Yes, but at least this recall isn't happening because people couldn't figure out how to vote. Well, sort of.

Big difference:

Florida - Looks at ballot, drools, picks nose, thinks "Hey, me likes Gore...Me Vote Gore", then votes for Bush.

California - Believed what our crooked incumbent Gov. was telling us regarding the budget so he could get elected; one more lie on a monstrous stack of lies and BS (the power crisis last year and the car tax are a couple of the other biggies). Then we wnet into the booths and filled out the car properly.

"Action star Arnold Schwarzenegger, former child star Gary Coleman and porno mogul Larry Flynt are among the 135 candidates..."

...and all three of them are far and away more honest and qualified than Jeb Bush.

P.S. - Tell your daughter to stay out of my medicine cabinet.

Hey, I saw the butterfly ballot...there's no way I could have correctly filled that out if I was stupid!

nitpick--the people mistakenly voted for Pat Buchanan, not GWB. Even Pat himself said there's no way all those Jewish people in Palm Beach County meant to vote for him.

Grocery store chain Trader Joe's is giving out "Charles Shaw for Governor" bumper stickers in California.

For those of you who don't know what Charles Shaw is, its the 2 dollar wine that is affectionately called "Two buck Chuck". Trader Joe's started a national craze of low priced wines with it.

I guess so, but you'd have to be really really stupid.

And yes I am proudly sporting a "Charles Shaw for Governor" sticker on my car.

At least the California debacle has some elements of humor to it.

Interestingly, a number of Democrats and Democrat-allied groups have filed suit to get the recall delayed because their voters allegedly can't handle the reduced number of polling places and other changes to the voting system. In Florida, it was the Democrat members of Congress who were squawking that their constituents flubbed their ballots. My question is why is it always Democrats who are so lunkheaded that they can't figure out how to vote?

And it's good wine too, not favorited!. Recommended.

And all of them have children that are not thieving crack-ho's. And all of them have wives who are not jewelry smugglers.

"I feel people don't need to be laughed at," she said. "We didn't like it, and I don't think people in California would like to be laughed at because of this."

Oh yeah, there are no other reasons to laugh at those of us in California.

Hell, I'd be laughing my ass of at this whole debacle.... if I didn't live here.

If there are chads involved, the Republicans will win, I'll betcha anything.

FL is just happy to've finally shrugged off the dubious honor of being "laughing stock of the union".

Now its back where it belongs, right here in good ol' california.

We're all a buncha fruitbats.

Officially this makes the third election Republicans have tried to steal:

Clinton impeachment
Gore election
Davis Recall

Why do we even bother having elections anymore?

2003-08-18 02:05:53 PM
2 buck chuck ROCKS!!!

It's a cheaper way to get drunk than a 40

PLUS! It tastes goood. ( the greatest boon to a college guy since rohip)

2003-08-18 02:06:45 PM
The common factor in both situations--and in the one in Texas, too--is that Republicans aggressively have attacked Democracy's status quo--and the Dems still haven't gotten their acts together to communicate/enact any sort of defense.

It just goes to show that old people and celebrities are the ones farking up the whole system.

Go Gary Coleman!

"California - Believed what our crooked incumbent Gov. was telling us regarding the budget so he could get elected..."

And even though you guys just elected him, now you want to recall him ? I would bet the farm that no matter who the governor will be, they in no way will be able to deal with the budget mess anyways; you might as well elect a HP Calculator as your next guv'nor.

Not to mention, this recall effort will add $550 mil to the deficit anyways. Now I understand why, as corrupt and cheesy as Las Vegas was, they hated people from California.

Young_Fart

Isn't it ironic that the Republicans think recalling valid elections mean more democracy?

2003-08-18 02:11:22 PM
The thing is Democrats can't get together on the same page long enough to have a single cohesive action.

Democrats are like women in an office....the only thing they each hate more than their bosses is one another. Meanwhile their bosses are getting drunk on the golfcourse.

Yeah, I'd say that analogy pretty much sums up American politics.

2003-08-18 02:13:59 PM
As an earlier farker posted, this is apples and oranges.

Florida is being made fun of because they couldn't count and/or follow the lines. California is being made fun of because our Governor lied his way into office and screwed every Californian.

I fail to see the similarity.

2003-08-18 02:15:19 PM
If someone told me that you could take over the strongest nation on earth with a holepunch, I would not have believed them..
Welcome to the Three Ring holepunch circus that is our election system. This country is being taken over, and the free thought of the people is being bound to the ground by a Five Star 3 ring binder.Imagine losing your freedoms to a little hole punch from an Office Depot Back to School Sale!

mangomango, the recall is a valid election, too. And btw, I'm not a Republican if that's what you're thinking.

2003-08-18 02:18:23 PM
Young_Fart does this mean that the country can do a recall election?

2003-08-18 02:18:35 PM
I dunno about the whole hole-punch thing.

I mean...people that are too stupid to vote.....is this who we need deciding the fate of the country?

Maybe we need to make the ballots harder.

To vote for Gore please solve the following question....if the cosecant of X is 3.25.....

Nah....nevermind. Democrats get to do "Word Find."

wakarimason

Are you suggesting we recall every politician who lied on the campaign trail? Cause we're gonna be awfully busy if that's what you want.

2003-08-18 02:19:57 PM
mangomango

Who was in charge of the ballot design and format in the Florida precincts where the problems occurred? I think it was a Democrat.

2003-08-18 02:20:45 PM
Never mind the fact that the California energy crisis was due to blatant price gouging by Bush's Enron buddies. Then another prominent Republican finances the recall initiative. Hmmmm....

2003-08-18 02:21:09 PM
Why is there a debate over recalling Ray Davies?
I remember him fondly.

2003-08-18 02:21:25 PM
As long as hole-punch ballots have existed, the citizens of this country have been the puppets of the hole-punches, which were considered harmless, even as they manipulated the hands of many Americans to select candidates they did not vote for. The hole punches would elect different parties to power, based only on who would serve the hole-punches' needs, not on those who would serve the needs of the American people...

2003-08-18 02:21:52 PM
All the sun on both coasts creates baked brains (yum, more brains).
I say we saw off Florida and let it drift into Cuba, and nuke the fault lines and sink California.

2003-08-18 02:22:34 PM
(2003-08-18 02:15:19 PM Cthulus_Toaster): If someone told me that you could take over the strongest nation on earth with a holepunch, I would not have believed them..

Hint: go with that instinct. The news organizations did a recount like everyone was whining for and found that Bush still won. The Clinton defenders were always saying "move on" so why don't you take that advice?

2003-08-18 02:22:47 PM
You are not a good voter unless you vote early AND vote often.

Mock Gore if you wish, but with the best and stongest military in the world at it's command, the Bush administration still cannot find WOMD, Osama, or Saddam. Make Gore's fibbing about 'inventing the internet' (misquote) look like a non issue, which it always was.

The hole punches rule us then, not the parties...

/crawling out from under rock...

Can somebody please explain to me (in 25 words or less) what this recall of Gray Davis is all about? I hadn't been paying any attention initially (I'm from Ontario and have our own political woes to worry about..) and all I've heard is that he is being recalled and all these people are running for governor. Every news item I read now assumes the reader already knows why there is a recall.

Help me out here, please?

Having Floridians make fun of California's election is like having Iraqis make fun of U.S. electricity. oh wait....

at least in NY, things like terrorism and power outages are caused by non New Yorkers. California brought this all on themselves. I say we let California go and become its own country. Same with Texas.

We could solve this whole Democrat vs. Republican thing by just voting Libertarian.

2003-08-18 02:28:17 PM
As far as I know, the law permitting executive recalls in California was passed by a duly, democratically elected California government. Thus, the invocation of this recall law by the California voters IS democratic.
