"Quebec elects a lot of random dudes from the New Democratic Party, including one candidate who works in an Ontario pub and took a Las Vegas vacation during the campaign"

Remember this whenever there is a debate about coalitions, non-confidence, Westminster style parliaments, cause there's always a bunch of know-it-all's carrying on about how we only vote for local MPs and not party leaders.

It's correct de jure, but you can't tell me that Quebeckers didn't vote for Jack! - and not his collection of what the French media were calling 'poteaux' last night.

How were they supposed to know that Ruth Ellen Brosseau doesn't speak French and lived in Ontario? Her name sounds French enough and she's NDP.

She needs to show us a body shot though.

just goes to show you can be an absolute nobody , just find a riding where the third place party needs someone to run and you might get lucky. once your in its even easier to stay now that you're the incumbent.

Just found out my new MP is a McGill student. I'll bet she has a great perspective on the needs of middle-class families.

Oy.

Still better than the Bloc. One expects students to live in a fantasy world, Bloquistes managed to make careers out of it.

And still there are twatwaffles saying that these people would be better leaders than the Cons. WTF Canada?

She lives in Gatineau (across the river from Ontario) and works in Ottawa. True enough about the language though. Oddly, her riding is Trois-Rivieres...

If I were Jack! I wouldn't be measuring the drapes at 24 Sussex just yet...this could be a bit of a hairy term for him with a lot of real sock puppets. Not that their hearts aren't in the right place.

See my Boobies. Please vote, really, based on the Prime Minister and maybe a couple of key ministers. Beyond that, who cares? Figuratively, that is...

I almost voted based on the party leader (Layton) but went back to basics at the last minute (in the polling booth) and voted for the person in my riding that I thought would be best. She lost badly to the PC hack and I really do fear for Canada. Harper, with 40% of the popular vote, will ignore the wishes of the majority and do whatever the fark he wants. The man cannot be trusted.

Ok just for kicks, do a GIS of her, what comes back is dozens and dozens of that same shot with the thousand yard stare, and that is freaky.

The NDP's platform of tax-and-spend and living beyond their means fits very well with Quebec's sense of entitlement. I'm surprised it took them this long to get together.

Actually, come to think of it, the province is like a giant union. Constantly complain that they're not getting enough privileges (even if it's more than anybody else gets), keep threatening to walk out if you don't get your way, believe that you're somehow special and unique... The NDP must be like gods to them.

Yeah just about as much as someone who's 60 and earned a 6 figure income most of their lives. They REALLY get how it is being a middle-class family.

the only challenge is going to be for these young MP's to stand up to the plate and do their job.

yeah really, you'd expect her to have been running for the Liberals, being that McGill is a bastion of Liberal ideology. Now, if she was a Concordia student, NDP would make sense, amirite?

SumoJeb: And still there are twatwaffles saying that these people would be better leaders than the Cons. WTF Canada?

Let's scrutinize some of the Conservative candidates and MPs, shall we? They're a more successful and better funded party, so I'd expect a larger proportion of more senior and politically experienced people, but there will inevitably be a bunch of goons as well. Like this all-star (new window) who, according to my friends in Whitehorse, was convicted of breaking poaching laws while working as a "conservation officer."

Besides, when entrenched politicians are the problem, should we really be disappointed when a bunch of newcomers get elected?

Yah, very true. I'm just pissed that my FB blew up today with so many "OMG CONS MAJORITY WORLD IS ENDIIIIIIIIIIING" posts. These people have no actual desire to participate in the Canadian political system.. they just whine and claim they have no powers against the evil man. The firearms lobby in this country is proof to the contrary. If all these people spent less time whining on FB and wrote letters to their MLA and MP there would be a better chance that their opinions and views would be considered by the people in power.

Same here - she worked her ass off. All I got from the other non-Tory candidate was a flyer in my post box and the Tory did sweet f*** all, depending, it seems, on abysmal voter turnout.

Shows that sometimes no matter how hard you work you're not the one who wins, sometimes the one who wins is just lucky or in the right spot at the right time. Which, ironically, is the very reason I never vote Tory - conservatives never admit to such a thing.

Some people can multitask. Several of my friends not only post their complaints/thoughts on facebook, but also write letters and participate extensively in Canadian politics in multiple ways. And if the NDP had won, even a minority government, there would be hundreds and hundreds of Conservative supporters contemplating the formation of a Canuck Tea Party to "take back the country from the socialists"... you can count on it.

FWIW, this will quite probably be the last election in which your vote translates to money for the party of your choice. Consequently, the corporate funding behind the Conservative party will help them to increase their strength while other parties founder. Not that it will lead to more short-sighted, pro-corporate, anti-public policies and laws or anything like that...

Oh way to go. Way to vote for thirty seconds and think you are a political farking savant. Participation in politics is not about reading the newspaper and voting once every few years. It is about doing the shiat that the newspaper covers and keeping in contact with the local MP. That hardly precludes biatching on facebook.

But seriously... say what you will about the United States, we at least require you live in the same state as the congressional district you're seeking to represent. And most members have fulfilled that in reality.

Canada and the UK are a bit different there.

Oh shiat, just read that Kucinich is considering moving to Washington to run for Congress. So much for that slam.

As for Brosseau, does Quebec have much of a casino industry? maybe they can try and become the frozen Las Vegas
