Well, when people refuse to consider tax increases, this is the only option when you've already cut to the bone. We're already at the bone across the country.

lajimi: 5th and Melrose run parallel.

Actually, at the intersection of Melrose and Vine, it's Vine north of Melrose, and Rossmore south of Melrose. But right there in the middle of the intersection, it's neither. That no-man's-land is actually 5th. Really. I swear! They don't bother marking it, because... um.... hey look, a shiny thing!

Orrrrr, also at that intersection is Bogie's Liquor, Hollywood institution and the place where many, many, many people have bought a fifth. That could be it too.

If the Lakers win the Championship again this year, the firefighters may just let the fires set by the looters burn L.A. to the ground.

OMG! In just the last 12 years 33 hospitals have been forced to close in LA County from non-payment being made for services given to people using them as clinics for runny noses to broken fingers who have no I.D. AND who give fake SS#. CBS did a special on how people are dying because of this with heart attacks and such as the ambulance has to go 10 to 20 minutes farther to get to a hospital which is the difference between life and death...NOW they need to cut the ambulances . We have way to many people with their hand out who have no business being here in the first place... pretty dare sad when we can't even take care of our OWN CITIZENS.

Ehh

Good lord, the comments on the LAT site are so depressing. Lazy-ass firefighters and union thugs taking taxpayer money! Shut 'em down!

I find myself thinking that Los Angeles, California, and the United States deserve to fail.

How about considering stopping the local Government from allowing LA to be a sanctuary City. All I hear is how the undocumented put more money into the coffers in taxes than they take out and use...lies proven over and over again.

Funny how the only places having big major cuts are high undocumented areas, everyone else is having to tighten their belts and make "some" cuts but nothing like this.

I used to live on Irolo St which is what Normandie becomes just south of Wilshire. Normandie, for some reason moves a block east south of 7th.

I have lived in L.A. for almost all 37 years of my life, and pride myself on knowing streets like the back of my hand here. I discovered the above driving to a meeting about 6 weeks ago and it really spun me out.

Subby fails not because of lack of knowledge about Los Angeles geography, but because of lack of knowledge that one-upping people on their knowledge of the city is the third* most popular pastime here.

*Behind "sitting in traffic" and "pretending we're living in paradise**", and just ahead of "looking down on fly-over staters".

**A smoggy, broke-ass, high cost of living, overpopulated paradise

From wikipedia:

Chile

In Chile, firefighters are called "Bomberos". They are volunteers. They also must finance the acquisition, maintenance and operation of their buildings and equipment (including firetrucks) rather than rely upon government allocations. All the officers are democratically elected by the volunteers. The government does not finance specialization courses for firefighters. Instead, they have to pay for it on their own. 'Bomberos' is the name given for the firefighters in most Spanish speaking countries.

Founded in 1851, Valparaíso's Fire Department is the oldest. Following are the Santiago Fire Department established in 1863 and Viña del Mar Fire Department in 1884. Now all cities have a Fire Department each of which has its own officers and companies.

Many of the companies were founded by resident members of European colonies such as the Germans, British, Spanish, French and Italians.

There's no point in trying to understand or even memorize LA's farked up street plan. I just keep a GPS on my phone for all of the staggered road jumps in unfamiliar areas.

You know, painting any argument against the overtime and automatic pay-grade-for-training-class abuses as being nothing more than "Lazy-ass firefighters and union thugs taking taxpayer money" really says a lot more about your own biases. Sure, there are a couple of the sort, this is the internet after all, but there are other more reasonable comments rationally discussing real fiscal problems and realistic solutions, given that the union has turned layoffs into such a third rail. Bone up on the situation before castigating everyone living in it.

I would advise you not to move to Los Angeles, then. It seems to really piss you off.
