people that are originally from Massachusetts define themselves more by race and ethnicity than any other people in this country.

*my great great grandfather couldn't hack it in the decrepit little shiathole european country (and in fact was going to starve to death there probably) that hasn't given anything positive to this world in 1500 years but that won't stop me from screaming from the top of the lungs that I am enormously proud of my heritage and and an incredible amount of my identity is wrapped up in what I perceive to be my race!*

Well Phil Lynott's dead, so that rules out any other color.

Was there something about metro Boston neighborhoods or ethnic makeups of older churches that contributed to this? Just curious. Another thing I've kinda noticed is that Italian-Americans (or Italian-Canadians for that matter) like to tell you what part of Italy their family came from. I guess that shows that Italy's more of a political construct than a cultural one.

I understand your point, but I'm wondering if the choice is already made for them more often than not, wondering if they can't escape the hyphenation even if they tried.

But I'm a white guy so that's something I'll never really *know* first-hand. I'll happily stand corrected if I'm way off base about this.

its not so much that we define ourselves by race first, its that we have been defined by race first. not everyone was given a choice of being an american-american . at one point black-americans werent even counted as 100% human, let alone real citizens with equal rights and identities.

Put me down as another one who can't quite work out this weird thing Americans do with hyphens.
You are not Irish-American, the Irish don't know you or care about you. Sure, they pretended for a while there in order to get you to fund the IRA but now that you have decided you don't really like terrorism anymore (because someone used it on you, once oh boo hoo).
yeah, now you aren't throwing fund raising dinners for Gerry Adams they say pogue mahone. (but without caring to specify colour)

It started with African-American. It just got out of control from there.

Sincerely though, my dad is Irish-American. Born in Lisburn outside of Belfast, came to America and runs dual-citizenship now. Seeing as he was born in one place, lives in the other, and is a citizen of both, I give him the hyphen.
