Fark's redesign will be live next week, but we wanted to give you (you meaning ONLY LOGGED IN USERS) a sneak preview so that you could check it out. We've been wanting to make it a bit more readable and a little more up-to-date, and so starting on June 1, it's going to look like this. We know it's going to feel different at first, but we'd like you to try it out to get used to it for a few days before we push it live. We also want to have a little bit of time for people to let us know if it's breaking anything. We've been making tweaks on it over the last couple weeks, some functional, some adjustments as recommended by the TotalFarkers (who got to see this 2 weeks ago). For example, we reduced the amount of whitespace in the threads (and a tiny bit on the main page), we switched to a different primary font to solve some IE problems, we added back the border around the comments posting box, we added a little bit of color to the tab names to make them stand out more and look more like links, we made sure the visited link colors worked so you can tell when you've clicked on a thread, and we made a bunch of other minor tweaks based on feedback that you might or might not notice.

There are a few scattered small issues still:

- The Learn More page is still "Under Construction"
- The FArQ pages and scattered other "static" pages will still show the old design until June 1
- If you have JavaScript disabled, you might notice a few layout problems
- The URL for the entertainment tab is still www.fark.com/showbiz and will be until June 1 (when it will switch to www.fark.com/entertainment)

Some other notes:
- "Real News. Real Funny" is just a placeholder right now for our new slogan (one that doesn't make people think we "make up fake news"). We've gotten some great suggestions from TotalFarkers and will be choosing one before June 1.
- The Music tab itself will be going away, but the content will not. Music news will be combined with Showbiz into the Entertainment tab, and Music videos will be posted to the Video tab.
- The All tab is also going away, but you can access the same content through the "All Latest" link on the right-side.

If the redesign doesn't look right to you (you see an error or something you think might be an error), you can send redesign-related feedback via Farkback.

You people can't keep a secret at all, can you?

2011-05-26 09:04:14 PM
I'm sure we'll get over it.

2011-05-26 09:04:19 PM
My God, I might not get over it.

2011-05-26 09:04:24 PM
Overall, I dig it. The comment spacing needs to be set back to where it was though. Far too cramped.

2011-05-26 09:04:35 PM
Uh oh.

2011-05-26 09:05:31 PM
I'm already over it.

2011-05-26 09:06:09 PM
Now that Jeff guy. He could keep a secret!

2011-05-26 09:06:23 PM
umm, your launch seems to have taken effect now.

2011-05-26 09:06:38 PM
Will there be cake and cookies?

2011-05-26 09:06:47 PM
Meh.

2011-05-26 09:07:05 PM
Has anyone used the "you'll get over it" joke yet?

2011-05-26 09:07:38 PM
TFers money at work.

2011-05-26 09:07:56 PM
Oh good! More space for advertising.

/I'll get over it.

Just goes to show, we can't please everyone :-).

We showed it off in beta, people said the font was too small. We made the font bigger, and then we had people telling us it was too big.

We had complaints that there was WAY too much whitespace, so we tried to fix that, and then other people think it's too cramped.

WE TRY TO MAKE YOU HAPPY, PEOPLE. Honest. It's just hard sometimes!

2011-05-26 09:07:59 PM
Meh. I don't think I'll get over it, but who cares.

2011-05-26 09:08:00 PM
Clean. Better. Nice. The font is better, too.

2011-05-26 09:08:10 PM

SumoJeb: Meh.

2011-05-26 09:08:12 PM
You mean you're not going to surprise the basement-dwellers?!

/you'll get over it
//was over it before it was an it
///and they DID get over it, didn't they?

2011-05-26 09:08:35 PM
Me likey

2011-05-26 09:08:42 PM
I like it. I would ask why leave the big space to the left, however. Don't mind it since I can read the whole comments.

2011-05-26 09:08:42 PM
My biggest complaint is still that the font size is too big and there's too much white space. But then again, pretty much every site redesign in the past few years has dropped the amount of content visible on a single screen in favor of larger font and more separation between content. And I've always gotten used to it.

Just did a check, on the Commented tab I get three more headlines on my monitor on the old format than the new format. I think it would be a good idea to cut the gray space on the left by a few picas so that everything can be a tad wider; the link to number of comments is too close to the actual headline when there's a notification of new comments.

Other than that, looks great.

SilentStrider: umm, your launch seems to have taken effect now.

Only if you clicked the link. You can still go back to 'old Fark' for now. On June 1, you won't have that option any more.

2011-05-26 09:09:11 PM
This is kind of a first for me with regard to site redesigns, but I like this. The changes make it look a little nicer and it seems easier to read. The nice thing is that the changes aren't so massive that I feel like I'm looking at a different website.

Overall good jorb guys.

Be sure to add these at the bottom of the pages:

img.fark.net

If you haven't noticed that yet.

2011-05-26 09:09:23 PM
My only complaint about the design is the default font setting is too huge. A little adjustment takes care of that, though.

2011-05-26 09:09:35 PM
Not only will I not get over it, I'll create a rival site and lead a mass exodus to it.

2011-05-26 09:09:49 PM

all the good names are gone: I'm already over it.

Me too.

At least it works this time -- the last major redesign blew chunks so bad I stayed away for a few weeks until the site was usable again.

IIRC, that was the last time I got laid.

Fark.

Rereddit?

2011-05-26 09:10:02 PM
It's alright, but who came up with that tag line?

2011-05-26 09:10:04 PM
I am not seeing any more boobies. What is the advantage here?

2011-05-26 09:10:33 PM
Much better. The rainbow colored tabs of the last design were a little too fabulous for me. This is much cleaner. My only complaint is that there seems to be a little too much white space in the comment page headers.

2011-05-26 09:10:54 PM
Looks pretty good, but the gray bar at the top could use some sprucing up. I understand why the text would be aligned towards the bottom for links you aren't currently at, but it looks bland.

2011-05-26 09:11:13 PM
I hate to be that guy, but the cramped text is a little off-putting. Open it up a little more, if you would.

Whoa. Whoa there. Actual usefull and constructive input?

We can't be having any of that. What would it do to our reputation?

2011-05-26 09:11:41 PM
Needs more color and a better banner

2011-05-26 09:11:51 PM
" We've been wanting to make it a bit more readable..."

Are you shutting down?

/i kid

If you're lucky, you'll get lucky again this time...

2011-05-26 09:12:00 PM
I don't do change well

It needs to look more like Gawker.

/ducks

2011-05-26 09:12:41 PM
I like it. I like the comment spacing. Tighter is better.

I've gotten over it.

Now we need a Food tab

second.

2011-05-26 09:12:53 PM
Im over it. Its not nearly as ugly as the last redesign, and now people won't think I'm reading some fruity gay pride website. not that theres anything wrong with that.

2011-05-26 09:12:55 PM
Looks fine to me. Who am I to be critical, after all?
Heaven knows I'm no angel.
No one ever pays any attention when I complain about things anyway.

2011-05-26 09:13:13 PM
mmm goes down smooth

2011-05-26 09:13:23 PM
I ... I'm okay with this. Kind of too much whitespace at the top above the comments, but the rest is still pretty familiar while being more up-to-date.
