I_Hate_Iowa: Environmental NIMBY group wants wind turbines banned. That's blows obvious

THIS.

Libertyville is an affluent northern suburb of Chicago in Lake County, Illinois, United States.

Sounds so environmental.

Environmental group wants wind turbines all forms of energy creation banned. That blows.

That's more like it.

Right, because a shadow is so much more offensive than a cloud of coal dust. Morons.

Hold on, I am still looking for the "Environmental" part in that story.

2011-04-23 09:41:04 PM
NIMBY? Well, it seems to really be in their BY. I thought wind farms were supposed to go in out-of-the-way windy places.

Also, FTFA it sounds like the guy is against gay parties in the neighborhood: "You have this `whoop, whoop, whoop' sound over your house."

2011-04-23 09:42:30 PM
How is this an enviromentalist group?

FTA
"They should not be obtrusive, 45 is the sound of a quiet car running next to your house," Gates said."

Meanwhile people live next to trains and near airports. These people have no idea what it means to live in reality.

"Dave Gates, a member of Citizens for the Protection of Libertyville" might be a lot of things, but from the various google searches... environmentalist would not be one of them.

More likely HOA Storm Trooper.

There are two kinds of people commonly referred to as "environmentalists". The first is someone who studies the issues and objectively weighs the various options with the good of the community in mind. The second is someone who fears and lobbies against any sort of change, masquerading under the banner of environmentalism, no matter what it is or how flimsy the rationale for opposing it.

Fine. Shut down the wind turbine and then rip out all the power lines to the area.

Porous Horace: NIMBY? Well, it seems to really be in their BY. I thought wind farms were supposed to go in out-of-the-way windy places.

Yeah, this is literally next door to these people. And 45 dB doesn't seem that loud until you have to listen to it constantly. I've read some goofy NIMBY accounts complaining about the noise from miles away, but I think they've got a legitimate complaint here.

The thought occurs to me that we could now track everyone's car and charge them use taxes based on their mileage travelled. Thus buttholes like this who live in the sticks would end up paying enormous taxes for wasting gasoline and other energy supplies.

What a wonderful world.

2011-04-23 09:51:00 PM
Thats ok, we'll just stick a coal-fired plant in their 'hood and see if they like that better. Or perhaps a Nuke plant down the street?

2011-04-23 09:51:47 PM
Do these people even know how the decibel system works (pops)?
35dB is barely louder than a whisper. A normally quiet room without people is around that. Put a computer, or refrigerator in the room, that ups it over 40. Not to mention how loud people turn their TV's and crapPods to. (70-90dB)
The sound of the wind going by that would turn the turbine would be louder than 40dB. So to ask that something be 35dB that operates in an environment that is louder than that is absurd.

I guarantee you there isn't a 15 mile evacuation zone around this thing.

"Basically, they would have to show that there wouldn't be a shadow on a neighboring property unless you are able to come to an agreement with a property owner that would have to be filed with the Lake County Recorder's office," Spoden said.

several residents who live between 200 and 700 feet from Aldridge's 150-foot-tall wind turbine

How the hell did such a thing get plopped in the midst of 'several' residents in the first place?

These things belong in the sticks, next to freeways that have semis roaring by all day. Seven hundred feet isnt as much as it sounds like.

2011-04-23 10:00:14 PM
Grassroots does not equal environmental.

However, numerous environmental groups I know of have asked for further research on wind turbines because they are in the midst of bird migration routes, and birds will fly into them. Also, the spinning of the turbines cause pressure differences which cause problems for bats. As the rapid pressure changes occur due to the turbines, the bats lungs explode as they get near.

2011-04-23 10:02:50 PM
Ahh yes the loony fringe who want their lives to be exactly like the 1950's idealized image of suburbia.

Doesn't exist, folks, someone's always doing something that messes up the ideal.

Personally, I'd be happy to have a turbine on my property, and what's more I'm actually setting up an anemometer to see if it would be worth investing in a rooftop turbine to supplement grid power.

Build nukes, or build coal plants or turbines. You cannot run a modern economy on bunny farts (methane) yet.

We have the same problem here, but we're split between those who think and agree that wind turbines off the shoreline are part of the solution, and those who want to see a pretty view but don't think.

While I'm not a total believer in us warming the planet, I do believe we need to start getting off fossil fuels this year as part of a 50 year plan to be totally off of them ... as in 51 years we run out.

2011-04-23 10:04:26 PM
So the wind turbines...
1.) can't be louder than 45 decibels - OK, the average home has 50 decibels of ambient sound. Everyone STFU, Mr. NIMBY needs peace and quiet!
2.) can't cast a shadow on a neighboring property - um, WTF? At sunrise, my house casts a shadow across the street onto someone else's yard. Too farking bad.
3.) couldn't be any taller than the maximum height in that district (5 feet taller than a 1-story house, apparently) - so no two-story houses are allowed in the district?
4.) can't make sun glints - Hey dumbass... the sun is glinting off your windows, so please replace them with nonreflective glass or paint them matte black. Thanks.
5.) cannot have any lighting - Whoops, sorry about hitting it with that medevac copter last night. Maybe you should put some kind of signal on it that's visible at night.
6.) or advertising - I agree with this one, and they don't have advertising.
7.) cannot create electromagnetic interference - well, a wind turbine doesn't affect digital or satellite TV, FM radio is only affected within about 100 feet of the turbine, and it doesn't affect cell phones. Anything else, STFU and deal with it.
8.) can't be operated between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. - so about 40% of the capacity is wasted sitting idle.

"That does not satisfy Gates."

Somehow, I expected it wouldn't.

No. I don't suppose anything would 'satisfy' Gates. Except maybe a punch in the crotch. Somehow I think that might be his desire. Or need.

I_Hate_Iowa: Environmental NIMBY group wants wind turbines banned. That's blows obvious

To be fair, the actual article's headline just says "group". So it's not the article being retarded, it's just subby, which is basically automatically assumed anyhow. The kinds of people that flit around the internet looking for stuff to post on a "silly news" aggregater (sp?) do not tend to be the kind of people you'd find breaking 100 on your IQ tests.

2011-04-23 10:32:12 PM
But I can build the nuclear reactor (vessel type) in my basement to power the home, that's OK right? None of those annoying shadow flickers

It's libertyville. That's all that needs to be said. It's pure NIMBY, no environmentalism.
