I don't get it. Can someone explain?
2003-08-08 09:41:01 AM
There's nothing to get, it's not funny. Even to nerds it's not funny.
2003-08-08 10:04:55 AM
I think the funny thing is that the license cost is US$199 and it looks like he's sending them Canadian money.
2003-08-08 10:35:48 AM
He's a Perl programmer. We're not supposed to understand him. :)
2003-08-08 10:43:01 AM
Actually, to real nerds yes it is funny. You can break down the current SCO vs. the rest of the world as follows:

Darl Mcbride (CEO of SCO Group): We need a way to pump up our stock prices. I know, let's claim IBM stole our "intellectual property" that we bought from Novell years ago and sue them for <Dr. Evil>ONE BILLION DOLLARS</Dr. Evil>

IBM: <shrug> whatever.

Darl Mcbride: Okay, that's not flying all that well. Let's threaten everyone who uses Linux because, um, Linux has our intellectual property. Draft and send out 1500 threatening letters to Red Hat users and Red Hat themselves.

Linux users: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That's funny.

Darl Mcbride: Let's offer them a 'license' that will protect them from anything, ya know, happening to them for $699. It'd be a shame if they were, ya know, be sued or anything.

Linux users: Fark you and the horse you rode in on.

RedHat: We're counter-suing SCO for defamation and false claims.

Daryl Mcbride: LA LA LA LA, I can't hear you...

IBM: Okay, we've mulled this over for awhile and, um, you ain't got shiat. We're suing you for breach of 4 patents along with a host of other things. Prepare to have your company vaporized.

Open source people: YAY IBM!

And so on. Okay, maybe that wasn't the best representation I could come up with. Basically SCO is engaging in business-model-by-litigation in a pump and dump scheme with their stock. That ONE BILLION DOLLARS was not an exaggeration. They are attempting to extort money for their failed company by claiming there is infringing code in Linux but they won't show anyone. This whole thing caused their stock to increase by 600% (from $1.35 in January to a high of something like $13.50/share before Red Hat and IBM filed their counter suits.) Check Slashdot, they have lots of stuff on this.

/me scratches head...

Nope. Still don't care.

Maybe if'n it was done to RIAA, then it'd be funny.

This? Meh.
2003-08-08 10:51:30 AM
That's damn funny.

/me scratches head...

Nope. Still don't care.

And well you shouldn't. For those outside the Linux IT world it's a snoozer and a real non-issue. For those in the Linux IT world, it is mildly entertaining. For SCO day-traders, it will be a devastating catastrohpe when the hammer comes down and they haven't sold.
2003-08-08 12:38:59 PM
9 out of 10 programmers (surveyed here at work) don't think it's funny.
2003-08-08 12:50:37 PM
I think the broken image links are funny. They're always funny. I enjoy them. Thank you for the entertainment.

(Rolls twenty-sided die)

I...I just got killed by an elf.
2003-08-08 01:50:25 PM
would rather read about Arnold the guvernator, or even (ugh) the Bennifer
2003-08-08 04:12:12 PM
The other thing is that SCO probably wanted to get purchased by IBM for a wad of cash. Now they'll probably wind up as a part of IBM, but without the cash exchange.
2003-08-08 04:16:36 PM
Now, *funny* would be if SCO sent the following reply:

"For those outside the Linux IT world it's a snoozer and a real non-issue."

HEY, I ain't a Linux geek, but I care about this, especially since SCO will not reveal the offending code, rather get the payments first. I'm always hoping that the Linux community pulls together long enough to make a uniform distro and GUI.

Other than that, I love my Win 2000 box. No more BSOD to interrupt my pr0n downloads !

2003-08-08 04:18:04 PM
This also brings up another point: We should be able to purchase Monopoly money for stuff like this. I see fake money and coins in toy stores all the time, but never Parker Brothers' lucre that just screams "here's how much value I think your product or service has."
2003-08-08 04:18:49 PM

canadian money

/sorry Canada
2003-08-08 04:18:58 PM

Yeah, that wasn't really funny at all.
2003-08-08 04:20:48 PM
I don't get it. Can someone explain this to me in a manner which would leave me giving a shiat?
2003-08-08 04:21:24 PM
HA! :-)
2003-08-08 04:22:35 PM
I thought it was pretty funny. And, Weaps... that was some funny shiat too. Well done.

Damn the man! Fight the power! yadda, yadda, yadda....
2003-08-08 04:24:06 PM
Henchman: get your extra Monopoly money right here:
2003-08-08 04:24:18 PM
Even though I do not understand the page, I have to say that this is the dorkiest and nerdiest thing I have seen all day today (Friday) and pretty much the second or third nerdiest and dorkiest thing I have seen this week.

This guy needs a wedgie ASAP.
2003-08-08 04:25:12 PM
"Thought this was funny, please email me at: . I'd love to hear from everyone!"

Okay. You suck. Get a job you damn dirty hippy!
2003-08-08 04:25:18 PM
Weaps, that was brilliant. I besmunge you.
2003-08-08 04:26:34 PM
OK, the Linux nerds can stop complaining about this now. It's seriously old already. This just goes to prove that 95% of Linux users only use Linux because it is (was?) free. They honestly don't think it's a superior operating system. Pay up.
2003-08-08 04:27:08 PM

Besmunge means never having to insert closing tags...
2003-08-08 04:27:11 PM
We care about Sco, Linux, or anything of this nature, why?
Bring on the boobies, dammit.
2003-08-08 04:27:12 PM

You're contreswarking the meaning of besmunge.
2003-08-08 04:27:41 PM
I thought it was really funny.

Oh wait, we're not talking about California politics anymore... oops.

Ok I thought this was inane.. but I still think California politics are funny.
2003-08-08 04:28:01 PM
What's with the bible quote at the end ?
2003-08-08 04:28:08 PM
I don't get it and I don't think I want to.
2003-08-08 04:29:05 PM
I don't get it. Can someone explain this to me in a manner which would leave me giving a shiat?

Some of SCO's Unix code has somehow made it into every Linux OS. Weither this is from SCO's own stupidity, a coincidence or a hacker doing it illegally has yet to be determined. Mostly because SCO isn't willing to tell people WHAT is illegal. They claim it mostly covers multiple CPU code.

They have given out 20 lines of code that is simular, and are asking people to play $699(server) or $199(home) because of it.

What makes it more funny, is that SCO wants you to pay for a single CPU system running any flavor of Linux, but then claim their code is mostly for multiple processor systems.

Linux has a history of removing code if it's illegal, so SCO is dragging this thing on purpose. Trying to extort money.
2003-08-08 04:29:26 PM
Yeah, this is not a Fark story, the people here are not geeky enough to be interested in this. Keep stuff like this on Slashdot.
2003-08-08 04:29:30 PM
Awldun, your like joking right? Canadian money? Have you never played Monopoly??
2003-08-08 04:30:10 PM
shiat, pkjun, you're right! What with all the exciting SCO talk I guess I got smmamer pittle. ;-)

An elf? What a fag. I could see if it were a Drow of a Mind Flayer or a Tarrisque..........

Replace 'slashdot' with 'beaten' and his plea for mirrors would be met with much more enthusiasm.
2003-08-08 04:33:41 PM
I found it funny
2003-08-08 04:35:51 PM
My 3 year old daughter today said "Hey Daddy, I know, I have an idea, let's go to the Zoo"
I thought that was really funny!
That she said "I know! I have an idea!"
Wait, why am I wasting time posting this comedy gold in a comments thread when I can get it posted as a main headline!
Be right back!
2003-08-08 04:35:52 PM
That was on Slashdot earlier, and had been slashdotted into oblivion. Now its on Fark a few hours later, and its ok?

Behold... THe power of Fark to ressurect /.'ed sites!
2003-08-08 04:35:53 PM

It's okay. I often get pubbawupped after reading billikant watooms, so I can groklig your mistake :p
2003-08-08 04:36:01 PM

So the page is tepid, but the topic is interesting... looky there

(it's amazing how many people will waste their own time by wasting other people's times with comments about how much they didn't like something that they can't just walk away from don't ya like run on sentences?)

2003-08-08 04:37:41 PM
(scratches head)
2003-08-08 04:38:37 PM
obviously a post only a computer geek would love....
so someone 'splain to me and my crappy html skilled self how to insert a pic in comments (for future use)
i can do bold but not sure how to insert pic
2003-08-08 04:39:36 PM
Heh! That was some pretty funny stuff.
2003-08-08 04:40:05 PM

While I am not a "Linux nerd", I can't help but point out your incredible naivety. It has nothing to do with Linux being "free" or being a superior operating system genius, it has to do with extortion, Intellectual Property laws, and a host of other Big-Words-You-Wouldn't-Understand.
2003-08-08 04:40:13 PM
Ok, I get it Canadian money=Monopoloy money. I'm an idiot. I will shut up now.
