Toledo, OH - Don't bother. Keep driving until you find a city that has something other than f'ing chain restaurants.

Ever hear of Inky's? Corner of Sylbvania and Detroit, I believe. Best. damn. pizza. evar.

And Myle's is good too... Always make a stop when in BG.

2003-08-08 02:03:04 PM
Forsythe P. Jones - WESTSHORE ALL THE WAY (seriously, we must be neighbors as I just saw your profile with the mention of Hooter's on Gandy)

and for someone who mentioned Gumby's in Tampa - it rocks as well, but they do not have spinach as a topping, so they don't get my vote!

ATL:
Savage Pizza in L5P - (Cajun or Mexican pizza is great)
Everybodys in Highlands or Dectaur (toppings!!!)
Grant Central in Grant Park / East Atlanta - only because I can walk to it.

Mellow Mushroom is okay, I worked at the Athens one while in college so it's lost it's originality for me. Fun job though.

Orange County California, Mission Viejo.

Franco's Pizzeria in the kalediscope. Franco is a Italian born genius with pizza. Makes all types, even Chicago style if thats your wish but his speciality is the Pizza Bianca

Thin Crust White pizza with Ricotta, Mozzeralla, Garlic, Spinach, Olive Oil, and Roma Tomatoes. Dunk it in Ranch and its HEAVEN!

Also he makes it New York Style so the Extra Large is HUGE!

Deweys is from Cincinnati, but is looking to expand. Seems they are starting up in St. Louis

Heheh. Its an international pizza restaurant industry website.

In Atlanta Grant Central is it and that's not saying much. It's a shame.

Unfreakable:

Don't know where you are, but in Grand Junction, there's a place on North Avenue, across the street from Mesa State University called D'Orrio's. It's a little hole-in-the-wall, but they have outstanding Sicilian style pizza.

I second the endorsement for Old Chicago, especially if you're a beer lover (110 beers!). In Grand Junction, it's on North Avenue just east of where Business Route 70, US 6 and US 50 join/split. There are several others scattered throughout the state, however. Check their website for locations.

Cheers!

BTW, all you Chicago and Buffalo types must be on crack. Mighty Taco was to me in college what MREs are to soldiers in the field. Bocce Club's stuff is 90% half-thawed dough. I don't know what the hell that Chicago "pizza" is, but I'm convinced it's baked Silly Putty. Pizza should be portable and somewhat less than 500 grams of fat per serving. Come to NYC, and we'll go to Five Roses and Burritoville.

You are correct, sir! The Big Country is my favorite pizza at Hideaway, but the Paradise Pie runs a close second.

"didn't realize how much pizza I'd been ordering until I called one evening and I was greeted by name and the guy asked about my cat!"

When he asked about your pussy, he was not, perhaps, expressing concern for your cat.

Just a thought.

I know that saying this will make me "uncool", but I think Pizza Hut is the best. I like no food better than a Meat Lovers Pizza Hut pizza and a nice cold glass of coke. Very tasty.

Ray's, of course.

The original one.

loki see loki do: AFAIK, Dewey's is a chain, but only in the "Greater Cincinnati Metro Area" (Newport, Harpers Point, etc.). I don't believe they have locations elsewhere.

I'll throw out a bonus few:

Best Regional Chain Mr. Gatti's, a mostly southern chain. I remember this from my youth--my mom would take my sisters and me after the last day of school for the all-you-can-eat buffet. When travelling in Kentucky recently, right around that time of year, we saw one on the side of the road. I insisted my wife and I eat there. Still tasted like I remember.
Best, Lake Charles, Louisiana Tony's, hand's down. Many will disagree, but I can't think of how it can consistently be so good.

2003-08-08 02:11:09 PM
Other good Pizza places:

The Dumforgot (sp?), Highlands, NC. Video rental place with unbelievable pizza. You could watch a movie while you eat. Unfortunately, I believe it closed.

Paesano's, Seneca, SC. My favorite Italian Restaurant. Haven't had anything bad there.

Mellow Mushroom, Clemson, SC. It can be expensive, and the wait can be too long for some, but it is DAMN good pizza. Best when school is not in session.

Zacharys in the Bay Area sucks, it is all about Pizza Orgasmica on Fillmore. "We never fake it"

The editors who made the selections for New York City need to get a map, a MetroCard, and a passport if it makes 'em feel better, and go to the Bronx or Queens. I can't comprehend how they could make a "best pizza in NYC" list and not ONE of the pizzerias listed were from those 2 boroughs. /vent

Second, the Atlanta list had Fritti at the top. Fritti is not a pizzeria. It's nouvelle-cuisine yuppie crap. Thankfully, they did have the foresight to put Camelli's on the list - I used to live directly above the place, and it's the best pizza south of the Mason-Dixon line, if you ask me.

Why even have this thread? The best in the USA has to be in NYC. It just has to.

2003-08-08 02:13:16 PM
There's a little place in Boston's North End called Giorgio's. I'm pretty sure it's run by the mob, but that doesn't prevent them from making a killer tomato and garlic pizza that will knock your socks off.

Incidentally, I live in Seattle and all pizza here is weak.

You, sir, are the single most retarded individual I've ever come across on this earth. You are unworthy of any opinion, as you were clearly born lacking taste buds and with a brain the size of a walnut. It is illegal to mock the glory of Bocce's Club.

In Manhattan KS there was a place called Lucky's Brewgrille that made wood-fire-oven pizza. Sigh.

newmoonpuppyhead, please understand: just 'cause New York does something, doesn't make it the best. It's not the center of the universe, not even the "Greatest City in the World."

Besides, I've had NYC pizza--I'll stick with Dewey's or Tony's!

Alfredo's Pizza Villa, Chapel Hill, NC. - Awesome authentic Italian pizza and foods. (formerly "Mio's")

If I'm not mistaken the first pizza place opened in NYC and I believe it's still open. So a question for you New York Farkers, is it any good?

2003-08-08 02:19:33 PM
Two boots is cool if you're into the weird topping set, and the white slices are great. I think the fact that most of their slices end up getting reheated makes them a bit crispier than some other joints. Grimaldi's is great, nothing beats the location, though I hate the thing bag they give you for carry out orders.

someone already said it.. but Lorenzo's on South Street in Philly!

2003-08-08 02:21:26 PM
There's also good pizza in Brooklyn. Original's in Canarsie and Sheepshead Bay, for instance. Also, Bay Ridge r0xx0r for pizza.

Bocce's, however, is an abomination unto us. As chastisement, we shall take all the tax money from Western New York and use it to fill potholes on the Williamsburg Bridge.

If you have access to a time machine, I would say the best pizza is from Godfather's, circa 1974. No later than 1977 anyway. Pre-corporate recipe, of course.

(not to be confused with that abomination they serve now)

Sqee

2nnin Now my homeland of Texas may not make the greatest pizza in the world but we make up for it in other areas. Best BBQ in the US and what people mistakenly called mexican food (it's real name is Tex-mex) was invented here in Texas.

You Texas boys wish, what with all your poor-grade meat like brisket and the meat from Texas cattle which is the equivalent of bad beef jerky, being raised out in that dried up mesquite-and-caliche country.

I could really go for some white slice.... what? pizza? oh... never had the stuff. *laugh*

On the same thread, don't know if anyone else caught it a few months ago, but MSN linked to this same "story" on their homepage, and it had a picture of a little kid eating a piece of pizza with the headline: "Find the tastiest slices & pies near you." and the same pic with the headline "Find the tastiest thin, thick or stuffed slices nearest you."

I about died. I couldn't hit "print screen" fast enough!

2003-08-08 12:29:52 PM Craphola

/NYC pizza is better than Chicago. Nyah!

Arguing about Chicago vs. New York pizza is like debating which is better - a 100 dollar bill, or two 50's. Both are pretty damn good.

The only hope the rest of the country has, though, is to get a pizza joint opened by someone from either Chicago or New York.

The minute something wacked out like broccoli lands on a pizza, it loses the right to be called pizza.

2003-08-08 02:25:49 PM
Boston--Santarpios..... Awesome friggin thin crust... hot pepper flakes in baby food jars on the old ass metal legged tables... Group of 6 came in and the waitress said "Over here, 6 Pack." The bill comes handwritten on a blank piece of white paper and it's cash ONLY.

2003-08-08 02:25:54 PM
You'll have to excuse Craphola. He's obviously gone mad from having to sleep with those fugly Buffalo women to keep from freezing to death in the Buffalo winters.

It's called a piehole because I put GOOD PIZZA IN IT, BABY!!!!

MrGuilt:

I used to work at a Gatti's in Louisiana. The main thing is, they use provolone cheese, instead of Mozzerella. The dry ingredients for the crust are premixed in a 40 pound sack, and mixed with water in the store, then proofed for 12 hours.

The sauce is made in store, though. Then there is a blend of Parmesan and herbage (I don't know what's in it) that they get premade in a box, and is sprinkled on every pizza. That's pretty key as well. And they get the pepperoni whole, and slice it in the store every day. Same for the cheese, and Canadian bacon.

Actually, quite a bit of work goes into their stuff.
