waitaminute...: call me crazy, but I actually like Pizza House better than Cottage Inn. Plus, they got bacon-n-cheddar fries.
/future heart attack

Also: New York style pizza reminds me of school cafeteria food = yucky.

Oh yeah, definately. I suppose LaRosa's being a Cincinnati-based chain had something do with it. Dewey's beats LaRosa's hands down. Not even close.

jgramlich Just a difference in local language I guess, but again, to me there is a difference between a calzone and a stuffed pizza. A stuffed pizza is round, big, and cut into slices, like a regular pizza. A calzone is smaller, not round, and usually served whole.

Stuffed pizza:

There's this place in the Dallas suburb of Plano that has great pizza. I forget the name as it been awhile since I've been there, the place is run by a family of immigrants. Funny thing is you think pizza you probably think Italian immigrants but they're actually Croatian.

Anyone in NY or Northern Jersey, Nyack, Torriello's or Tarantella's, Excellent pizza.

Actually, being new to Colorado, please somebody let me know the best pizza in the state. I'll drive more than 36 miles to get there if necessary.

I moved to CO from NY a few years ago and you will find that almost all of the pizza places here have "NY Style" in their name. In reality, very, very few come close. I've found 2 places that have come close:

1) Richie's pizza at Flatiron Crossing. Great pizza, and their sicilian is amazing

2) 'Lil Ricci's in Parker. More of a family style Italian restaurant...they make really great Chicken Parm sangwiches in there!

Someone else posted Beau Jo's, which is good, but beware..it's "Colorado Style" pizza, which is VERY different from NY Style.

/can't believe someone actually put Dominoes!!!

2003-08-08 01:16:37 PM
Craphola: Minnesota is almost as bad as California or Texas

I agree completely, nevertheless, my top pick is Red's Savoy. For me, a pizza place needs to be a total dive with great food.

1. I can't believe I had to scroll half-way down before someone mentioned New Haven. It has, hands down, the best pizza on earth.

2. Unfortunately, the misguided souls on Fark seem to think Pepe's is better than Sally's. NOTHING is better than Sally's. Period. Of course, they also seem to think they are across the street from eachother, as opposed to 2 blocks away on the same side of the street, so go figure. For those of you who don't know, the Sally's / Pepe's rivalry is similar to the Yankees / Red Sox rivalry. I wouldn't be caught dead in Pepe's, even though it's probably the second best pizza on earth. Modern is the forgotten step-child. Great Pizza, but filled with the people without the dedication to wait online at the the other two.

3. Grimaldi's is the best in New York.

4. Anyone who eats chicken on pizza (and lets not even talk about pineapple) should be shot.

5. Chicago "Pizza" isn't pizza. It's cake.

Sorry, but Lou Malnati's is and will always be the definitive Chicao Style Pizza, and not to mention, the best!

Omar_Sharif---

I assume there is more then one location of 'Lou's' I have only been to the one in Skokie/Evanston/some where on the north side. 3 times. First, highly disappointed cause it was so talked up. Second, figured it had to be an off day the first time. Nope. It really was that bad. Third, figured had to something to it cause I know so many people that just love it. Nope. Still really that bad.

I am sorry that I don't like it, must be something wrong with my taste buds?

Nope, you're right. Lou's is a grease pie. Good place to watch a game though.

Mmmm....pizza....

In my stupid, younger days, I went to a place in L.A. called Pizza Maven and ordered a pepperoni.

The place was kosher.

I was kicked out without my pizza.

I can't believe you people are saying Lou Malnati's is the definitive Chicago pizza. It's Geno's East!
Book it!

...And if anyone's in Chicago, send me a slice?

What the hell good is kosher pizza?

2003-08-08 01:20:43 PM
And nowhere in Florida. I think it's the water. Can't get descent fresh bread either.

In the Ft. Lauderdale area I know of several good NY-style places. There is a chain called "Big Louie's" (I think) that is pretty good.

Up north in the Coconut Creek area (about 10-15 mi north) there is "Lorenzo's" in a big shopping plaza at the intersection of Lyons Blvd and Coconut Creek Drive.

Back to Galveston for a moment... Is (or was) the slogan for Mario's Flying Pizza, "We speak little English, but we make the best pizza"?

2003-08-08 01:20:52 PM
Fuel Pizza in Charlotte, NC for authentic NY style. Cool place and killer staff.

Wolfman's Pizza (also Charlotte) for specialty pizzas.

They were pretty on for New York, except they forgot Five Roses...

This is Buuuuuulllllllllshiiiiiiit! How can any "best pizza in the US" list be complete without mentioning Arcaro's Pizza in Old Forge, PA! Freakin' blasphemy! Square, red or white tray for $7. Thats a little piece of heaven nestled into the armpit of America. Northeast PA Farkers, holla if ya hear me!

2003-08-08 01:21:36 PM
It's kind of hard to top Mellow Mushroom in Tuscaloosa and Auburn, AL. There, the pie is too fly and the beer flows like wine...

/bread makes me poop! Yay!!!

pseudodigm -
I have to agree with you there.
I don't really enjoy pizza too much, but Linguine's in Marlboro(ugh) is tasty.
It's also nice to have a place right down the road from work (HP).

2003-08-08 01:21:55 PM
2nnin Now my homeland of Texas may not make the greatest pizza in the world but we make up for it in other areas. Best BBQ in the US and what people mistakenly called mexican food (it's real name is Tex-mex) was invented here in Texas.

If you're in Denver and want a good NY pizza, try Proto's. It just opened at Platte and 15th (by the REI flagship store...on Platte). The best NY style pizza I've had, well, since I lived in NY.

2003-08-08 01:22:16 PM
Three Brothers' in the DC metro area is pretty good. I like their spinach and sausage calzone.

2003-08-08 01:22:18 PM
A follow up to my post, the place with Spinich and flowers pizza and good BBQ chicken pizzas is Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae. On the NW coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.

2003-08-08 01:22:35 PM
Anyone from Bridgeport, CT remember Famous Pizza? It was really greasy but you could get a large pizza (which was actually a size somewhere between small and medium at most normal places) for $3.75!!!! ($4.75 if you wanted pepperoni) Sure, you would be tasting it 3-4 days after eating it, but...what a bargain!

2003-08-08 01:22:36 PM
hey, jrupert...
I'm in West Springfield and have been searching for 3 years for a decent pie anywhere in New England. Where in Amherst is that place?

When Buds go Bad! Next on Springer.

Alice - I go to the Original one in Lincolnwood. But pizza is a very personal thing. As far as the sex/pizza thing, don't listen to me. I figure I'm an Ass man. Everyone always says "Hey, Your an Ass Man!

Squee

You couldn't be more correct. I love Tex-Mex and BBQ. I'm flying to Dallas on Tuesday for work. I'll make sure to eat my fill.
