011-05-26 09:15:33 PM
I must say I dislike the dotty world background and the "Also on Fark" at the bottom.

They are just doing some social conditioning so there isn't a mass of whiny babies come June 1st saying how the "redesign sucks", "Drew sold out to advertisers", "they are never coming to fark again"... blah blah blah.... This is just to take a little wind out of their sails by letting them see the redesign and by June 1st, they're over it and hopefully don't whine and scare advertisers.

What's with the wasted vertical space at the top of the page? A whole line for "Real news, real funny?" Giant-sized Main/Geek/Business tabs which, despite their size, need giant-sized margins? Then another giant-sized date on it's own line which, since it's not clickable really doesn't need to be big. If a user is having trouble reading, maybe they could just figure out how to tell their browser to embiggen everything instead of inflicting it on everyone?

And more margin on the left... why?

The fonts look smooth on my Mac, but really jagged on Win/Firefox

Laptops dude. They have small screens that their users must put up with, in much the same way that Mrs. Jvl must put up with small equipment.

I like the new font and the new comment spacing. I dislike the right side light blue font on medium gray background or the top gray on other gray theme. It's less jarring than our current rainbow of tabs, but pretty != usable.

I sent a complaint via feedback last week, but my shiatty work hasn't upgraded beyond Internet Explorer 6, and it's beyond job description to make that change happen, but based on what I saw, the new Fark doesn't display properly in IE 6. Agree about gray bar and the topics section, bland and have a lot of space around them. I have a 1280/800 monitor and i'm pretty much halfway down before getting to the first link. Seems to be more whitespace between the links than the previous version.

It seems less polished and more passive. That and the small text on the upper banner seems fuzzy. The size of the buttons for the various tabs kinda sucks too. It puts the emphasis on the Entertainment tab instead of keeping them more equal like before.

It obviously won't stop me from using Fark, but the general overtones it's giving me are similar to depressants mixed with other depressants. I've gotten other people to like fark because it's a bit of a happy place full of jokes and zingers. This just says "Meh, I like cloudy days." What, did your wife leave you so you'd go goth but you're too old? Pep the Fark up.

I didn't actually see more ads, at least not in length, I compared the old and new, it looks like the ads along the side of the old are actually a little longer down the comments. The "Images/Banners" section seems gone, so this time it wasn't to increase ads. Perhaps they're trying to make it look more respectable and business-like and attract more varied ads.

Yep - actually fewer ads... we went down from 4 ads to 3 and got rid of the classifieds (a month ago, but in preparation for this).

Here's what I don't understand, just like the new phones we got at the office today. The old ones worked fine. They did everything they were supposed to do . Make calls, transfer calls, retrieve messages, forward calls, leave messages, caller ID, etc. They worked just fine yesterday. Today, all the old phones were in a forlorn pile and new phones were on our desks. The new phones don't do anything new and exciting, as if there was anything exciting a new phone could do. Everybody has a new phone number that no one knows yet, voicemail keys and passwords are different, outgoing messages need to be rerecorded, the clock/date graphic is smaller, etc. Why? Why? Why?. Everything worked just fine like ti did. Change for the sake of change seems nonproductive to me. The only advantage to getting the new phones is now I get a .wav file of voicemails in my email. While on the outset this seems to me to be just another email to delete, the .wav files will prove to provide hours of amusement with a little audacity editing.

Excellent redesign, my eyes thank the individuals involved in such a task.

Not only is it easy on the eyes, I can see it FAR more clearly on my television when I want to use that as my monitor. Previously, Fark would only be visible on my monitor, now its good on any monitor/TV.

Thanks for making Fark even more enjoyable, especially when we don't want to get off the couch/bed :)

meg: John Paul Jones: Overall, I dig it.

I still love you Meg, it's okay. But keeping it the way it was is BETTER, DAMMIT.

2011-05-26 09:35:48 PM
Holy crap, you basically fixed everything I asked you too. It does look better than the first showing. It could honestly use less space after the last line of a comment, but if people are saying cramped now, they'll say it more then. It definitely feels less squeezed than the last run, and the font is better.

Still confused why highlighting text turns it purple.

So you get a thanks for listening, and I'll probably get over it. Still like the old better, and the old version before that, but this isn't bad.

4 When The Book of Fark transferred from the Old Testicles to the New Testicles,
5 Drew's followers were much enraged by Drew's changes.
6 There was much crying in the streets and gnashing of teeth, and to Drew did the people cry "Why have you besmirched us!"
7 And Lo, did Drew hear the plight of his people, and he gathered his loyal servants before him, declaring
8 "See to it that they are appeased, or at the least silenced, for I am enjoying Thine Holy Heineken, and wish not to be disturbed."
9 Therefore did Jeff exit from the most majestic of quarters, and to the people he raised his hand.

This is quite a bit better than the beta version of the last redesign. (Not for nothing, but the modmin response to us users -- yes, even cheapskate liters like me -- is much better as well. Yay, people skills! Kudos, meg.)

I come to Fark for content and comments, and as long as readability and navigation is not compromised, I couldn't care less about its aesthetic appeal. Taking that into consideration, I think that this new design succeeds. I also tend to tile my Fark window with a second one so I can watch Hulu, TDS, Conan, etc. while I'm browsing this site. I dig how the content container autoadjusts to wrap the text so I don't have to scroll left or right.

In short, I can get used to this change a lot quicker than the last one. Are there any plans to change the mobile version to match?

I like the lack of avatars and sigs. While they can be fun, the lack of them prevents idiots and assholes from being really farking annoying with them, which gives more weight to the comments themselves. Faster to load, easier to read, focus on the conversation itself. It's fark. It would lose something if it tried to be a more normal board.

As for my thoughts on the redesign, tabs need to come back. I don't care if they're colored or not, but they need to be tabs instead of just random links floating out in space. Keeps things cohesive.

And I'm undecided on the spacing, but I'll probably get used to it. All I can really say is that it's different, and change is uncomfortable. I was certainly never bothered by the extra space in the previous design.

meg: EchoMike: This is quite a bit better than the beta version of the last redesign. (Not for nothing, but the modmin response to us users -- yes, even cheapskate liters like me -- is much better as well. Yay, people skills! Kudos, meg.)

Kudos (and blame) all go to JoeThePeacock/pattonx who designed it. But especially kudos.

Well, that too, but I was also talking about you. Good customer service goes a long way. (Not trying to suck up to the mods and admins. I'm just letting you know it's appreciated.) Cheers!

Awesome. Now if the new mobile site would just let me see tags other than just "video", I would be a happy camper.

2011-05-26 10:11:55 PM

sparty: A third of the page (the entire right side) is devoted to ads? Weak.

Much better than the ".mobi" upgrade, however. That was (is) horrific...

Really? I find the new mobile version a lot more usable on my phones than the old one was. It's much more finger friendly.

2011-05-26 10:12:03 PM
Fark needs to follow twitter's lead and make their login page a ripoff of the main page for facebook. that would be classy.

Hopefully, people will be smart enough to post music performances in the 'video' tab instead of entertainment, where they'll get lost in the shuffle (and be out of place anyhow).

I don't like the combined showbiz and music business. I don't want to wade through a bunch of reality TV BS to get to the music news. TV is dumb. I wont leave or anything, but I will be mildly irritated for a while until I get over it. BE WARNED!

I appreciate the bigger ad space on the right.

2011-05-26 10:15:47 PM
I'm not mad about the right column's typography. The leading could be adjusted and there could be a lot fewer font sizes used; having five different font sizes in such close proximity is messy.

You could do something like getting rid of the text in the Like Fark, Twitter and RSS as I think that most people know what those icons mean. In fact just presenting those as buttons with no text would probably solve the problem.

/Can I come on your tits now?

I say screw the IE users - the old font looked better. Tell 'em to download a real web browser like Firefox.

The new background image is nice. I do agree that the new design is less colorful, though... as if you wanted to make the site a bit less attractive.

For whatever reason, this new font hurts my eyes. It's taller, but less wide. I feel like I need to sit further away, then squint.

But I'm the kind of person who resets everything to the smallest, cleanest design possible. If there was a way to make font and size user controllable?

Oh, and as for the music tab people... You'll get over it.

So far so good--been running it since I got the Mac back and was notified that I could make the switch to try the Beta. Looks similar to the Mobile interface, which isn't terribly surprising. Easy enough to find everything--a little annoying on the profile with the additional clicks, but there is less scrolling, and an easy on the eyes size.

I'll get over it. So long as I get to keep idiots on Ignore, I'm good.

2011-05-26 10:58:50 PM
I know it's down the track after this goes live, but will the excellence of the new Mobile site also change?

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: the_second_inmate: I miss the tab colors.

Indeed. This redesign is incredibly boring and cramped. The new logo blends into the dark grey background and looks hazy. The white/light grey (Main, Sports, Geeks, etc.) fades into the dark grey as well, and is especially boring. Nothing looks eye-catching or appealing. All the usernames, comments, and spacings look cramped, while the font is large and awkward.

And that new slogan is beyond terrible:

It's not news, it's... Fark!
Real news. Real funny. Find out more.

Bipolar Fark loves you!
Bipolar Fark hates you! Find out more.

Pick one and stick with it.

Just discovered something. If you squeeze in your browser window from the right to eliminate the ads, and just have the headlines/comments, it makes for a much leaner thing to have open on your monitor at work ...

As I have two 24" monitors with a fair bit of "not work" stuff open, this is a handy thing.

Constructive criticism: The "Main Sports Geek Business... etc" banner visually seems to have too much vertical space. Scrunch that in a little more, or make the "you are here" demarkation bump alot taller.

Also, the new font color (light grey) in the comment box is a little too light for my tastes. Whats wrong with black? Contrasts in text input areas are a good thing.

I definitely would NOT get over it. Just look at those wide margins. This redesign is way below my standards.

Seriously, though, what was wrong with the old font? I'm ambivalent about the new typeface, but the increase in size seems like it creates more problems (less information, necessitates more whitespace, which means even less information) than it solves (um, what does it solve again?). The expanded margins exacerbate the issue.

I'll bet it all looks great on a giant, eleventy-gigapixel monitor. But for cheapskates like me with our ancient 1280x1024 screens (or people with small laptops), it's kinda like reading everything through a magnifying glass.

What I don't like about the new Fark isn't really design-based, but that scrolling through the pages is so slow. I tried reading through a thread using the new set-up, and it was lagging so bad, I thought something was initially wrong with the trackpad on my laptop.

I hope that gets fixed.

Still mixing left align and center align in that right column, I see. That's a pretty simple mistake to fix, so I'm guessing someone actually thinks it looks better as mixed alignment (they'd be wrong). The footer does it too, so at least there's consistency in the mistake.

I also think multiple navigations in the same area are a poor choice, but I understand not wanting to be too extreme in your changes. Overall I like the new design, but there's still a few basic design issues and usability issues.

I'm not wild about the new font...seems a little cramped on the eyes, somehow. In all fairness, though, I still sorta miss the design we were using just prior to the infamous "you'll get over it" debacle. (I got over it, obviously, but my preference remains.)

My only major issue is to echo that of others: where's the farking "Continue Farking" button? Hell, some of us actually use it...plus, it's practically a trademark. Put it back where it belongs, please.

I just want to say THANK YOU for this, as it was may only big complaint. I really do appreciate it. Of course, with appreciation comes a bit of critique: while I do appreciate there now being a visited state, it could stand to have a little bit of color to it to make it stand out a little more. IMHO.

Also, I would appreciate if the side-bar links also had a visited state to make commonly used ones easier to pick out at a glance.

Otherwise, I've been using it without any complaints and overall I don't mind the new design at all. Good work. :)

I'll blame it on my OS/browser and hope this isn't how it looked when they thought it was a good idea. I'll get over it and/or fiddle with it to fix it and/or change browsers and/or get a life. Aw, who am I kidding? I'll get over it.

Are you at least going to make all comments have the CSS attribute overflow:scroll? Because I hate when comments spill outside of the background-color area.

I don't like the change. The new design has far too much wasted space. It looks too "trendy" and not enough "worky". How am I supposed to surf at work if it looks like this?

Speaking of. Mister Web designer, any chance of getting the music tab back? Thanks to kind Farkers, my musical menu has more than doubled over the past couple years thanks to that tab and the "If you like that, try this" posts.

Looking forward to complaining about this once it goes live. Thanks Fark!

Date at top of page is of no use and takes up too much vertical space. On my laptop it means I can only see three headlines.

Needs some color. Maybe not skittles, but something.

Logo needs to be re-imagined from scratch. It was never any good.

Font in threads is very readable for me. Folks that are whining about it being too big need to learn about ctrl - (or I need to learn about ctrl +).

Other than that, looks fine.

Cottage Cheesecake: It looks good enough from this end...but there are a ton more scripts running. Almost double. I am sure they are all there to help keep the look clean and simple though. Right?

Which extra ones are you seeing? We have the same analytics scripts running (so that we can get ads to keep this site afloat), one less ad script running (3 ads instead of 4), and the same fark scripts (to handle the quote button, html tools, url hover, etc). I think we added one more tiny script to handle the login at the top, and a small 'modernizr' script, but that's it. There shouldn't be any others. If you see double than that, let me know what the other ones are so I can investigate.

There've been a couple comments in here about it running 'slower', so I'm looking into that. For those of you who've reported that, let me know if it keeps running slower. My guess is that since we're using new images, css files, etc., your browsers are just downloading and caching a bunch more things at once. Once you use it a couple times, it should be as speedy (or speedier)

It's not as "quirky" as the old one, which I kinda liked. It almost looks like a halfway-respectable website.

The whole top of the page is wasted. An entire bar for the logo wasted. On the article page, below that you have the headline with facebook crap and whatever. WAY too much empty space there. Condense that shiat down.

Yep. The Fark logo sucks ass. So does the new tagline. "Real News. Real Funny"? C'mon. That's terrible.

I don't understand why websites always have to keep changing things. You just start to get used to a
thing, learn all the ins and outs, and they go and change it on you leaving you right back at square one
again. What is wrong with keeping things the same all the time? What's the fascination with always
changing and evolving? Whatever happened to the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? I just want some
stability in my life. Nothing is compatible with my Windows 2000 anymore. It works fine except nothing
supports it. It's everyone's damn fascination with change!

I dunno about following "It's not news, it's FARK" with "Real News. Real Funny." The branding should probably make sense...

I'm also not a fan of the font change, but still have my eyesight, so that's probably why.

Other than that, I like the redesign better than the current version, which is a first for me.

Caeldan: BRING BACK THE SKITTLES TABS

What he said! Or at least some color back in the section headers. The colors are good visual navigation clues, plus everything else is so ... gray.

I was thinking of coming up with one and posting it. The trick is to keep the brand recognition while taking it to the next level. If I get a chance, I may do one tonight.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet... but why not include a button that allows you to adjust the font size to your liking? (Yes, I know Firefox and probably other browsers allow you to do this anyway.)

Looks good - though an option to use Helvetica, instead of Arial, would be very nice indeed.

Works okay while drunk.

FWIW, I usually view FARK on a T43 Thinkpad on XP Pro. Using latest FireFox. There's some mush to the right of the screen, but it doesn't take away from Fark content. FF's adblock works.

I tried it with IE 8 bone stock at work on similar computers. Ads slowed it down compared to FF that I have installed on those machines.

I don't have any problems with the new FARK.
