So what's the spread on his restatement now?

C'mon baby, no snake eyes.

2003-08-12 02:47:47 PM
If they let Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame they should let O.J. in too.

Only in America can you find such forgiveness.

Kill your boyfriend by ramming your car into his? Say you're sorry and you become First Lady Laura Bush.

Go AWOL and do community service for a drug bust the same year? Find Christ and become President George Bush.

The Unabomber needs to find Christ. Then he can work for the Republicans.

Only takes two posts for a Pete Rose story to go political. Only on Fark.

phrenile can I get a piece of that?

2003-08-12 04:12:42 PM
I wouldn't put what Pete did in the same category as what OJ did. Come on, now.

2003-08-12 04:17:06 PM
Not to mention the fact that O.J. is in the Hall of Fame.

2003-08-12 04:24:20 PM
Hell. Let's put OJ in the baseball hall of fame too. And Pete in the football hall of fame.

Ollie North preached from the pulpit of the church down the street from me last week. This bastard sold weapons to Iranian kidnappers, gave the money to nun-rapers in Costa Rica, and lied to Congress about it. But he still wears a uniform and has a show on FOX.

If we can forgive Ollie North, surely we can forgive OJ and Pete Rose.

2003-08-12 05:49:04 PM
Hell. Let's put OJ in the baseball hall of fame too. And Pete in the football hall of fame.

Ok, apparently you woke up drunk today or something. And what the hell Ollie North has to do with any of this is beyond me. The fact is this story has to do with baseball denying a report about Rose being reinstated and has nothing to do with Cooperstown.

2003-08-12 08:15:25 PM
I can understand why rapists, abusers and people caught on guns/drug charges are let back into sports. All those crimes are crimes against society. Society then makes them pay for their crimes (most of the time) and when they are done with their punishment, their respective sports leagues feel that they should be allowed back into the league. Yes, they did wrong, but they paid for it and shouldn't have to serve any further punishment.

The difference with Pete Rose is that he committed a crime against the sport that he played for and professed to love. Gambling on your team, whether it is for or against them, is the most henious act that someone could ever commit against their sport. It makes a complete mockery of the game. If you gamble on your sport, people will no longer feel like they are watching an honest game. No matter how hard you try to out-hustle everyone, people will still have the thought in the back of their mind that you are doing something to throw the game.

This is why Pete Rose should never ever be allowed back into baseball and never allowed to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2003-08-12 08:40:07 PM
And what the hell Ollie North has to do with any of this is beyond me.

Ollie North is proof Americans are idiots with short memories. He disgraced his uniform but he still wears it. Just like Bush.

If Pete gets inducted, it's further proof. The shiathead never apologized in public. He's a farking tax cheat game-fixing liar. He belongs in politics. He deserves a show on FoxNews.

Pete Rose is out, and will always be out. I don't see how there's any controversy.

BTW, if Pete goes in, Shoeless Joe should go in as well...

You can harldy compare what Pete Rose did to what OJ (allegedly) did.

2003-08-12 10:29:03 PM
OJ is in the Hall, and two words for you (outside the court of public opinion)- "not guilty"

What (other than public, simpleton) court convicted Rose of betting on baseball?

2003-08-12 10:29:25 PM
Fark this...

When is Ray Liotta getting in?!?

2003-08-12 10:29:57 PM
Before the grammar police and English majors come out, I would like to say that harldy is supposed to be hardly.

What was the over/under on Pete's admittance in the Hall?
I was going to parlay it with GW's admission into MENSA.

2003-08-12 10:32:46 PM
Oddly enough, there were 14 posts when I started typing this. I guess I ruined that now, though.

Never liked Pete Rose, with his dumb ass head first slide even when there wasn't even a throw. What a hot dog.

That is the cross he has to bear, a show on Fox. Not sure if it is hell as much as mine.

"He deserves a show on FoxNews."

Yeah, him and Marge Schott.

Wow...second post, and it's threadjacked by a hard-left nutcase with an axe to grind.

P.S. OJ is already in the Hall.

Ollie is a biatch. His only salvation is that he has affiliated with the Republican party that got re-elected, then voted out. The publicity window opened just enough for him to shove his ego through...

It's all a matter of timing... even if he is a half-assing semi-traitor that obeyed orders rather than obeying his original oath...who cares? He represents the feelings of 20% of the voting public.

I hope he pulls a Herb Brooks on us. At least it wouldn't be as big of a loss...

control loses control and writes:

If they let Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame they should let O.J. in too.

O.J. is in the Football Hall of Fame, asshat. Not even a double murder...oopssss....being charged with double murder and being found "not guilty" gets you thrown out. The hall of fame in most sports is for what you did on the field, not off, not years later. Apparently baseball likes to be different...or pretends to be superior, that is. At this rate their going to be "superior" until no one beyond the Hudson river cares to watch the game, but I digress...

Pete Rose was never found by Major League Baseball to have bet on baseball. While that might be a technicality to many people, it's a very big one. It leaves Major League Baseball the option to do the right thing--and give Rose justice, including finding him guilty of the crime that he was accused of--if not, left him in the farking door of the Hall of Fame with an apology.

As for the rest of your rant, go download an instant message program and find someone who cares....

Actually, you can. Most schools only require that you get a "C' average, which is what he got. And that's even with being in a cake major like business and management, which turns out people exactly like the Pointy-Haired Boss in Dilbert.

If he worked his ass off and learned a lot, and still could only maintain a "C" average, that would be one thing. But from everything I've read about the current prez, he has absolutely no intellectual curiosity at all, and never did; he's only interested in what most MBAs are--"How do I come out on top in this (insert whatever)?" Very Machiavellian/egocentric indeed.

2003-08-12 10:47:12 PM
At least Pete was a solid performer.
/we might as well have norm crosby in the White house.

2003-08-12 10:47:57 PM
Rose never admitted guilt but accepted lifelong ban. Sounds like a roundabout admission to me. What I don't get is why has his reinstatement application been "pending" for 6 years. Look at the facts, make a decision, done. Seems to me they are hoping Pete disappears so they don't have to make a decision. Lets be honest. If you looked at Bud Selig and didn't know who he was, wouldn't you say to yourself, "I bet that guy is a idiot".

2003-08-12 10:49:38 PM
Jabber has the strongest case so far. I am inclined to agree with him.

control:

Um... how about no.

Icepal:

Having wealth allows for one to have other social benefits.

You have benefits because of your position (or because of your parents position) that most normal people don't have. You just don't see it as wrong. I do too. I admit it though. I am cheating several "systems" (non-monetary) and not thinking anything of it.

It's all relative.

And the clever "shrub" name thing is makes your argument look all the more valid.

/end sort of threadjack but not really mode now.

He looks like what he is, a used car salesman, which is pretty much synonymous w/something like an idiot.
Seriously. He made his millions basically trying to make as many excuses as possible to sell people a bunch of shiat; and now he's doing it still, only with a bunch of steroid freaks and "radical realignment" policies. And I'm a huge FAN of baseball...just not of this boob.

2003-08-12 10:52:04 PM
Pete should be only partially re-instated. He should be eligible for the Hall of Fame, able to attend Reds and Phillies world series reunions, and other such ceremonies, but he should never be allowed to manage again. Gambling addictions are incureable. He will either fall off the wagon, or be accused of doing so, and everyone will believe it.

2003-08-12 10:52:16 PM
"Most schools only require that you get a "C' average, which is what he got. And that's even with being in a cake major like business and management, which turns out people exactly like the Pointy-Haired Boss in Dilbert."

And let us not forget that his daddy was a rich alum and his grandpappy was at the time on the Yale Board of Regents. Conservative apologists will tell us this is a coincidence.

2003-08-12 11:01:53 PM
The real reason Pete isn't "in":
People might mistake the Induction ceremony for a "Stooge" reunion, and you know how un-PC they've become.

2003-08-12 11:12:26 PM
If they let Juan Marichal in after he intentionally hit another player in the head with a bat, then I see no problem with Pete Rose getting in.

2003-08-12 11:17:11 PM

Worf accepted discommendation. That didn't make Durras's father any less guilty at Khitomer.

Dowd Report

At least if we're going to debate, let's get Exhibit A into the courtroom.

I wonder when it became the Baseball Character Hall of Fame.
Oh, wait, Ty Cobb's still in it? Babe Ruth's still in it, too? Then can it, and let him in. 4256 hits. I can't imagine anyone touching that.

And let Shoeless Joe Jackson in, too. You don't throw a series while batting over .400 during that series.

2003-08-12 11:39:28 PM
Oh, and since I didn't make it clear, I support reinstatement, but never let him manage again.

2003-08-12 11:55:20 PM
Pete Rose was never found by Major League Baseball to have bet on baseball. While that might be a technicality to many people, it's a very big one.

Pete voluntarily signed an agreement that banned him from baseball for life in return for baseball dropping the investigation and agreeing to no finding that Pete bet on the Reds. Ask yourself, why agree to a lifetime ban if he had done nothing wrong. How many criminals have you heard of that agreed to a plea bargain which included the maximum sentence? This article is long, but Derek Zumsteg pretty much nails it.

I've got to go with the Prospectus guys on this one. I know a few of their writers, including Will Carroll, and they say their sources are solid. Three independent sources that gave them the same details. On the other hand, you've got Bud Selig and Bob Dupuy, who have lied about the state of baseball at every opportunity, including in front of Congress.

There is one rule posted in every major league clubhouse. There is one rule read to every major leaguer before the season. It says:

Rule 21(d):
BETTING ON BALL GAMES. Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year.
Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.

If the Hall decides to change their rules some day and let him in (they are not affiliated with Major League Baseball), they're free to do so. Pete Rose should never be near another job with a major league club.

2003-08-13 12:02:21 AM
Yes but the discomenndation was to prevent a civil war in the council(which happened later anyway)
As for Rose everytime it seems that Buddy is about to sign the papers to let him in the hall he screws it up.
A coupl eof months ago it seemed like a done deal then rose went of and blew some money at vegas.
While not ilegal it brings up the reason he was banned and puts a bad taste in ones mouth.
Interestingly point on PTI they started windering if Pete kept blowing things since he was able to trade on his name better with the contoversy (also bought up that he better shut up and sign since his normal elligability is over in a couple of years, and he could only get in on an excemption)

2003-08-13 12:05:59 AM
Oh, and by the way, this topic has already been argued to death (numerous times) on Baseball Primer.

2003-08-13 12:54:12 AM
The Total Farkers must be waiting for the ideal headline for the hideous Ted Williams cryogenics story on SI.
