Although the mirror-universe theme for the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "In a Mirror, Darkly" was pretty awesome.

Also late, but I feel like something should be said for the Pee-Wee's Playhouse theme, it was written by Mark Mothersbaugh and sung by Cyndi Lauper.

Yeah, they'd been using the same theme since the beginning, but the crisper re-recording really made the horns pop. Plus, Diana Rigg in full color coming around that armchair... whew.

I immediately thought of Barney Miller when I read the headline. I was quite surprised to discover that it was subby's choice too.

For me it's Night Court, Knightrider, Taxi, also had a soft spot for the Dougie Howser synth and any '80s Saturday morning cartoon theme.

Agreed. They should have hired Jerry Goldsmith again. He was dead at the time and could have done a better job.

My girlfriend isn't from the US - she moved here when she was about 14 and couldn't speak a lick of English - so a lot of my late 80s early 90s cultural references are lost on her. I was, however, still somehow astounded when she had no idea who the Thundercats are.

But now she loves this song. (new window)

"Space: 1999" was a fairly good sci-fi show during the arid period 'tween "Star Treks," and it had very good guitar-based theme music.

That's right!

As sitcoms go, it's pretty damn good. It gets one of my highest recommendations.

I believe the first three seasons are available on DVD if you wanted to Netflix that jazz.

PirateKing: All good ones in here so far.

The one that gets stuck in my head all the time is the theme from the Rockford Files. Jim Rockford always reminded me of my Dad.

When I hear the brass in some of these older shows, it makes me think our dads lived in a much classier time!

Apparently, you haven't noticed the Fox Sunday evening line up, or heard of Adult Swim? Or you were completely unaware that the WB golden age cartoons were shown in theaters before every movie, including those for adult audiences? I mean really, that's a very ridiculous question.

JeffMD: One of the best things about anime is their awesome intros and credits with their high quality sound tracks produced just for the show. We should be ashamed that the japanese can spend the money and time to create custom intros and get well known bands to write up songs to be used just for them, and we get stuck with TV series that can drag on for 4,5,6 seasons with the same intro and the same music. I'm looking at you house, NCIS.http://www.fark.com/comments/6181505/What-happened-to-TV-show-theme-songs-W hich-is-best-LGT-subbys-favorite#b

Last Exile (new window)

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (new window)

black lagoon (new window)

To Aru Majyutsu no Index (new window)

this is only 4 of many that I managed to remember and pull up in 10 minutes.

Well, I see Last Exile was covered. The song + the visuals for that always blow me away. You even linked to the same video I was going to link to. I didn't think of Higurashi though... I do love it, mainly because it's so unsettling and fits the character of the show.

I'll also have to throw in Xam'd just because I love the song so much. You can get some really amazing music out of anime, something I don't think you see as often in the US.

For pure fanboyism, I'll have to add Banner of the Stars, in all it's slightly cheesy space opera gloriousness. That video includes some bits in Baronh, which is a language created the author of the books the show is based on.

Also a fun song that makes me want to learn piano is the first opening to Nodame Cantabile.

I'm a huge Mike Post fan. In addition to the themes already mentioned, let's not forget these:

Hill Street Blues
NYPD Blue
Law and Order
L.A. Law
The White Shadow

2011-05-08 09:01:02 PM
Too lazy to see if it's been mentioned but I'll throw the Hellsing opening theme up as one of my favorite.
I'll also add Inspector Gadget, Get Smart and Cowboy Bebop.

On phone else I'd contemplate linking.
