The English language isn't set in stone and has been changing and evolving for hundreds of years. Deal with it, language purists.

I think there's a fine balance that needs to be kept.

Language does change, and will continue to change. I have nothing against it evolving because that's natural for a language to do.

I just hate it when people use that as an excuse for not learning proper spelling or grammar. That's just laziness.

Having said that, I see no reason to keep "lol" out of the dictionary other than that it's become so overused that it doesn't mean what it originally did.

Agreed. Some of the emails I receive from friends and, even more disturbingly, co-workers make me cringe with their spelling and grammar errors. Like you said, most of the time it's simply a case of laziness. I honestly think more than half of the people at work don't know the difference between to and too, it drives me nuts.

But adding new words to the dictionary that have become part of everyday language is completely fine with me. Since 'lol' has become so prevalent it deserves a place along with 'truthiness' and 'Y2K' as words that have gone beyond their original meaning.

You think the BBC would do it's research, or even read Fark, and see that "OMG" has been around since 1917

"OMG! LOL's in the OED. LMAO!"

What is this, I don't even...

If you find the above string of letters utterly unintelligible, you are clearly an internet "noob". Let me start again.

Golly gosh! The popular initialism LOL (laughing out loud) has been inducted into the canon of the English language, the Oxford English Dictionary. Blimey! What is going on?

Nope...try again.

what you mean: "What you just said is so ridiculous and obviously absurd, I'm sitting here joyfully laughing in my chair."
What you actually did: *punched the monitor while screaming expletives*

Well..as one can see...the english language (which isn't true english, but a bastardized "kings english") is a conglomeration of different languages, I'm not gonna get all butt hurt over a few short cuts. LOL transmits a moment of laughter, and even though it is abused at times, it's here, and here to stay. If you don't like it, then stfu noob.

I recall when Beyonce basically got the word 'bootylicous' in there. No one really uses it anymore, but I'm still trying to get the term 'juicy caboosy' in there.

I love it when something I used in my 20s becomes the craze for kids younger than my 20-something kids.. and those kids decide it is their own, us old folks can't use it any longer.

Get over yourselves, kidlets.. in the 80s, you weren't even a gleam, but we were playing video games, writing little programs on our Atari or Commodore computers and typing LOL and =) to our friends over 300 baud modems.

This is an actual text I got from a CNA that worked for my family, "ok promise, il col u 2 remind 2. K c u." If the kids want to claim THIS as their own, that'd be ok by me. But get off my LOL lawn.

/doesn't really use lol much now.. it's mostly "HAH!" if I found something so funny that I should express it.
