2001-10-24 10:29:19 AM

2001-10-24 10:31:50 AM
Somewhere up there I'm sure E.T. has his middle finger extended solely in the air to let everyone know what he thinks about this travesty.
2001-10-24 10:32:35 AM
Taking the guns out of this movie is not going to make it any less scary for little kids. When I was 4, my parents took me to see this in the theater. They had to drag me out screaming at the end because I thought E.T. had died (I was otherwise a very quiet child). Now E.T. just freaks the hell outta me. No matter how P.C. they make it, E.T.'s still scary.

And has anyone been on the Universal Studios ride? Talk about needing chemical enhancement....
2001-10-24 10:32:56 AM
I just watched Dr Strangelove for the first time the other day! (yeah i'm lame) It was an awesome movie. I love the 10 fems to 1 guy ratio they figure out at the end of the movie Thats funny shiat.
2001-10-24 10:33:38 AM
Auggie: Isn't it the conservative right who wants to censor Hollywood? Too much sex, too much violence, it's eroding the moral values of our great nation, blah blah blah?

Oh, wait. This is different. You don't afree with the changes, so it must be the liberals' fault. Gotcha.
2001-10-24 10:35:13 AM
Hey, the Universal Studios ride rules! The way E.T. says your name at the end of it! Come on now! XP RULES!
2001-10-24 10:37:40 AM
I thought it was disgusting when ET was all pale and shriveled up in that river. i never watched it again after I saw that part.
2001-10-24 10:37:46 AM

The conservative right wants to take out sex and drugs, the liberal left wants to take out guns and violence.
2001-10-24 10:37:57 AM
At the very least, they could have options for edited and original versions of the film on DVD. Maybe even have the altered version as the default but have an original cut in the menu as well. They way they rerelease DVDs I'm sure that this will come out eventually. Any chance to sell two versions to the same person...
2001-10-24 10:38:10 AM
I blame aliens. They're using a mind controll beam on the moon to make us all whining morons.
2001-10-24 10:38:13 AM
Purely gay.
2001-10-24 10:38:15 AM
Actually, he kinda looked like a uncircumsized penis thats been in the bathtub too long....not like i know what one of those looks like.
2001-10-24 10:39:09 AM
I can't wait for the remake of Saving Private Ryan. Weapons of choice: Nerf Guns and Super Soakers.
2001-10-24 10:41:12 AM
Instead of guns, the people run around with a rubber band cocked between their thumb and index finger.
Every kid knows how dangerous a rubberband is !
It'll knock yer eye out !
2001-10-24 10:41:34 AM
You know, it's been a while since I watched E.T. but I'm pretty sure I remember the feds actually aiming the guns at one point, and that's gonna look pretty stupid if they've been replaced with walkie-talkies or something in those scenes as well.
"Freeze, motherfarker! Don't make me shoot my cellphone at you!"
Well, maybe they're those covert phone-guns the CIA uses, I dunno.

You're damn right it was an awesome movie; that scene with Slim Pickens riding an H-bomb is priceless.
2001-10-24 10:45:03 AM
too funny.... Philly, you are too easy.

bjorky, you got it.
2001-10-24 10:46:05 AM
I'm curious as to why this was done, and more importantly, at whose insistence? Was it the director, or the studio? If it was the studio geniuses, did it get cleared with Spielberg? If not, I've got a REAL problem with this. If Spielberg asked for the change and got it, I'm more disappointed than angry.

This isn't like the changes George Lucas made to Star Wars, redoing special effects with new technology. This appears to be, for all intent, an editorial change. What's it supposed to say? Is it an appeasement to law enforcement to make them appear less scary? Is it to "protect the children" and not frighten them with firearms? What? I just don't understand.
2001-10-24 10:46:51 AM
I want my "Star Wars" DVD where Han Solo shoots Greedo first.
2001-10-24 10:47:03 AM
Does the WTC show up anywhere during ET? If so, They better take it out. Otherwise people are likely to get upset when they see it.
2001-10-24 10:49:06 AM
The right wants the people to do it themselves.
The left wants the government to do it for them.
2001-10-24 10:51:15 AM
I see they're replacing the guns in the scene with walkie talkies, well, if the walkie talkies are over 10W RF then it might just fry the little alien...
2001-10-24 10:53:34 AM
How the hell does a stupid article about a film studio editting and old movie like E.T. to be more 'politically correct' turn into a friggin 'left wing/right wing' debate? Someone explain it to me.

E.T. was Jesus by the way...
2001-10-24 10:55:30 AM
ET sucks.
2001-10-24 10:55:46 AM

That's an oversimplification. That's like saying:
The right wants to act as a parent and keep you from sex, drugs, and messages in your rock and roll.
The left wants you to make your decisions for yourself.
2001-10-24 10:57:07 AM
This is outrageous! What a pompus bastard! Come on! The guns were ok 20 years ago, when the world was MORE UPTIGHT, but now they can show dead, bloody, bloated people on the 6:00 news, but cops can't have guns in movies. Unbelieveable!
All this from the schmuck that got Saving Private Ryan an R rating. ANY OTHER DIRECTOR would have gotten NC-17 all day long. I farking hate Hollywood.
2001-10-24 10:57:12 AM
Augie Ben Doggie: I am a liberal wahoo and even I think thats totally stupid!
2001-10-24 10:57:17 AM
ET really sucks. Drew Barrymore ain't even neekid.
2001-10-24 10:57:48 AM
Auggie: Too easy? How so? By showing that the right wants just as much censorship as the left?

Cry foul when censorship comes from the other side, but not when it comes from yours. Sounds hypocritical to me...

Good thing ET wasn't rollin' up some phatty boombalatty blunts, huh?
2001-10-24 10:58:19 AM
Stop, or I'll push-to-talk!
2001-10-24 10:59:57 AM
Prefferedcustomer: Why would anyone get upset at seeing the World Trade Center in an old movie!?
2001-10-24 11:00:55 AM
ET DVD goes PC ASAP, NRA wants C&D PDQ, GOP orders S&D on OMB, LA IQ AWOL
2001-10-24 11:02:03 AM
Chalkie thats a good question, why would anyone get upset at seeing the World Trade Center in an old movie? You should ask the hollywood studios that since they're removing it from pretty freakin much everything they can.
2001-10-24 11:02:55 AM
So if we remove all guns from movies, people won't think they exsist, and therefore America will turn into a pleasant Eloi-esque utopia, all because they removed the guns from E.T.

Left/Right wing debates begin over the most trivial things like this because both sides are ignorant enough to think that little things like guns in classic movies matter, and they turn it into a huge jihad.
2001-10-24 11:04:03 AM
More sex is the answer if you ask me.....
2001-10-24 11:09:06 AM
More sex. more drugs. more guns. more bombs.

I'm a GUY. I like boobies, explosions, fights, and other cool sheeyat like that. I'm not arguing with Auggie because I defend the removal of the guns from the movie. I'm trying to point out that crying about something that your "clique" does just as much at some other "clique" does is truly desrving of the [image from too old to be available] tag.
2001-10-24 11:12:40 AM
I'm somewhat of a film junkie and I've known about this for a while. But the icing on the cake was when I read this little ditty from DarkHorizons :

ET: The Extra-Terrestrial: Just when you thought this whole movie changing/editing thing was quietening down, it rears up again in the most ridiculous of ways. Creators reports that Dee Wallace Stone has been called in to change a line in the upcoming re-release of "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" due out on March 22nd. Stone says "There was some reference to one of the Halloween characters in the film looking like a terrorist, so we're going in to reloop that line". Sheesh. Nevertheless there's going to be big push for this re-release (with new footage) as Stone has been booked for several major publicity events (eg. "Oprah").

This kind of 'revisioning' disgusts me and it's making me rethink my opinions of Mr. Speilburg and Mr. Lucas.
2001-10-24 11:15:32 AM
Lucas lost me when he redid the Han/Greedo scene.
2001-10-24 11:27:50 AM
I'm sorry... lucas redid the han/greedo scene??? I don't remember. Ya this is pretty gay, I wish people wouldn't be such pussies. what the hell is the point of removing those guns???
2001-10-24 11:29:40 AM
The conservative right wants to take out sex and drugs, the liberal left wants to take out guns and violence.

Let's let them BOTH have their way. Then we can just go to the movies, have a black screen with some Enya music (if it is safe and both sides agree that it is OK and no one is offended and everyone it happy), and get nekkid and neck or something.
2001-10-24 11:34:00 AM
Know what? Our freedom was gone way before 9/11
2001-10-24 11:36:52 AM
G92vr4: In the original, Solo shot Greedo under the table; in the update, Solo shot Greedo over the table. Apparently Lucas thought that shooting Greedo under the table was too sneaky and "underhanded" (groan) an act for such a noble character as Han Solo.
2001-10-24 11:41:28 AM
Yeah the han gredo thing was retarded A blind epileptic monkey in a siesure could have fragged han at that distance.
2001-10-24 11:42:01 AM
G92vr4: In the original "Star Wars," Greedo confronts Han Solo in the cantina, telling him that he's going to collect the bounty Jabba put out on Solo. Han stalls while reaching under the table for his blaster. Right before Greedo is going to lead Solo away, Han shoots the green bounty hunter under the table. This makes Han a more interesting character, as he will eventually "reform" into a General in the Rebel Alliance.
In the re-done scene, Greedo shoots first, making Solo's shot "self-defense." Crap.
2001-10-24 11:42:18 AM
It's actually all about greed. In a year or two, the studio can re-release the "original, unedited" ET.

They do it all the time with DVDs. Release a movie, and a couple months later, release a "special edition" or "collector's edition".
2001-10-24 11:44:37 AM
When ET came out, my daughter was five years old. She wanted to see the picture, so I took her. During the scene where the three kids are arguing at the dinner table, one of them says "penis breath" to the other one, as a retort. My daughter turned to me and asked "What did he say, 'peanuts breath'?" I was so frickin' mad at why that would be allowed in a movie for small children, all I could say was "yeah". Now, Spielburg wants to get PC with police not carring guns? fark him.
2001-10-24 11:47:00 AM
The thing about the left wing and the right wing...

if you don't have both, you're flapping in a circle.

This revisionism is stupid. Removing WTC from old (and yet to be released) movies is dumb.

I wish I had my copy of '1984' here so that I could pluck a Big Brother mot juste from its pages.
2001-10-24 11:51:23 AM
[image from too old to be available]

Did they even HAVE cell phones when ET was released? Methinks not.
