Just filled up at $4.21

SouthernManDunWrong: Bush's fault

Thing is, there really wasn't an explanation, as far as I could tell, as to that specific price jump.

I thought they blamed it on the Chinese.

Here is an idea. We can pay Brazil to drill, then buy their oil.

2011-04-17 09:20:46 PM
Don't worry, the oil companies are making tons of money and all that largesse will soon trickle down to us peons.

Clearly, we should follow the GOP's lead on this and give the oil companies a larger federal subsidy.

1.28/L here, which is 4.85/gallon I believe.

Yeah, but you get paid relatively more and most likely don't commute 50 miles a day like most people. Go fark yourself.

Well, if this keeps up, the true horror of the situation may present itself, and the auto industry may have to actually design cars that are...my God, it terrifies me to even breathe it, but...

Efficient. There, I said it. Efficient.

FFS people, Europe has cars running on TDI engines that get 50-60 miles a gallon. No matter what happens in the future, we're not going to get back to buck a gallon gas. We will have to change the way we do things.

This, because it's the fiscally responsible thing to do to keep us out of debt and to keep the budget from collapsing. We need to increase the Faith Based initiative and give more tax payer money to churches too.

Engines are much more efficent than they used to be, and while unneeded horsepower does play a role, so do the thousands of pounds of mandated safety features. Not that having lots of mandated safety features is a bad thing, but that does have a huge impact on gas mileage.

Actually I also get paid .50/km for driving from the nice american company I work for too.

But really, complaining about has prices just seems annoying and pointless.

Some large cities have vast expanses where it's too expensive for the average person to live comfortably. And those vast expanses are often where the jobs are.

Only $3.79 a gallon here in Real America. Suck it, libs.

I think i'd have been a bit more enthused about blowing up the desert if we at least got lower gas prices out of it.

With the full derp the Republicans have been up to, I'm horrified at the prospect of them taking the Presidency in 2012. And these gas prices put a damper on Obama's reelection chances.

Yeah, with all the available jobs out there, why would anyone choose one that's 25 miles away from their home?

Canadians do not get paid relatively more than Americans.

Only a small minority of Americans have a commute that is 50 miles per day or more.

2011-04-17 10:39:45 PM
Yeah it's like $6.80 a gallon in Japan, which is high, but only "highest since 2 years ago" so that's not even so crazy.

The US has seriously cheap gas.

That said, yeah, it seems high in comparison to normal prices now when it hits (locally to me it's $3.89 a gallon).

Happily my commute is only 30 minutes... ON FOOT.

When it is the only job you can get you would commute it too. Move to a rural state and 25 miles to work is nothing.

I saw $3.60 earlier today, and that was a Shell station. As long as it stays down for one more week, so I can get to a wedding and in particular my buddy can get from Fort Wayne to Destin staying under his $4/gallon budget, then fark it bring on the fuel apocalypse. Because really, what's to stop it from hitting $5 a gallon? Well, demand doesn't change, but we can't stop speculators from driving up the cost by shoving themselves into the process with absolutely no gain to ourselves and indeed only downsides to ourselves, that would be socialism.

I'm sorry this is my fault. 2 years ago, at the peak of the high oil/petrol prices, I lost my licence. Prices immediately dropped. I got my licence back a while ago, but only started driving in the last month or 2. So yeah, sorry about that.

Hobbits spend all their time walking. I'm not sure why you think they'd be using a lot of petrol.

I know quite a few people who would dispute your statement. The average commute is 16 miles one way, according to the internets.

My wife commutes 55 miles one way. We both teach music in a rural area, and it's pretty much a one person per town kind of gig, so she's in one of the next towns over.

Yes, I did some similar googling. It looks like (from what are surprisingly tough-to-find stats) more than two-thirds of Americans have a round trip commute that is less than 32 miles. And it looks like the 50-ish milers are about 15% of people.

That's not nothing, but it's not as though most Americans are commuting 50 miles a day.

There's no question that higher gas prices will pinch some people in the short-term. And this is a bad economic time for the cost of anything to rise. But, long-term, higher gas prices mean cleaner air, better public transportation, more efficient vehicles, etc. It's not all downside.

2011-04-18 12:23:56 AM
And this is why I'm going to take a pay cut to work closer to home.

I'm so tired of seeing giant SUVs that seat 20 with the only occupant being the driver racing around town I really do hope gas goes up to $10/gallon. And it's the way they drive as well. They mash the pedal to the floor to open up that big V8 so they can be the first one applying breaks at the last minute at the next red light.
