There's nothing I like more than people doing completely legal activities but making them look illegal.

That may have been the intent, but it's not like they stuck beer labels on cans or did anything deceptive. They bought a keg of root beer and drank from disposable cups. What else are you going to do with a keg of root beer?

Making noise is a separate activity than drinking root beer from a keg.

Zebro purchased a quarter-barrel of 1919 Classic American Draft Root Beer

You can get quarter barrels of root beer? That would be cool for a cookout. Placed next to the real beer, that is.

On a related topic, "arrested for resisting arrest" is only topped by "arrested for underage drinking, will be charged as an adult" in my book.

Roll your own herbal cigarettes. Be sure to keep your smoking material in a baggie and taper the paper at both ends.

I hate it when people use the "but if just one person got hurt" reasoning to justify massive wastes of time & intrusion into the privacy of scores of citizens.

Yep. One of my local breweries also makes soda pop, which makes sense because they've got all the equipment already, and some of it goes into kegs. I remember them going through a fair number of them around the time of high school open house parties.

I am amazed that not a single person was drinking there. That, in and of itself, shows that they did this just to get the cops there. They got together and said, "Hey, we're going to show how stupid these people (school officials and cops) are. Show up, have fun, but make sure you don't drink...til the cops leave. More power to them.

I love how after finding tons of people with ZERO alcohol in them the cops still had to rationalize checking every single person and basically being a bunch of douchebags.

kids: 1, cops: 0

2011-05-10 02:57:58 PM
In high school, the cops would show up and just kick everyone out. They would never take the time and energy to actually breathalyze 90 or some ought kids. I didn't think cops actually cared about this.

Also, I would LOVE to hear the superintendents thoughts on this...

That's one of the things I've never understood about people getting busted from You-tube or Facebook. You can smoke tobacco from a bowl or a joint. Apple juice looks like flat beer, etc. Other than showing stealing something or destruction of property, how can a video that was staged prove anything?

FTA: "It was a tremendous waste of time and manpower, but we still had a job to do, and our officers did it," Joling said. "If one kid had come there, even hadn't drank there, but had come there and had been drinking and had left and crashed and burned, then what would the sentiment be? Why didn't the police check everybody out?"

So... it was a waste of time and manpower, but they should've wasted more of it? What?

More importantly, where did the police get the justification to administer 90 breathalyzer tests? They found an army of high school kids drinking root beer. No minors in possession, no alcohol present, THEY HAD NO PROBABLE CAUSE TO JUSTIFY ANY SEARCH AT ALL!

back when i was a freshman in college i went out w/ a friend one night w/ no specific plans and the intention to crash as many parties as possible. this was all going smashingly (and we were smashed) until we stumbled in to another party, wandered up to the keg.... and were faced with a bunch of highly disapproving evangelicals and their root beer keg.

/took some anyway
//went next door and found vanilla vodak to add to it...

It was a classic cop set up. Since there was a party, the cops assumed the teens were drinking alcohol. When they announced on the patrol car's loudspeaker to move the cars that were blocking the road (which I doubt), they were attempting to bust someone for DUI.

1) Given lawful order by police to move your car
2) Move car
3) Given breathlizer test
4) Busted for DUI
5) ???
6) Profit!

I knew people back at school that rolled their own cigarettes. They were never bothered by the police (because the cops could distinguish between weed and tobacco scents) but administrators, RA's and other students would give them hell.

My friends & I got pulled over (this was back in '95 when I was a teenager) because the cop thought my Pepsi Max bottle looked like a stubbie beer bottle.

//didn't they stop making those in the 70s??
//seems like sometimes cops look for reasons to cause teenagers trouble

2011-05-10 03:34:57 PM
If they weren't purposely making it appear as a "booze party" than all the cop haters here might have a point. These kids knew exactly what they were doing. If anyone was wasting the cops' time it was the kids. Fortunately for them it's not illegal to be a wise ass.

/I was once pulled over when a cop saw my friend in the passenger seat drinking a root beer.
//we all had a good laugh.

I was walking down the street in Boston when a BU cop cut me off with his cruiser. I figured he was an other cop on a power trip and started to walk around the car. He jumped out and started to scream at me and demanded I show him what was in the bag that I was carrying. I refused. He told me his badge gave him the right to search me, I refused. He told me he was going to arrest me, I refused. He got back in his car and drove off like a mad man.

Stand up for your rights.

I'll bet 50 bucks that those last 3 rapes and 4 burglaries all total got less man-hours than this 1 root-beer party

FTP every last one can DIAF for all I care.
