Nina Haagen Dazs: it could suck worse, but it's been such a gradual loss since i was a kid, i've spent most of my life adjusting to silence and solitude. what sucks the most is that i've started talking kinda funny so i tend to keep my world pretty small...just my kids and a couple friends....it's easier that way, and very peaceful.

That...

I'm sorry.

So....what constitutes legally deaf? I only wonder because I have about an 80 db loss in each ear. I never learned to sign because there isn't anybody to sign with.

well, thank you. having a hearing impairment is a part of who i've always been and i am for the most part pretty happy with myself. i'm very good at reading lips and body language which i feel, tend to give me a bit of an edge. sometimes. on the other hand, there are very few people who have the patience to repeat themselves more than once, so yea, that's why i keep my circle of friends so small. the ones who can tolerate me as i am are keepers.

So you're saying their only option is to BE thieves?

I've run a couple of machine shops over the years, as a foreman. I have hired a few guys wit the tats, the attitude, the stupid yellow shoelaces etc. Guys that would have their 'banger buddies show up in the parking lot and wanna hang out and chitchat. Every single one was fired within 2 months for swiping tools or toilet paper or inspection equipment. Every single one had an attitude from day one, wouldn't take direction, and wouldn't back down for anything, even petty crap that they should just say "yessir" about and farking do.

Never again.

Fresh out of the can with SS lightning bolts or a pair of boots on your neck? Walk away, we don't want you. Go be a garbage man or hire on a fishing boat. Same with number 13s, big M's on the chest, tats of Jesus, spiderwebs, and the ever present teardrop(s) on the outside corner of the eye. We see a gangster type come in, he's hustled out as fast as we can make him. They are never considered. And I've had some pretty rough dudes that did make it, and learned how to do the job without acting like "dey gonna go get dey nine and cap da whole fuggin place" because I told them to keep their work area clean.

The kid in Oakland I referred to above, was only something like 12 or 13 years old. Those psychos literally shot him to pieces in broad daylight right on the sidewalk. Gangsters are scum, and should be permanently segregated from civilization.

Guess who's the newest inductee on my Favorites list?

My experiences have been like this: I Know that I watch people's lips when we are talking one-on-one, as I've been informed of this. In certain situations I try to stop this and make eye contact as is more appropriate. I can gleam a little from their lips, I can gleam a lot more from their mannerisms and the tone of their voice, even if I can't hear the words. I can weasel my way through whole conversations relying on visual clues instead of words. WRT lip reading, I liken it to Calculus, or one of the advanced legs of physics. You get it or you don't. Until it "clicks" all you are doing is studying and not understanding. Sometimes no amount of scholarly effort will result in it clicking with you. Anyways, these are my experiences and thoughts.

I live a quiet, odd, and isolated life. when I'm at work I hide myself, when I'm at home I'm happier. I live alone in a house.

I have to say, I have been really really inspired by this post, and your general attitude, and it makes me realize how lucky and grateful I should be every day.

For us Jews, we are currently living in the period called 'Omer'. This is a semi-period of mourning, so we will not listen to music. It's been 12 days (we just entered the 13th day) and a couple of hours ago, while walking to synagogue, I was lamenting to myself the fact that I really really missed listening to music (I seriously spend hours every day with my iPod).

Instead of whinging because I have to go another 20 days without music, I should be ever so grateful that I have perfectly functioning hears and that, not only can I listen to music, but I can listen to people and everything around me.

Thank you for that, and keep up the happy countenance. You might keep to yourself in your personal life, but you have really touched one person over the internet, and I'll try to carry that with myself.

Trying to read lips while also hearing the worlds is kinda difficult.

It's like trying to follow a foreign language in a film while also reading the subtitles. You'll pick a few words of the foreign language up, but for the most part your brain is focused on the words you already know and the concepts behind them.

Someone who is deaf is able to focus purely on the movement of the lips because there is no verbal ques what so ever for the brain to analyze.

There is a strongish movement to comunicate with babies via sign language as a first language, Ms. Sno and I were all over it at the time and with pretty good results I think. It's just really basic communication, and usually vocalised too from our end, but way before she could speak, babysno was communicating via sign.

reading lips can be great fun when you're with people who know you well, so when you screw up it can be funny as all hell. not so funny when you screw up in a job interview...
i once admitted to a bar full of people that i was gay. i'm not gay, i just didn't catch the moment that the subject changed. wasn't all that funny at the time, but i knew one day it would be.

Deathfrogg: This has happened a few times. There was this poor dumb kid in Oakland back in 88 or 89 that was gunned down with AKs because he was walking down the street, signing to his little sister who was deaf. 'Bangers just walked up to him and shot him something like 60 times, emptying 2 whole clips into him right in front of his 10 year old sister. Was a big stinky deal in the papers back then.

Gangbangers make me sick. They're too stupid to work, and nobody wants to employ them anyway cause they're all thieves.

Hobbies, like cycling (and long-distance running) ;) I LOVE long solitary rides out into the god knows where I am. Besides knowing people that can't be alone, I know a number of people that also can't stand silence. It makes them incredibly uncomfortable to be in a room with me, and there being no conversation or other stimulus. All my close friends however (2-3), can stand the quiet and the calm, sometimes there's nothing to say. (Anecdotal personal observations have drawn a correlation between intelligence and comfort with silence).

I don't know how much of my comfort with solitude is environmental and a coping mechanism from the hellish primary and secondary education experiences I had in ultra-pretentious and divisive South Orange County schools, or a natural personality trait. I believe the former to have a stronger influence because I am about as extroverted as people come.

In fact, my schedule is set up to force 3-4 hours of solitude upon me via my commute, it's great.

Not relevant, but I just gotta tell someone. Yesterday I did my first climbs of the season, up until then I'd only been riding flats so far in 2011. I road up king's mountain (2k' in 32 min) down 35, down 92 to half moon bay, PHC south, up Tunitas Creek (2k', 55 min) and back home. 48 miles, 3:10, 4500 ft climbing. I'm dead today, but ever so happy. At one point I covered 10 miles in 18 minutes, and was going down 92 at 50. Soooo good!

Not exactly purely white, but I've been known to throw gang signs once in a while, and c walk after lots and lots of vodka.

Purely because, well, I look and I'm dressed like an 18th century Rabbi from the shtetl, and I sometimes have problems repressing that hispter post-ironic attitude inside of me. Also, it's pretty funny.

I'm still self-aware enough not to do that in places where it's likely to get me stabbed.

I'll expand upon what I mean. When I get to work, first thing I do is shower (obviously) Next I sneak up to the third floor with my bike, and I try to get into my office without anyone noticing. I prefer working without any lights on, my monitors provide more than enough light. I hang my bike on the wall behind me, and usually spend half the day with my legs on my chair (for comfort) and the door (all the doors in our office are sliding glass) closed. Unless you know I'm there its very easy to pass by and assume its unoccupied. When someone does come in, I turn off my music and put my hearing aids in, if i care what the person is saying i'll even turn them on. I can effectively go to work, be there 6 hours and leave and no-one will know I was there but Xavier, my buddy next door.

Uchiha_Cycliste: What do you mean the film-maker in you? Can you elaborate ol buddy?

Before I became religious, I was going to be a movie director. Even had a possible film deal (heck even another thrown at me not too long ago) but I left all that behind for my life immersed in Torah instead.

Still I can't help but have parts of that repressed past come up once in a while, either in the form of dialogue or (it's hard to explain) 'seeing' the cinematics in certain situations, or just plain imagining them.

Uchiha_Cycliste: I'll expand upon what I mean. When I get to work, first thing I do is shower (obviously) Next I sneak up to the third floor with my bike, and I try to get into my office without anyone noticing. I prefer working without any lights on, my monitors provide more than enough light. I can effectively go to work, be there 6 hours and leave and no-one will know I was there but Xavier, my buddy next door.

I can also relate to this in a way. When I come to work, I use a side door instead of the main building door. I negotiated my hours and my office, so I am basically cut off from all other employees except the receptionist (can't exactly sneak around her), occasionally my boss (who is a good friend of mine) and another employee (a religious Jewish woman). I use a different door, I'm far and away from them and usually just staring at my screen so it's not like I talk and communicate with them. I set up my lunch hour much later after them, and I spend my time in our building's synagogue (The two bosses are religious, half of our staff are Jewish, three quarter of that staff are religious, we pray every day together during the afternoon break) studying.

Then again one of the reasons why I cut off myself from the rest of the staff on my level is not because I'm anti-social, but mostly because they are non-Jewish women in their 20s and don't exactly dress modestly. It's not like I have a lot to discuss with them to begin with, and I'd rather not look at them either

I have to say I am surprised at how many women still get tramp stamps even though well, they are called tramp stamps.

Uchiha_Cycliste: Oh on a side note growing up in hell, I found and still find solace in Jesus, just not Christians.

Uh, somehow I always thought you were Jewish. Maybe it's the name + jewfro

/It's actually not that complex, but you have to not be a moron. Better luck next time.

No, my comment was directed first at the post I commented and then my personal experience.

/No though seriously, that's horrible :(

So....what constitutes legally deaf? I only wonder because I have about an 80 db loss in each ear. I never learned to sign because there isn't anybody to sign with.

sucks don't it =(

it could suck worse, but it's been such a gradual loss since i was a kid, i've spent most of my life adjusting to silence and solitude. what sucks the most is that i've started talking kinda funny so i tend to keep my world pretty small...just my kids and a couple friends....it's easier that way, and very peaceful.

You just completely described how I live, less the kids. Guess it comes with the territory.

what i like about this is that i've learned to appreciate solitude. most of my interest and hobbies are best done alone. i know so many people who just can't handle being alone even for a day or two and i'm baffled by that.

Soooo good!

i know that hearing impairment is a handicap, but it really doesn't have to be. certainly it affects how (and if) you interact with people, but there are too many ways to find fulfillment in life as you just proved with your post.
as far as silence goes, i think i've become addicted to it. i go days, sometimes a week or more, with nothing on here at home. nothing. the only time i like music now is when i drink a few too many and stuff the earbuds in and crank it up. i enjoy that as much as i used to enjoy sitting in a bar when i was a bit younger. we adjust as we go.
and congrats on the ride. :)

That's funny, I don't remember the part that says "regardless of skin color" - in fact, I could have SWORN he mentioned race specifically.

Nina Haagen Dazs

I lost my hearing to a fever when I was two, fever got around 106-107 and just fried my nerves and brain. the only reason that I can talk well is that I had JUST begun to pick up speech. My hearing got worse for the next 25 years. In fact my most recent audiogram from two months ago was the first time I've ever seen no further degradation in my loss (which is now hovering at just a bit over 65db Loss.

I want to put these losses in perspective for everyone else, and further express my sympathies for Nina, who has to do through so much more than I do. Decibels work on a 20log10 system (relative to a references signal). this means that every increment of 20 decibels is a power of ten.
For my 65 decibels is 20+20+20+5, or 10*10*10*3 or about 3000.
Nina's is 80 db or 20+20+20+20 or 10*10*10*10 or abour 10000.
Since sound is proportional to the square of the distance (twice as far away, 1/4 as loud. If I am one foot away from a speaker, and that's speakers volume is at threshold levels for me (closer than 1' I can hear farther than one foot I can't). Tat's has to be 54.7 feet away from the speaker to hear the same thing/things I do at one foot.
Further, for only 15db more, Tats has gotta stand 100! feet away from a speaker to hear the same thing that Nina hears at 1 foot. Crazy huh? Her loss is twice as bad as mine, for only 65 db to 80 db.

Yay math!

Tatsuma: Uchiha_Cycliste: What do you mean the film-maker in you? Can you elaborate ol buddy?

Before I became religious, I was going to be a movie director. Even had a possible film deal (heck even another thrown at me not too long ago) but I left all that behind for my life immersed in Torah instead.

Still I can't help but have parts of that repressed past come up once in a while, either in the form of dialogue or (it's hard to explain) 'seeing' the cinematics in certain situations, or just plain imagining them.

Neat! I'm a part time actor, if you can DL Season two episode 9 I'm the lead actor

Got To Lock And Load
Air Date: 12/21
In 1997 members of the Republic of Texas separatist group took Joe Rowe and his wife hostage. The Texas Rangers were able to negotiate their release, and capture four separatists, however two members, Richard Keyes and Mike Matson got away. Fleeing into the mountainous hills of Davis, Texas they spent two days evading helicopters and police dogs, eventually Matson pulls his pistol, preferring to go out in standoff. Keyes keeps running. Using an underground Militia group, Keyes is able to hideout in the woods undetected, until a tail leads the FBI to his hideout, and his capture.

Here's a link to a preview

EIP for a torrent tracker.

Me and JC are tight. I have a policy if never turning away anyone that comes to me asking for help, often at cost to me.
I've had someone living with me recently (completely rent free) because he needs it. when I met him he was sleeping in the back of his dad's volvo. He had quite a shiatty youth and never really had an opportunity to succeed. So he's staying with me contingent on him pursuing the college he needs to complete the certificates and hours he needs to be a professional masseuse. While he's been here I've been teaching him about math, science and the art of manipulation. He's learned a great deal since he's been here. I can't wait till he leaves, but he needs this, so here he is.
With regards to the jew fro everyone in my family, every.single.person has stick straight hair. No one understands the fro, but I look far too much like my grandfather, and father as babies to not be related. We think I stuck my tongue in a socket with I was 6 and that did it.

Apparently Hispanics dominate the gang scene. Though Blacks aren't far behind.
