Jim from Saint Paul: NaziKamikaze: See, now this is the tab wrestling links need to go to. I will never argue the physicality of the act, but it is missing the more important component to be a sport: fair competition.

Wherever they get approved. We will follow. We don't care which topic it's under.

It's still Showbiz to me, dammit!

meatofmystery: Meanwhile, Ric Flair will be the Abe Vigoda of Professional Wrestling.

I just pictured Abe Vigoda in trunks yelling Woooooooo! followed by a coughing fit.

Any lifestyle that involves living on the road on almost a year round basis is going to take years off your life. I had a job where I traveled a lot in a rather mundane, white collar job and I had to eventually leave because for my own health because it was just too much stress, too much crappy road food, too little sleep thanks to the jetlag and crappy hotel beds, too much spending lonely nights in hotel bars because you're isolated from the support of friends and family. Throw in a ton of booze and drugs and you get the average life expectancy of a wrestler or rock n roll band member. Wrestling even more so when you throw in all the performance enhancing drugs that spike testosterone levels through the roof and raise blood pressure and red blood cell counts. Although it's hard to strictly blame PEDs when Sly Stallone eats chemical cocktail omelette's for breakfast and looks like he's about mid-30's when he's pushing 70.

Fiction: Snubbed by the Canadian mob over smuggling cigarettes!

The Canadian mob is very polite. If you undermine them by smuggling black-market cigarettes, they simply stop inviting you to things.

Don't know if anyone listens to The Art of Wrestling podcast (hosted by failed WWE wrestler Scotty Goldman/Colt Cabana) but he has wrestlers on every week. One of the running gags is how much of a dick every thinks CM Punk is the first time they meet him. Most do go on to like him but I guess he comes off like an ass.

I can respect that he practices what he preaches--never does drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. But he does strike me as the type who would be really self-righteous and have a superiority complex about it.

Lameface: Additionally, six more talents who joined WCW after 1998 have since passed on - Chris Candido, "Dr. Death" Steve Williams, Mike Awesome, Rhonda Singh, Sherri Martel and The Wall. All six deaths listed occurred before the age of 50.

This list isn't very fair.

Candido died of complications from infection after surgery on his broken leg. Dr. Death died of Cancer. Awesome is known to have committed suicide and it's highly assumed that Singh did the same.

Basically, the wrestling lifestyle tends to attract easily influenced or already degenerate people.

I do wonder what has a worse track record though - professional wrestling or child stars in Hollywood.

Better yet: How about the roster for Starrcade '83..?

Go Fast Turn Left: Lameface: Mike Awesome

Wait, Mike Awesome died?! Sonofabiatch!

Crash Holly is gone, too, as is Andrew "Test" Martin, Bad News Brown, Junkyard Dog...

/Got to a point where I'd have to hold my breath right as Raw was coming on, expecting someone else to die.

Yeah ,but none of those other guys could rock the mullet like Mike Awesome. Dude had a fantastic one going well into the 2000s.

Meanwhile, Mae Young is still alive and still making the occasional television appearance. She appears to be having more issues with her mobility than she did a few years ago when she and Moolah we're running around on Raw in the early to mid 2000s, but then the Dudleys did put her through a table (and got berated by her when they tried to take it easy).

gadian: Hmm, I'd tend to classify that life style as "high risk". I'd be rather disappointed if everyone with a high risk lifestyle lived to be 80. Then where's the consolation of being low-risk?

This, plus now that the cold hard realization of what this lifestyle does to the wrestlers is becoming known, the industry (well, WWE mostly) has been working hard to clean up its act. It'll take another 20 years or so before we know how well it's working out.

NaziKamikaze: See, now this is the tab wrestling links need to go to. I will never argue the physicality of the act, but it is missing the more important component to be a sport: fair competition.

I'd prefer these links in the Showbiz tab, personally. I don't read the Sports tab.

Like trying to cure a cancer that they themselves caused.

I won't claim that substance abuse and fatigue didn't exist before Vince McMahon took pro wrestling national and loaded the card with gassed-up superheavyweights in the early '80s, but those changes to the business certainly didn't do anything positive for worker health.

Nor did the hardcore era that took hold throughout the business in the late '90s, when guys would literally stab each other with scissors and throw themselves off balconies for a thousand fans in a South Philly warehouse.

You look at guys who were stars back in the regional days of the business -- Lou Thesz, Bruno Sammartino, Verne Gagne, and the like -- they lived or are living long enough to pass away of old age.

Do you think Hulk Hogan or Triple H is going to live to see 80 birthday candles?

This. He was a regular on the Wrestlecrap boards, and was very open with his battle.

Not only that, but the possibility of accumulated head trauma. Wrestling is scripted, not necessarily fake. Sure, many punches are pulled, but occupational hazards still exist and there's the obvious pressure to keep going while you're hurt, otherwise, you'll be replaced.

You have to love all of the "wrestlers who have died early" lists. Plenty of football players have died before age 50. Life happens. There are quite a few high school aged kids who died of heat stroke during football practice.

The point of the list was that nobody who played in the 1991 Super Bowl is dead. And no one who held a major boxing belt in 1991 is dead. Football players and boxers die young but wrestlers are in a league of their own.

I was planning on wandering in & asking if anyone had actuarial data on this, but then I read tfa and noticed all the drug-related deaths. This population's a little out of the ordinary.

I wouldn't be too surprised if the top pro wrestlers from 1970 are going to outlive this class -- Wikipedia tells me that Nick Bockwinkel is still alive, and Da Crusher lived to 79... and Verne Gagne's 85, but suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

Lameface: The death rate for the wcw roster from 1998 is a more startling figure:
In its entirety, here is the list of deceased talents who performed for WCW in 1998. With the exception of one performer, all deaths listed occurred before the age of 50.

» Bam Bam Bigelow - 2007 / 01 / 19 (45)

» Chris Adams - 2001 / 10 / 07 (46)
» Chris Benoit - 2007 / 06 / 24 (40)
» Curt Hennig - 2003 / 02 / 10 (44)
» Davey Boy Smith - 2002 / 05 / 17 (39)

Additionally, six more talents who joined WCW after 1998 have since passed on - Chris Candido, "Dr. Death" Steve Williams, Mike Awesome, Rhonda Singh, Sherri Martel and The Wall. All six deaths listed occurred before the age of 50.

Really creepy is all the referees that have died. Are the refs doing roids, too? Or are they mysteiously disappearing?

A lot of times, pro wrestling referees are guys who weren't big or talented or charismatic enough to succeed as wrestlers. Brady Boone, for example, made a few WWF appearances as "Battle Kat" in 1990 before becoming a referee.

In the cases of Shooter Mark Curtis and Pee Wee Anderson, it was cancer that killed them, not anything related to their profession.

Umm, am I missing something here? That figure is light years away from "staggering". Just another piece written by a mark that doesn't realize the complexities of the business. Especially back all those years ago before the companies actually started caring about their performers and before the feds got involved. Nice try with the mark piece, tho. Not really.

"The Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich - died at 33 from suicide one day after he was "indicted on a drug charge for prescription forgery"

Did you realize the entire time he wrestled in the WWF he only had one foot? He had a history of drug use. The entire Von Erich family was cursed.

Dino Bravo - died at 44, shot to death in a hotel room

He was bootlegging cigarettes and was killed gangland style in a firestorm of bullets.

Andre the Giant - age 46, congestive heart failure

Giantism. He died of old age, basically, given their life expectancy.

Joey Marella - died at 31; fell asleep at the wheel

This was Gorilla Monsoon's son. The wrestler's and ring crew do have to get where they're going themselves.

"The British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith - dead at 39, steroid cocktails, HGH

Bullshiat. He died of a staph infection that he got when he was backdropped on a trap door used during the stupid One Warrior Nation angle in WCW.

Mr. Perfect - died at 44; cocaine, painkillers, steroids

He did die of a cocaine overdose.

Miss Elizabeth - died at 42 from a drug and alcohol overdose

This is true as well. Still shady circumstances. I'm looking at you FlexyLexy.

Hawk - died at age 46, apparently of a heart attack

I wonder when he said "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WATTA RUSHHHHHHHH" that it was the drugs kicking in.

Hercules - died at 47, allegedly from heart disease

Didn't even know he was dead until now.

Big Boss Man - died at 41, heart attack

Had a history of heart problems. Nothing suspicious. He wasn't on drugs.

Earthquake - died at 42, allegedly of bladder cancer

ALLEGEDLY? fark you, mark. fark you. Not cool. The man died of cancer that he fought for a long time. Fought hard, too.

Sensational Sherri - died at 49; accidental overdose of drugs, including high amounts of oxycodone

No, she didn't. It's still not known exactly what happened to her. Lying sack of shiat.

Crush - died at 44; drugs are believed to have played a part, but that's unconfirmed (lots of details here, though)

Wouldn't doubt this one, but it' still heresay.

Randy Savage

I don't know enough about this to comment other than it was a heart attack while driving. I known people deep in the business, and I've never heard of him doing anything other than smoke weed and drink coffee.

From what I heard Tanaka hated working with Awesome, mainly down to the chair beanings. Maybe he had a point.

Actually, he did die of a heart attack, and the autopsy revealed that anabolic steroids may have played a part, although the exact cause was not found. To top it off, he died while vacationing with his ex-brother-in-law's (Bruce Hart) estranged wife.

And as noted earlier, the "allegedly" regarding Earthquake's passing was distasteful. The man fought a two-year battle against cancer, a fight that he had chronicled online.
