It's pretty much the same exact design only slightly smaller than the SR-71.

There is an SR-71 mothballed at our local "Air Zoo" at an indoor hanger. I've spent quite a bit of time walking around that jet. One of my all time favorites.

That, and it carried missiles.

Because it is an SR-71. That's the 2nd A-12 (the test name of the SR-71), airframe number 60-6939, produced for test purposes. This is hardly news. The photos appear to be news however.

Exactly, the only newsworthy part of this is the release of the photos. It's no secret that the A-12 was the predecessor to the SR71. David Darlington's book Area 51: The Dreamland Chronicles contains a great account of the origin and early use of the site, including the early U2 and A12 tests. Quite the leading headline though, Subby. Just like the pros do it (although the article clearly states the crash was in Utah, not Nevada.

Seconded. Fantastic book, especially when you realize that the SR71/A12 were designed with slide rules. The passages on testing the fuel for it are amusing too.

Yeah, I loved the parts about the SR-71 pilots who lived in Sacramento. They'd drive out to Beale AFB in the morning, fly over to western Alaska/eastern Russia for reconnaissance missions, and be home in time for dinner.

Area 51 and other various well-known secret bases aren't there to keep things hidden, rather it's to let foreign nations see the neat toys you created while keeping them far enough away they don't find out that the secret paint is based off of silly putty and if you tune your radar to exactly 10,248.163 megacycles and look for the return pulse's polarity rotated 71.8 degrees from whatever you transmitted, you can track these things all day long.

When my father was at Macguire AFB, an SR-71 had engine trouble and had to land. They kept it way out on
the tarmac, surrounded by the biggest and most trigger-happy APes they could find. This was sometime in the
early 80s.

I got much closer to the one at the Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles.

Ya' know... I was thinkin' that as I clicked "Add Comment."

We are still doing incredible things. But they're way, way, way up in space, and unmanned. The SR-71 is incredible (*especially* given when it was designed), but launching something into space that can take pictures of [what do you think it is now? License plates? A legible piece of paper?] is pretty impressive, too.

It's just more sterile, less immediately impressive/approachable and less human....

SFSailor: ... that we know of?

That would be it. There's some good, non-tinfoil hat variety, circumstantial evidence something cooler exists. Started out with a few reports of odd contrails and other stuff in the late 80s. And if you stick with the good stuff, not the tinfoil hat stuff, it does seem a fair bit of it would point towards Area 51 as the base for the plane.

Well, there's some confirmed stuff, like the X-37 B Space Plane

And then there's the speculation, like Gary McKinnon's alleged discovery of a space fleet
