What choo talkin bout?

Sadly, it really isn't that stupid because a sizeable portion of the voting population could actually be swayed by watching T2.

Well, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum and what might be right for you, may not be right for some. This year, vote for what's right for everyone.

GARY COLEMAN FOR GOVERNOR!

If he wins, he'll have that creepy child molestor come over to your house and touch up your kids in the shower.

Paid for by the committee to recall everyone. Eve. Ry. One.

If it were really equal time and they wanted to be fair, they should allow all the candidates to re-shoot the same episodes of Different Strokes and play the role of Arnold. Let's see Larry Flynt hop up into the top bunk.

Forget Larry Flint! I'd rather see Mary Carey . . . um . . . act. Yeah, that's it.

2003-08-12 11:28:47 PM
Holy shiat; the big news in this article (to me) is that Don Novello is in the race! That farking rocks! I'm moving to CA just so I can vote for him!

I ended every sentence in that post with an exclamation point! Someone kill me!

2003-08-12 11:30:29 PM
Well I certainly hope this equal-time nonsense won't interfere with Larry Flynt's ability to publish his award-winning publication...

I took a News Gathering class last semester, and I seem to remember learning that the Equal Time Rule was no longer used. Anyone wanna clarify that for me?

2003-08-12 11:37:31 PM
Noone back talks Arnold Schwarzenegger

2003-08-12 11:37:50 PM
Does it really friggin' matter? All the news channels have already given the nod to Schwarzenegger. Never mind that he evades questions about policy like a fly dodging a swatter.

2003-08-12 11:38:19 PM
I'm not sure why I'm supposed to care.

2003-08-12 11:39:36 PM
THIS IS GREAT!!!

I can safely watch TV without worring about accidentally seeing Arnold as "Mr. Freeze."

And maybe, JUST MAYBE, now TNT will stop airing "Kindergarten Cop" five times a friggin' day!

2003-08-12 11:39:58 PM
heehee they cant show "total recall"

2003-08-12 11:40:02 PM
The Equal Time Rule still applies, but only to certain media outlets (primarily over-the-air TV, not cable TV, radio, etc.) And anything that can be classified as "news" is not covered (an appearance on Meet the Press, for instance of campaign coverage on a network news program). But I'm not sure how it would work in a state election, as Federal law would not apply unless California has a similar statute.

Umm... last time I checked, the FCC governs the whole United States, not just California.

And that would be Senator Coleman, I wonder if he's "renting" out the domain name while he's in DC...

Damn straight! How is he not the most electable guy on the ballot? I only wish he was running as Father Guido. That would make for one kickass debate.

2003-08-12 11:50:49 PM
interestingly this weekend seemed to be full of Arnie films on TBS,TNN-TNT-Spike, and FX probably on USA as well
And since cable is excempt watch it rack up to the fullest on those channels

2003-08-12 11:50:59 PM
Ha! California, the state that generates so many of these movies and TV shows, is suddenly enforcing equal time.

Of course, this means I'd have to watch three episodes of Diff' Strokes to one viewing of T2. *shudder*

{polit}
I'm glad it's turning into so much of a circus. The whole recall thing is (as one who lives in CA) pretty much a grab-for-power joke.

I love that film that has Arnie "preggers." Comedy Gold!

Yeah, okay. So this ruling is empty in the face of fark.com. So what else is new? Did they invent the internet yet? /sarcasm

Let me get this staight... if they run, you can't show anything they ever appeared in... hmmmm....

God I wish J-Lo would run for office...

2003-08-12 11:53:54 PM
Yeah, I find it kind of depressing that, to news channels, there are two candidates in the Gubernatorial - Arnie and Gray, with the occasional amused mention of Gary Coleman. Nobody talks about Arianna or Georgy (yum!).

2003-08-12 11:54:19 PM
I thought equal time's been out since Reagan?

2003-08-12 11:54:56 PM
Since about half the population of California is running for governor there aren't enough hours in the day to give eveyone equal time.

2003-08-12 11:59:41 PM
Thanks danlbrau.

2003-08-13 12:00:00 AM
danlbrau,

It could be that Gary Coleman, the apparent underdog in this race is actually a political supergenius poised to take on the world. Perhaps alone of all of the candidates, Coleman forcasted the recall and its effects. At first the other candidates will ignore Coleman, not paying attention to his efforts. Slowly they will come to realize just how well he has positioned himself, but it will be too late as he sweeps the election in October. Using California as a stepping stone, he'll take the Presidency as just one step on his journey to total world domination.

Really, the pedigree of the idea of deformity of body hiding evil super-genius is an old one. (Cf. Some James Bond movie, I'm sure there's at least one). Coleman has only been biding his time, perhaps having invented some sort of immortality machine, or having had made a deal with space aliens for their DNA and using it as a fountain of youth, and now he means to establish himself as Nietzchean overman, lording it over the rest of mankind.

2003-08-13 01:27:20 AM
Thras: Well, duh. Haven't you seen old episodes of "Buck Rogers?"

He's going to cryogenically freeze himself and become President (of Earth, I think, but it's been a while).

What surprised me about that article was the statement that 240 candidates have signed up.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance since I don't live in the US, but I assume there's some way to narrow that field down before the actual vote? If there isn't that will lead to one hell of a ballot.

"thats funny, Predator is on FX tonight"

Hello, Equal Time does not apply to cable... Helloooooo. Also, it doesn't apply until the candidates are certified, which will be tomorrow. So I hope CBS, NBC and ABC have their Arnie marathon scheduled for tomorrow morning.

By the way, the Equal Time Rule won't apply to Davis since his name does not appear on the ballot. And if he wins, he can seek reimbursement from the State of California for all costs he incurs while running to save his skin. Ouch.

Unfortunately, no. The law was written back in 1911 to thwart the "special interests", and it requires a $3,500 filing fee and the signatures of 65 registered voters. Gary Coleman was signed up as a publicity stunt by a local radio station.

Even worse, you can get credit of 30 cents for each additional signature you receive, so if you get something like 3,000 signatures you're on the ballot gratis. There was talk that the Dem's were going to get 3,000+ true believers together to sign each others petitions to clusterf*ck the ballot, which would have cost nothing and put the whole process in limbo. But I think the reaction to thwarting the will of the 2 million people that signed the recall petition (only 900,000 were required) caused that idea to be, um, rethought.

10,000 signatures = free balot listing.

Yeah but in California you can drive from ocean to desert to mountains in like an hour.

Hahahahah California. What a joke of a state. I hope Arnold or Gary or the Stripper or the clown or monkey or robot or plant or whatever the farking thing running gets elected. I hope California just sinks away into the ocean of ignorance.

I'm gonna love to see Ca fall to pathetic pieces.

The "Equal Time" rule really stung George Takei when he ran for L.A. City Council (the seat that Tom Bradley vacated to become Mayor). One local station was showing Star Trek repeats five nights a week, and had to offer "equal time" to the other candidates in the race...all twenty-eight of them. (They started playing only episodes that did not feature Mr. Sulu.)

Takei was later approached about running for state assembly, but decided against it due to the "Equal Time" rule. In his autobiography To The Stars, he rails against the "Equal Time" rule, calling it discriminatory against people who make their living as movie or TV actors, as many do in the Los Angeles area. I wonder if Ahnold would agree with his assessment of the situation?

2003-08-13 04:34:47 AM
One of the other candidates should underwrite a cable showing of Hercules In New York. That would be some hardball politics.

That's pretty funny, yeah, my heart bleeds for the poor, unfortunate, discriminated against Los Angeles multi-millionaire movie actors.
