Ooohhhhhhh, there's a rat in the back as a matter of fact,
whose ass is as big as a cat,
And the gerbil in the corner let's no one ignore her,
cause she thinks she's the passionate one, OH YEAH!

[/my sincere appologies to 'The Sweet']

Wasn't there a Stephen King story called "Night Shift" or something - about an old factory filled with rats. Anyway, all I know is Dr. Jones (Sr.) would never be able to go there - cause he hates rats.

2003-08-08 11:26:10 AM
yep. This was story #2 on last night's NYC news. Right after Ahnald.

/so bored, sick of sitting at home, wants KK, losing any edge she ever had on coming up with witty retorts.

I, for one, welcome our rodent overlords.

No wait, actually that's pretty creepy.

2003-08-08 11:57:58 AM
We feed the cats to the rats and the rats to the cats and get the cat-skins for nothing.

One of the scariest books I ever read as a kid.

Probably some mutant species from outer space disguised as rats. They're just waiting to take over the world and brainwash us with their crazy rodent ways. Just wait and see.

"Once one tourist in Iowa sees it, you have a thousand of them cancelling their tickets to New York."

If a tourist in Iowa can see a New York rat, it's one big farking rat!

2003-08-08 12:08:04 PM
Was one of them accompanied by four turtles, by any chance?

2003-08-08 12:08:34 PM
"The rat affair has also become a political pest for Michael Bloomberg, New York's Mayor. The vermin are symbolic of the old image of New York, as a place of decay and danger."

Yep, confirmation that they've invaded the Mayor's Office.

p.s. save the chiuauas

Beware all! It's ROMD!!! Rats of Mass Destruction!

2003-08-08 12:12:29 PM

Basil Fawlty: Well, of course it's a rat! You have rats in Spain, don't you - or did Franco have them all shot?

2003-08-08 12:13:04 PM
Kinda off topic but why are mice and rats always associated with cheese? I mean, yeah you can use cheese to catch them etc... but they eat almost anything. It not like its their primary food source. I don't get it. There aren't little rodent dairies around or anything. Well, none that I know of at least.

2003-08-08 12:13:20 PM
RyogueShinigami - Good plan to get rid of them, if we start calling them that, not even our military intelligence will be able to find them anymore.

2003-08-08 12:15:45 PM
Rats and mice are associated with cheese because everyone loves a cliche.

2003-08-08 12:16:01 PM
First thing I thought of was the T.V. show "Wings"

"Goin' to the junkyard to shoot us some rats."

Lowell was an idiot savant

2003-08-08 12:19:58 PM
lol farkam_asylum I never thought of that. So you think Jimmy Hoffa changed his name to JHOMD (Jimmy Hoffa of Mass Destruction) so he couldn't be found? haha that sounds like a good fark name doesn't it?

2003-08-08 12:22:14 PM

sorry, only image I could find of the Secret of NIMH

Rats are to NYC as...

A) Cottage cheese is to jlo ass
B) Dennys is to shiatty food
C) Fark is to flame war
D) Kobe is to sodomy
E) All of the above

2003-08-08 12:29:05 PM
Give all kids a Catapult and then a playstation game for every 500 rats they bring in.

2003-08-08 12:33:30 PM
Why is it I've never seen one of these so called "Giant Rats?"

2003-08-08 12:35:23 PM
CST

You mean slingshot?

2003-08-08 12:35:29 PM
Have the nation's serial killers brainwashed so that they believe that rats are the ultimate threat that needs extermination and give them some tools to accomplish the goal (and a surgically implanted tracking device so that we know precisely where they are at any given time, you know, just in case).

You won't have a more dedicated, resourceful and efficient killer to wipe out rats for as long as they can breathe.

ClothedSexualTouching

nice idea but it won't work. The little tykes would breed the varmint and then kill them rather than go after them.

2003-08-08 12:39:31 PM
so grab some butcher's gloves, and hunt them up... if you've got too much mobile meat, feed 'em to the homeless...

Maybe it's this one...

I work in a big old factory, and there are rats there. Once, the guy that works in the tool crib caught a rat. He skinned it out, and was using the skin like a puppet on his hand to scare people. Everyone was totally creeped out by this guy.

Darn, beat me to the punch with both the NIMH and Princess Bride references.

2003-08-08 12:48:55 PM
rats just need better PR. Bloomberg should get Lizzie Grubman on the case. Peeps should be coming to New York to see the rats! they're huge! and totally fearless! they glare at you defiantly! and did i say huge? huge. not nutria-huge, but big enough. i had one in my apartment once--the cats were terrified! i've kinda grown to love 'em. saw two in a passionate embrace on the A train track a few months back, all i could think was 'how adorable!'

2003-08-08 12:50:03 PM
Not to be a pain in the ass, but it doesn't say that the rats were 'cat sized' in the article.

I've seen an awful lot of feral rats in my day in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc... I've never seen any freakishly large rats.

When I lived in NYC, people would tell me about the 'giant' rats they would see waddling through the refuse near the Brooklyn bridge. I'm convinced that couldn't tell the difference between a rat and a possum.

2003-08-08 12:53:15 PM
Isn't it great that the best fire department in the world has to live and work in a place infested with rodents while they get paid barely enough to survive in the city they protect. All the meanwhile, the politicians wear FDNY hats and close down firehouses. Yay Bloomburger!

2003-08-08 12:53:20 PM
"Christine Quinn, a city councillor, said: "Once one tourist in Iowa sees it, you have a thousand of them cancelling their tickets to New York."

As if we (ex-)Iowans have never seen a big-ass rat. WTF does Ms. Quinn think cats were domesticated for >5000 years ago? To protect skyscrapers? Starbucks stores? Hip designer bo-teeks? Try grain, big-city beyotch.

My almost lost a dog to a rat that held sway over the silo. That's why farmers own guns.

2003-08-08 12:53:43 PM
we just needf to breed these to the size of a horse. That'll sort them thar rats.

2003-08-08 01:02:16 PM
sounds like great sport to me- a lawn chair, a box of
cereal for bait, and a .22 sheridan air rifle. we had
a few rats up at a buddy's gold claim- they'd chew on an
exposed corner of the tent cabin while we were sitting
around the campfire. three regular ol' rats and a kangaroo
rat in one night. that's why gold camp pantry boxes are
covered in heavy screen...

we get mice here, and when there's one, there's twenty.
so I go to the dollar store, buy and bait up at least
ten traps, then check the traps every day. last time
the carnage ended at nine mice. in two days.

had a rat in the delivery truck a couple of years ago,
caught it. wound up catching eight rats. I prefer using
traps to poison, that way I know where the dead rat is so
he doesn't stink things up. with big rat traps, be sure to
wire it down so they don't steal it...

2003-08-08 01:12:44 PM
Fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats....

2003-08-08 01:16:10 PM
The vermin are symbolic of the old image of New York, as a place of decay and danger.

The old image? You mean the never ceasing reality. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot, "Everyone's a fan of New York". Uh-huh.

2003-08-08 01:16:36 PM
Anyone who thinks rats can't get as big as cats has never worked for the sanitation system.
My dad was a plumber for the city of chicago back in the 70s. He used to actually carry a shotgun to work when he went down into the sewers - because the rats were so big and mean, they'd actually attack the workers.

/shudder

I've worked in this house many times and I can tell you firsthand that nobody here is exaggerating the story. The weekend before the house was closed the guys caught 16 rats.

2003-08-08 01:18:24 PM
I had a yorkshire terrier and a portugese water dog.

I once worke up to a mouse jumping up and down in my wastebasket.

So I took the mouse, and the 2 dogs(heck, one's a terrier) and put them in the bathtub. I was hoping for some sort of gladiator combat to go on between the three.

Nothing happened. The dogs coudln't be less interested.

2003-08-08 01:22:41 PM
You should have hawks nesting on skyscrapers. They would help exterminating the rats. And chihuahuas.

Rat

for the record: I was nowhere near the place
