I'm a Sagitarius. There, that is the extent of my knowledge of astrology.

paradoxflux:
still no cure for cancer?

I submit that cancer may very well have been cured if the average person really cared whether or not it was cured. But the average person watches Joe Millionaire and spends money on beer, instead of reading Cancer Research and donating money to the NIH.

With scientists on the right, and astrologers on the left, where does that leave the vast middle majority?

Scientologists.

Bah!

It would seem that once labeled "most intelligent thread" the thread took a nose dive.

There's too many different type of cancer to just make a single "cure for cancer." It simply won't happen, and the scientists doing the research know it. There will be a cure for breast cancer or a cure for pancreatic cancer or a cure for lung cancer.

But not just a cure for cancer.

project: get the newspaper, go to the horoscope section. Get a pair of scissors {be careful} and cut out the horoscope section. Now, cut all of the horoscopes out, removing the astrological signs from the predictions. Now, put all of the predictions in a cup or hat, shake them up, and then see if you can tell the difference between the predictions.

It should be required reading for all school children.

If that's your platform, I'll vote for you.

With sicere apologies to Sam Cooke:

"Don't know much about history,
Don't know much biology.
Don't know much about a science book,
Don't know much about the french I took.
But I know there's no invisible, incorporeal, floating dragon who spits heatless fire in your garage,
and I know if you understood that, too,
what a wonderful world this would be."

Arg. Blast rips through U.N headquarters in Bagdad? :-(

The flame war du jour approacheth. There was NOTHING in my horoscope about this.

I would just like to thank RobW, Purple_Jack, and kwejibo among others for helping me make this possible.

So, when submitting a scientific research article our headline should be more specific like, "Still no cure for testicular cancer"?

2003-08-19 10:08:31 AM
Now, put all of the predictions in a cup or hat, shake them up, and then see if you can tell the difference between the predictions.

And you would prove that... they're all predictions.

Whoa. :)

Now, take a chart of chemicals with identical chemical formulas. Put them in a cup without the common names. Shake them up. Now see if you can tell the difference between them.

They're all chemicals. With the same formula.

Your experiment proves nothing.

Bah.

Does anyone else have a problem where if FARK is the referer, this article doesn't show up?

If I click the link from fark, it doesn't work - I get the interface part of the website, but not the article itself. However, if I then cut and paste the link into a separate browser window, it comes up... odd.

Personally, I like lukelightning's idea of Jay_veeism.

Because it implies that if we kidnap jay_vee and stick him in a box, we can control our lives by moving him around.

Need cash? Ship jay_vee's crate to Azerbaijan.
Love life not too hot? Airlift the crate to Scoonthorpe.

Brilliant.

tarrby that was hilarious. If more people thought like you, the world would be a better place.

Unfortunately, people seem to be content believing myths in the face of a crushing lack of evidence. *sigh*

Cool, Fark filtered Britain's most dismal town.

Here's what some pro astrologers predicted for Sept 2001. If this is not proof that they spouting complete nonsense...

"Compared to August, the month of September is likely to be relatively a lot less stressful for most of the world, especially from natural and man-made accidents, terrorism, and violence standpoints. Also, after the first week of September, expect some relief to the volatile region of Israel and Palestine." - Prediction for September 2001 on astroinsight.com - a member of the professional astrology webring.

Yes, jay_vee, this thread has gone downhill. Not that that's a bad thing, I can actually read some posts without my head hurting

Crap! The really scary image didn't work. Trying again:

Sadly, astrology pretty much explains the last 2 years of the Reagan administration. No, really, I speak the truth.

2003-08-19 10:27:49 AM
You know what I've always wondered? In my newspaper, in the horoscopes section, it has a listing for each sign, and then a listing for if you were born on that day.

THEN, it says "if you would like your personal horoscope from a professional astrologer, call 1-800-something for $1.50 a minute."

Didn't I just READ my personal horoscope?

2003-08-19 10:27:59 AM
Unfortunately, people seem to be content believing myths in the face of a crushing lack of evidence.

Not really related to your comment, but just have to vent. And I guess this speaks to the people in the thread who want to say "Why does it matter if people believe in astrology?"

Two people here at work - one who works for me, and one who is in another department - always butt heads. ALWAYS. They can't get along longe enough to get their jobs done (the nature of the job REQUIRES them to interact). So, I keep getting dragged into it, naturally.

And the guy in the other department (who, incidentally, is a friend of mine), always says, "Well, what do you expect? We're both Aries! We can't get along."

I just want to scream "COP-OUT" and smack him in the head. But I've heard that assaulting employees is NOT, shockingly, the mark of a good manager.

2003-08-19 10:29:42 AM
Astrology was the precurser of astronomy, before people knew that the stars were actually suns, billions of lightyears away, from a solar system filled with very few planets. The signs are actually stargate symbles.... get a grip people.

2003-08-19 10:29:52 AM
TheDevGuy, don't take this the wrong way, but I think I hate you.

It's nothing personal, you just remind me of 90% of the people I went to high school with.

2003-08-19 10:30:48 AM
You know, I thought this thread was at its best with the semi-poetic boobies descriptions.

Kudos on the dumbing down guys. Seriously. Why have arguments about things very few people here have more than a class in high school or college's worth of knowledge about, at best? It just gives me a headache.

/feels a collective mental slap coming on.

2003-08-19 10:31:08 AM
Anyone who isn't a sucker already knew astrology is crap, but there's a sucker born every minute. Nomatter how conclusively you prove astrology, psychics, and all that other paranormal stuff is baloney, people who want to believe in it still will. It is unfortunate that more and more people believe in that shiat every day. Another dark age may not be far off.

2003-08-19 10:31:10 AM
Unfortunately, people seem to be content believing myths in the face of a crushing lack of evidence.

If people demanded to actually SEE evidence for everything they know/believe, then we would all live in a very tiny bubble surrounded by our homes and families. That's about it.

Even the non-religious types take the scientists on their word. Have you ever actually SEEN the calculations that lead them to particular conclusions?

How many people believe/disbelieve evolution and don't know what a mutation is? I know many who fit that description.

Astrology = convenient personality profiles = preconceived stereotypes = compatibility shorthand? Say, Leo = type A personality or something. Other than that, I dunno. Good for picking up some New Age poony?

I miss Oolong.

What happens when you get addicted to those symbols in that Alchemy game, and you learn to much astronomy?
Astrology!

I'd rather argue than write a program. :)

Of course! We should believe everything we are told, just because it take too much effort to be skeptical!

Another piece to the puzzle.

I thank my lucky stars I'm not superstitious!

Perhaps I should rephrase. If people could not believe anything without seeing it, they could never read a newspaper. They could never read a scientific magazine like Discover or Scientific American. They'd never believe their car owners manuals (after all, were you there when your car was built??).

We take things on faith every minute of every day.

This is why critical thinking skills are so important. People should be able to recognize when claims are too outrageous to be true, or are in need of scrutiny. We believe our car manuals because our cars work. We drive them every day, therefore we have evidence to back up what the manual says.

At some point you have to take scientists at their word don't you? Not everybody can or wants to understand what a mutation is. But if the greater part of the scientific community accepts something than they will accept it too.
At least you know the scientists have run the experiments and published the evidence, even though not everybody can understand all of it.
But if the answer to a question is "because the lord works in mysterious ways" with no proof offered to back it up then you can be skeptical.
