There's no anger so great as that of spoiled, entitled brats who face losing their fat unemployment benefits..

Madrid has always been rather strict when it comes to youthful exuberance against the government. I was there during the MacroBotellin a few years back. All the other cities in Spain were having huge street parties to celebrate illegal drinking in the parks. In Madrid, they were beating down kids and taking them to jail.

Ban demonstrations? But I just downloaded Oxyron for my C64!

Subby knows Spain was a dictatorship until the 70s, right? So there are still plenty of people alive there who think that was an acceptable way to be...

Don't be so surprised subby. It's the same country that makes it *illegal* to work on Sundays except for emergency services. Yeah, chew on that one.

I think it's because Spain has laws about rallies and demonstrations within 48 hours of elections.

2011-05-21 02:33:10 PM
So what exactly are the protestors' demands?

I get that they are upset about unemployment and general global economic conditions. But what do they want to be done about it? Do they want a bankrupt government to somehow provide government jobs for all the unemployed?

They're the #13 GDP in the world, if I remember correctly. You must not like wine, olive oil, or wind turbines.

Don't worry, Zombie Franco will suppress the demonstrations.

I didn't see anything in the article about what they want the government to do to lower the unemployment rate, or what policies they blame for the unemployment rate.

42% unemployment for ages 15-24. Someone needs a war. Hell, we have three. We should give them one of ours.

"Sanders is a self-described democratic socialist,[1][2] and has praised European social democracy. He is the first person elected to the U.S. Senate to identify as a socialist.[3] Sanders caucuses with the Democratic Party and is counted as a Democrat for the purposes of committee assignments, but because he does not belong to a formal political party, he appears as an independent on the ballot. He was also the only independent member of the House during much of his service there."

He's not really a socialist, it is just the label he uses for himself. Call me when we elect someone running for the socialist party on a socialist platform.

Clearly the pharmaceutical companies in the US need to make mandatory drugs for all US Citizens that get rid of our wasteful and non-productive desire to sleep. Then when all US citizens are working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, we will be fulfilled and happy.

March forth, peons. Produce shiat! Consume shiat! Do not rest until this world is knee deep in products!

We must continually produce, produce, and produce! Our appetites are insatiable! Do not sleep and keep the gears turning!

I've briefly read up about the protests on several sites, but I have yet to hear a proposal being put forth by the protesters which would be more effective than the government's current plan or cutting their deficit and restructuring their economy.

Yes, it is unpleasant and unfortunate that austerity cuts must be made to lower their nation's deficit, but what other options are there? I assume they can default on their debt, but I'm sure economists have run through that scenario and probably decided it would be worse for the country.

IANAE, but I'm assuming that Spain defaulting on the debt would have serious negative consequences for the Euro, and therefore affect all the Eurozone countries.

Not really sure how you can have all these countries with a common currency and monetary policy, but without a common fiscal policy. Seems like a recipe for trouble.

Spain prohibits political gatherings within 24 hours of elections, which are tomorrow. It's called "Day of Reflection". I believe the purpose was to keep conspiratorial bodies at bay, but it also extends to citizens as well. And I heard from someone who lives there that the protesters are just protesting because they've got shiat else to do.

Ehh

Unemployment is killer in Spain. On the other hand, the college students there want to study law or medicine if they are grinds, and the liberal arts if they are slackers. There's practically no study of business or engineering. It's part of the cultural legacy of its golden age, when the gente bien could, say, repair a shoe, but not make a shoe. Not to mention the more recent civil war that pitted the commie/anarchist types against the capitalist/fascist types, which the fascists won. The fachas like it when unemployment is high and the police crack heads.

Spain made a hard-turn left, and now is experiencing some hints of totalitarianism?

Who could ever have imagined that consequence?

Ok, who the hell brought back Franco from the dead? I make sure very morning to see that he's still rotting on his grave, and some asshole just happened to have brought him back.

Do you have any idea how much effort I do to make him stay dead!? Do ya!? HUH!?.

Well maybe if they are anything like the US, Greece or Ireland, they let the rich and the banks do whatever they want and then punish the middle class and poor when the economy shiats itself. I'm not very knowledgeable about Spain's current tax structure, but we already know that type of policy is a recipe for disaster and austerity measures won't do anything to solve them.
