Is it common practice for police officers to leave their cars running and unlocked when dealing with people? I would think that they would take their keys out of the ignition and carry them with them just for this very reason.

miss diminutive: Is it common practice for police officers to leave their cars running and unlocked when dealing with people?

Yes. It's way more common for an officer to need to jump into his car to chase a fleeing person, than for a person to try to steal the car.

That makes sense when the other person is in a car themselves...but the only car she had access to was his. Then again, there's no way he could have known she was whacked out on crazy juice.

Yeah your average person isn't going to steal an idling police cruiser, it's just a powerfully bad idea. So they do leave them run often based on that.

Oh yes, another person who thinks all cops are out to get everyone and none of them could ever try to help another person.

He was called about someone walking down the interstate with children, got out, and was talking to her. What do you think he was talking to her about?

AbbeySomeone: Hey subby, where do you get the idea the officer was trying to help her?

The other day, my family and I drove into the CVS parking lot, and there was some dude laying there sleeping on the sidewalk, with his feet it the area where cars drive by.
We all laughed about this at first... But after we finished our errands in the complex, we drove out the same way to find a patrolman and partner there talking with the guy.

My daughter was like, "OMG! He's gonna get arrested isn't he?!"

My answer was... "Not unless he does something crazy or stupid. The cops are just there to tell him he can't pass out there, and maybe actually protect him from his own stupidity. They are actually trying to help him."

And that answers your question too. This cop wanted to get to the bottom of matters and possibly help. He had no idea the woman was batshiat loopy and would do what she did.

//At least the kids are safe, and she won't be any danger to them any longer.

2011-05-23 01:45:52 PM
Poor kids. Hard to say if they are more or less farked now. On one hand, they saw their Mom lose her shiat and get shot by cops. On the other hand, just about every other alternative is an upgrade from being raised by someone who would steal a cop car and leave them on the side of the road.

The "lady" in this case is from Sanford Florida.

This is one example of why I figured that the "some big dummy is setting fires in sanford" story must have been urban improvement.

After reading the follow up I think something is amiss here. This girl was bringing her kids to the grandparents for the summer. How did this go down? How did she end up ditching her kids and stealing a cop car? I bet she got drugged along the way, or something fishy is going on. Was the cop car rolling downhill when it crashed? Makes you wonder if he didn't shoot her, then stuff her in the car.

She stabbed him. He didn't need to cover anything up. Besides... there were plenty of witnesses: the kids, and the traffic.

Perhaps. Not like it should have been too hard to figure it out with just another question or two to that guy they interviewed who ran over to the car when it crashed.

For instance: "Was there any blood on the outside of the door when you ran up?" It sounds like there wasn't, and even thought that doesn't guarantee that she wasn't outside when she was shot... it does make it much more likely that she was shot inside the car rather than outside.

What I am wondering is shooting at a woman who is fleeing a scene after cutting an officer on the hand a reasonable use of force?

/Serious question, I'm not sure what the answer is myself.
//I mean, she could have crashed that car into another vehicle or pedestrians after being shot, shouldn't the cop just have called for backup and waited instead of trying to wound her while she was speeding away in a car?

mongbiohazard: it does make it much more likely that she was shot inside the car rather than outside.

I don't guess it matters really. Any ho that's crazy enough to stab a police officer and steal his car is a rather immediate threat to everyone's safety, and needs to be stopped.

Yes, cops love to shoot innocent people for no reason, because it's not like those incidents ever get investigated or anything. They can pretty much shoot whoever they want whenever they want all the time with no repercussions. That's why whenever you see cops, they're always shooting people.

I think most cops are shiat, stuff likes this just reaffirms my suspicions.
