Willfully ignorant is no way to go through life, son.

Well, sorry you think so...

But look it up - you'll see that the few annoucements Ossama made were audio recordings (which could have been faked by Al Queada) or video recordings that had no indication as to when they were made (didn't reference any current events).

Kirk's_Toupee: Big Al: Long topic already, but I don't get how a man known for changing his appearance, and having body doubles, can so certainly be identified just by looking at him? And what about DNA tests? You could test his son and get a Bin Laden match, right?

As it turns out, they had something even closer: his sister's brain

ZombinLaden died in a Boston hospital a few years ago and the FBI seized her brain tissue.

Islamic tradition...demands a burial in 24 hours

I'm not sure respect for Ossama's religion is the best reason to trump world/media verification...

Who has to verify, exactly? What level of proof would satisfy you? Did we do DNA analysis on Saddam before executing him? And that's a guy who ran a whole harem of doubles and stand ins. No one questioned that capture.

From someone who remembers US foreign policy history: Saddam's trial was a dog and pony circus act.

the level of proof is a truly independent entity's eyewitness account.

The waters are murky. Bin Laden and Al queda were beasts created by the CIA. The people no longer trust the govt. Why should they?

Yes, the waters in the Arabian sea are rather murky, but a good SONAR can still "see" through it if you want to get off your deather arse and go look for him.

Think about what the hell you could possibly do with the body of Osama Bin Laden.

Keep it in a freezer for two weeks, make it available to some selected member of the media for verification as well as other governments representatives.

That way, we don't have to take just the US's word for the event.

The absolute last place in the world that would end up with a Dead Osama is the USA. They threw him into the ocean to prove a point and minimize the potential for martyrdom. There will be photographs, without a doubt.

Rush Limbaugh is now saying that playstation being hacked was part of a terrorist attack.

2011-05-02 02:27:47 PM

Weaver95: now Rush is saying that Obama pre-empted Trump's show on purpose. it was all part of some sinister plan to get 'The Donald'.

This, right here, is probably the one and only true thing Limbaugh has said today. Naturally Obama is taking advantage of the timing. Circumstances come up that let you cap a weeklong bender of shock-and-awe political assault on your biggest opponents with a holy-grail-level achievement that is likely to cement your legacy for decades to come; OF COURSE you take that opportunity. That's basic politics.

In decades to come, most heads of state will only salivate over the opportunity Obama was given here. His handling of it can only be described as a slam dunk.

Yea. Not so much, son. (new window)

That was less than four years ago. By your logic, every tape before that now has to be valid. Seeing as no rumours of his death surfaced after, every tape since should be assumed to have been vetted and authenticated.

Millennium: Thorndyke Barnhard: The islamic 24hrs burial tradition isn't always possible given extenuating circumstances and I'm pretty sure OBL being international terrorism's #1 guy qualifies as extenuating.

Problem is, we don't get to decide what qualifies as extenuating circumstances and what doesn't. That's for the Islamic community, which sadly includes the Islamists, to decide. While mainstream Islam would certainly understand, it would be trivial for OBL sympathizers to simply say that it doesn't qualify, and that would be good enough for the terrorists. Better, therefore, to keep the question from even being an issue: deny the Islamists the hook to hang their wharrgarbl on.

Damn, that's a seriously pathetic excuse right there.

Damn.

muck4doo: We didn't have problems parading Uday and Qusay around for the media. Should have done the same for OBL.

See, that's the important difference.

Texas cowboy: Two invasions, one of which is completely unrelated to the topic at hand, neither of which managing to catch more than a whiff of Bin Laden's roadrunner-like elusiveness at the cost of a couple trillion bucks and a few thousand American lives, then parades around the middling "accomplishments" with all the pride and glee of a puppy that shat on the rug and hasn't yet figured out he did a Bad Thing.

Chicago politician: Osama Bin Laden gets tapped in the head by a Navy SEAL in a super-hush-hush special op and his corpse is dumped overboard in an undisclosed location after confirming the kill. Probably on the ocean floor next to Big Pussy, Jimmy Hoffa and the missing eighteen minutes of the Watergate tapes.

Big Al: Long topic already, but I don't get how a man known for changing his appearance, and having body doubles, can so certainly be identified just by looking at him? And what about DNA tests? You could test his son and get a Bin Laden match, right? I think burrying him at sea was a stupid idea and will bring out more questions than should be asked. Sort of like the Warren report and the 9/11 Commission. It made people go WTF? more than "okay it all makes sense now." Besides, has anyone not seen the cover ups and public relation campaigns they tried to do with Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch?

No, you wouldn't get a match. It also depends on what technique you use. If you have a ready made chip then it is either positive or negative. You would get a negative unless its OBL himself. If its a partial sequence or something you would get a partial match indicating they are directly related, but not an exact match. Thats the key here. Its going to be an exact match or damned close to it. There is very, very, little gray area for a false positive in this case.

Thank you for that link. Did you read the part where the video's authenticity is questioned? Specifically:

All references to current events, such as the 62nd anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Japan, and Sarkozy and Brown being the leaders of France and the UK, respectively, occur when the video is frozen.[12]

The words spoken when the video is in motion contain no references to contemporary events and could have been made before the US invasion of Iraq.

2011-05-02 02:38:59 PM

tulpen: Farker T: tulpen: I imagine this has been discussed somewhere, but I just don't understand the conspiracy theorists here. If he's not really dead, don't you think Osama will gleefully make this known? And don't you think that Obama knows that and thus ensured that he was definitely dead before putting the info out there? No entiendo, 'splain please.

I for one have little doubt that Osama is dead.

But the way that ObamaCo chose to handle this whole affair seems to have been designed to create doubt, controversy and division that will last for years.

Why would they do such a thing? Are they THAT stupid?

If so,do you want such idiots running your country?

Considering that it's been less than 24 hours since Osama's death was announced, don't you think it's baseless and premature to assume that Osama's death will "create doubt, controversy and division that will last for years". Can you comprehend that it's possible that additional evidence will be released in due time? I mean, there's talk of DNA testing, a US bullet to the head, photos, a burial, etc. already. The alternative would've been a scorched earth attack that destroyed the entire compound, which almost certainly would've resulted in nowhere near this much evidence of his death.

No, the alternative would have been to politely say "Fark Islamic customs - this is too important" and bring his body back to the US where it could be thoroughly and properly examined, allaying any suspicions.

Decent Muslims would understand, and idiot Muslims would have been just as pissed in any case.

If we are THAT worried about offending Muslim extremists, where did we find the courage to kill Osama in the first place?

If ObamaCo intended to create controversy, they found a sure-fire formula.

Boxingoutsider: barjockey: Here's a guy, Steve R. Pieczenik, who served under 4 administrations, top level security, member of the CFR - who basically implicates and incriminates the Bush administration in 9/11 - telling us BACK IN 2002 - that OBL is dead.

Take it as you will - just throwin' it out there...

"I mean, suddenly, we would see a video of bin Laden today and then out of nowhere, they said oh it was sent to us anonymously, meaning that someone in the government, our government, was trying to keep up the morale on our side and say oh we still have to chase this guy when, in fact, he's been dead for months."

"And then I said that somebody is orchestrating something here with the agreement of the bin Laden family, knowing fully well that he would die. And I think that Musharraf, the President of Pakistan, spelled the beans by accident three months ago when he said that bin Laden was dead because his kidney dialysis machines were destroyed in East Afghanistan. Well, he was one of few that knew that he had a kidney problem."

http://www.prisonplanet.com/jones_report_042402_pieczenik.html

"i'm not saying this is true, just throwing it out there" - The refrain of the moronic fool too scared to take an unpopular position.

Too bad I clearly outlined my position on the matter earlier. I was throwing something out there for discussion dimwit. I realize Alex Jones is not a reliable source - but the interview with Pieczenik was real - and his comments were from him - not Jones. Pieczenik is a real dude, trusted enough to serve in 4 administrations; and be a member of the CFR, among other things.

To insinuate "fear" in a Fark post, is astounding. I've been here since 2003 - anything slightly right of the Communist Manifesto is an unpopular position on Fark. If it weren't for unpopular positions, I'd never have anything to say. No grasshopper, I am not "scared" to post an opinion on Fark.

Huh? I never said anything about bending over backwards for "Muslim extremists" in my response. I simply pointed out that it's idiotically premature to conclude that the evidence of his death that was procured before his burial is insufficient. Since you have some reading comp issues, the "scorched earth" alternative I suggested relates to the method of killing him, not the method of burying him.

Okay then... Look, all I'm saying is, when you look, there's no real evidence the guy has been alive these past few years. It doesn't mean it's a conspiracy by the US, probably more that Al Quaeda was still using him as a figurehead.

It's also possible the US has known this for a while and decided to call them on it.

Still, please don't tell me a freeze frame video is evidence that a guy is alive. At least concede that point.

2011-05-02 02:48:59 PM
Well, if this is all true, then I still say the Pakistanis have some 'splainin' to do.

According to the reports, this compound/mansion is located within the Abbottabad Cantonment.

Cantonments in Pakistan are permanent military garrison areas, which are administered by Cantonment Boards under the control of the Military Lands & Cantonments Department (MLCD), Ministry of Defence, Government of Pakistan. Cantonments are established under and governed by the Cantonments Act, 1924. (new window)

So, here is this big compound with high walls with razor wire and closed-circuit security cameras within sight of the Pakistani equivalent of West Point, inside a cantonment administered by the Pakistani Ministry of Defence, and no one in the Pakistani government had any idea who was in there, and never even bothered to ask?

I don't believe it.

If so, that leaves only two possibilities: Gross incompetence and/or deliberately sheltering AQ members.

no. Interest has nothing to do with it. I don't even know where you get that. Fronts are created all the time to steer (for or against something) public opinion. This situation will be no different.

but it is apples to oranges.
Thousands of people witnessing an event is completely different than a handful of people unified under one cause.
