Scott Woodham said he understands the price of metal is up, but can't see going to such lengths to obtain something of value.

The steel used in railroad tracks is some of the highest-grade steel made. I can see the attraction for metal thieves, if they have the time, equipment, and manpower that would be needed.

I know a guy who makes furniture, real high end stuff. He will spend up to 300 dollars for a plane blade made from japanese battleship anchor chain steel, WWII vintage. I imagine rail steel is probably up there in the same level of quality. And I don't think they're making a whole lot of the stuff anymore. When was the last time any new railroad tracks were put down, anywhere, really?

So some people are upset that someone took abandoned, unused railroad tracks that where partialy buried and in no condition for use?

Well, that's probably stealing (from who?) or something, and I guess what they did is wrong in a sense...but I don't have that much of a problem with this. If I was a LEO, I wouldn't bother investigating this unless someone walked in to the station and said "Hey, it was me". There are probably more important crimes going on that need attention.

Not in my backyard. Go ahead and put nuclear power plants or jails or whatever else but you're going to need some divine intervention if you move Detroit in my backyard.

Hell, if you have the balls to go around digging around a former ordinance plant you can have the steel. They're lucky they didn't dig up a mortar round instead.

Railroads have to get federal permission to abandon track. Just because it wasn't in use and would have to be refurbished is irrelevant.

A commuter rail line requires a huge EIS to match the huge cost. The proposed line from Boston to Fall River and New Bedford will cost about $2 billion. I think the EIS is around 1,000 pages long.

I have several friends who work full time year round for Union Pacific repairing rails. Tie replacement and rail replacement goes on constantly somewhere.

The rails remain the property and responsibility of the servicing railroad company. They are not the "property" of anybody who owns the land. The responsible railroad must maintain the right-of-way or remove the rails.

The 150,000 route-miles (many times that number in terms of track-miles, and even more of rail-miles) of track in the United States needs maintenance, you know.

I don't have the exact numbers, but I'd be willing to bet that thousands of miles of new rail are rolled and laid each year.

(Just to be clear: one mile of double track = one route-mile = two track-miles = four rail-miles)

granted, there is maintenance work done on existing rails, but I wasn't too clear. I was thinking more along the lines of new rails being put down where none existed previously. Unlike roads and highways, which new ones are continuously being laid down, I am somewhat doubtful new rail road tracks are being put down at any significant pace of expansion. I also would be willing to bet that an unused railroad spur deteriorates at a significantly slower rate than an unused asphalt road.

around here, they've started stealing optical fiber phone lines...just dig it up and cut it with a chainsaw.
word is the techno people pay top dollar so there's very little risk getting turned in by the scrapyard people.

That's somewhat of a joke.
There are no people buying used optical telecom fiber.
These idiots are destroying operational fiber while digging up (and/or cutting down) wires trying to steal copper. One can only imagine their expectations and then the result when they find out there's no copper in all that wire...after spending considerable effort to steal it.

It's ok. I myself have only recently become aware of my extremely twisted sense of humor.
And the actions of these poor sods stealing worthless plastic in hopes of making a few quid on a rapidly escalating metals future market is well...funny.
Especially when the jobs done and over with.
Can you imagine?
Spending all night out there in the weeds, constantly on the lookout for the cops, braving the elements, just to steal plastic?
What's more amazing is that there aren't a few homicides to go along with the crime. Well, after the crime anyway.
There almost has to be alcohol involved.
