Anyone who remembers high-school physics knows that a fluctuating magnetic field can induce an electrical current. That's the principle behind transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), where an electromagnet is held over the head and pulsed rapidly.

Meh, I'm cheap. I'll just tape a permanent magnet to my head and beat it with a hammer.

Maybe they could use a subcutaneous microphone to allow the patient to transmit verbal instructions to his own brain. Like "think happy thoughts" or "throw the harpoon."

That was an awesome episode. and it had so many other uses for that device, the pain reliever section from the magnet was pretty cool.
