Rick-mind-if-I-call-you-Dick: Anybody knowledgeable enough to comment on this? [MSNBC]: One of the helicopters was forced to land unexpectedly because the steep walls of the compound left too little air beneath it to allow it to hover over the scene as planned... The same condition made it impossible for the helicopter to take off afterward

"Too little air beneath it????" Huh? What does that matter, isn't it the amount of air ABOVE it that the blades throw down so the chopper hovers due to equal-and-opposite etc etc?

I know a few other have answered the question... but let me give you the "I worked in a science museum and have explained to forces of flight to the general public" answer.

Helicopters are actually "rotary wing aircraft." They use the same principle to fly as fixed wing aircraft: air moving over a wing-shaped surface causes a low pressure zone on top of the wing. That low-pressure zone sucks the craft into the air.

Fixed wing aircraft use airspeed to generate lift. Helos use the rotation of the blades.

When something that large moves, it displaces air. Think of it like the wake of a boat. The boat moves, it generates a wake. The faster it moves, the bigger the wake.

At altitude, that's not a problem, there is plenty of air to take it's place, and from all directions. But near the ground, that air can't be as readily replaced, because the only thing below the aircraft is ground. A helo can be sucked straight into the ground by the same forces that allow it to stay aloft.

Once the aircraft was on the ground, if it was surrounded by walls, it would be impossible to get lift. Turning the blades would suck out all of the air, and the only way air could get back in would be through the blades, or through the turbulence generated by the blade.

Good to see we've forgotten about the troops and their amazing work and have moved onto religious intolerance.

Yeah, lets focus on that but not mention the religious intolerance that radical Muslims practice and preach every day.

That makes sense.

Mostly correct, it is similar to trying to fly too fast in a helo. By restricting outbound air under the rotor it raised the ambient pressure too high and the rotors lost lift.

Andulamb: So in other words, our enemies are totally going along with the fake assassination of OBL. I wonder how the conspiracy nuts explain that.

I think that this is proof positive that AQ is a bunch of incompetent jerks.

If they had any savvy at all, they would have totally played up the hoax idea to try and keep his myth alive. Mind you, it would have been pretty hard to sustain it without the ability to put together a new Bin Laden video (but, man, they could have at least tried to fake one).

Mind you, this won't stop our own conspiracy nuts. You could deliver OBL's corpse to their doorsteps and they still wouldn't believe.

Of course he is, constant failure on the part of the GOP is sure to piss off those who make their fortunes carrying their water.

I can't wait to see how they spin this.

Well, on NPR I heard Bush's security guy trying to claim credit for it, but then I remembered this:

1. Bush disbanded the CIA team looking for Bin Laden in 2006.
Link (new window)
2. Bin Laden was not a top priority for Bush:
a target="_blank" href="http://thinkprogress.org/2006/09/14/barnes-osama/">Link (new window)

So, sorry whackadoodles, Bush totally and knowingly failed to capture Bin Laden, and that seemed to be his goal.

I don't want to make this about Dems vs. Repubs, but you know the spin is already hitting the airwaves.

Bush used Bin Laden to whip up fear and mistrust in this country, he was more valuable alive to Bush and the neocons than he was dead, end of story.

Yes, Rush Limbaugh is paid 300 million dollars because he is not significant to the current political landscape.

What Rush says in the next 3 days will be the tactic in play for the GOP on this issue.

This event hurts the GOP and is on of a string of failures for them. Sorry, you don't get to turn it around.

He's got 10 years to make travel plans.
Osama was a part of an old breed. Rag-tag bands of warriors with barely any central structure holding them together. They had the support of the local populations, and knew when and where they could get their blows in. These new guys are different. They're big into recruiting, use the internet to get the word out, and often belong to organizations that have a somewhat legitimate political arm- think Hamas and the like. Their support in the Arab world is waining- they're not the guys that defended Afghanistan from the atheist communists - they're the guys that blew up a local polling place because they wanted to keep the population fearful. They're out there putting their faces wherever they want, whenever they want to. We got Osama in large part because he got lazy and careless... staying in one place too long, getting too many trusted people, etc. The new radical Islamists fit this description perfectly: they're usually involved in well- entrenched political factions in a defined geographic area, and have vast networks of close associates to handle the business. They'll make a stupid mistake faster than Osama did, and when they do, they won't have the local population to protect them from the Infidel Westerners TM.

He's already on his final countdown./I>

This soooo much

dittybopper: Marine1: ultraholland: Marine1: move to the most remote part of Antarctica, and not let anyone know where I am.

you're not very good at hiding

Would have done Bin Laden a favor. We were able to figure things out because he chose a weird hiding spot in the middle of a populated area.

I think the problem was that in making his place more secure, he ironically made it less secure. In the end, though, I don't think it mattered much. We started watching his courier, and that led us to that place. Wouldn't have mattered if it was a hole in a cliff somewhere, a mud brick hut, some dingy apartment in Karachi, or a palace.

..
I dunno about whether it made him less secure. It took 18 years to catch him, for the richest, most militarily developed nation on earth. (Yes--18. Not 10. There have been two WTC attacks.) So his whole hiding strategy was pretty successful. Eventually something would have given him away, but I think he made his footprint as small as he possibly could make it.

Kudos to ST6, kudos to the CIA intelligence doing awesome detective work to finally pull this off.

Senescent Dawn: Air currents get wacky near hard surfaces. A helicopter can't fly under a concrete bridge for the reason you mentioned, but my understanding is they can't fly too near uneven ground or a sheer wall because of the eddies and low-pressure zones that are created.

My cousin died because of this.

He was instructed to never fly under bridges because the helicopter would drop like a rock. But, he watched too many damned James Bond movies and would not listen.

It was, however, a midterm election during a long, brutal recession, both of which are factors that always hurt the incumbent policy. A major GOP victory was inevitable. What was interesting, however, is how many of the more extreme GOP candidates like O'Donnell and Angle were not able to ride that wave to victory, and it cost them the Senate. This proves that there definitely seems to be a limit of on how well those tactics work. They also seem to work well for House races, where the voting population is much more homogenized, but the tactics fall apart when you try to use them in a Senate or Presidential race where there is a much more diverse population that isn't going to be as easily manipulated.

It is a little too soon to tell, but Obama may have a first-term that frontloaded with a lot of difficulty, only to find this a turning point. The killing of Osama is a huge win for him and his national security policy, and if the economy manages to stage even a moderate recovery all through next year, and unemployment continues to steadily drop, he'll become very hard to beat in 2012, especially with the shallow bench the GOP has right now. When Trump is able to make headlines as a likely contender for your party's nomination, it is time to worry.

Osama Bin Laden Is Dead, Major Media Mind Control Operation

Just from the name of the thread, you can almost taste the derp.

Ding dong the wicked man is dead........ Time for another short term feel good moment folks. Which means what follows will be an even bigger injection of fear in some form. Stay tuned kids......strap yourself in.

---

The whole of it has been faked from the beginning ,10 years ago

---

What's going to happen is they're going to say that insurgents all over the world are going to retaliate against us in response to Bin Laden's 'death'[]-therefore it will be 'necessary' to invade those countries. This is the final excuse in their plan for world domination.

---

Faked? Or just staged and irrelevant.

---

This is a totally staged series of events. OBL was a minor player in the 9/11 attacks, if indeed he was a player at all.

This comes at a time when the 9/11 truth FACTS are starting to be understood by the general public; it is an attempt to reinforce the government's version of the events of 9/11.

Plus, Obama gets to look like a military leader, while at the same time distracting everyone from his dubious past and questionable paperwork.

Of course, of course, he's pissed. We'd all be pissed if we found ourselves surrounded by freshly made number twos.

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Judging from the number of number twos the US Government has eliminated over the last few years, there must be a lot of them, and without Osama bin Laden, they may well be hoping for another promotion in the near future.

Being a number two is never an easy job.
