Water-skeeters?
Cool.

"Through their use of vortices, water striders share general features with animals flying above and swimming below them."

I love a science talkin' kind of guy..

Ahhhhh! We're all going to die! These are the bugs from
Jackie Chan's 'Tuxedo!' ;)

Soon, english professors will decipher how to make sure everyone can use grammar right.

Note for you later farkers: Headline was grammatically incorrect.

Ku_no_Ichi I'm a microbiologist, do you want me to talk dirty to you?

Scientists have also discovered these bugs can feed the masses with fish and a loaf of bread.

Scientists have decipher the mystery

Not to be a spelling nazi here, but you meant deciphered right?

He walks on water?

Strider? Get it? Sorry.

"Scientists have concluded that Jesus was an insect"

/obligatory "I submitted this with a funnier headline yesterday" comment

The only thing is that the water bugs have a short life span, due to being hunted down by the duplicitous Judas Beetle.

2003-08-07 12:35:51 PM
Also, is "decipher" really something you do to a mystery? I thought you were supposed to "unravel" them.

Nice.

National Geographic has a cool picture to go with their version of the story:

Didn't this guy walk on water too, or something.

2003-08-07 12:36:40 PM
wouldn't it be cool if they could make boats with this technology?

2003-08-07 12:36:44 PM
I have wonder how headlines such as this get posted. I honsetly don't thinks some of those have been check.

Woah, instant album cover!

Since when was surface tension a major scientific breakthrough? Not that I have any grasp of science. I actually believed Katrina and the Waves were a group of solar-ray travellers.

We need to start a new cliche for these science headlines: Still no cure for bad grammar.

To think, I thought it was an irreducibly complex process only explained by God.

Also, is "decipher" really something you do to a mystery? I thought you were supposed to "unravel" them.

Nope- unravelling is what you do to mysteries, especially those wrapped in enigmas.

As far as this discovery goes, I think there are plenty of crawly-things around. I don't see the need to make new ones. Especially robot ones.

2003-08-07 12:39:26 PM
TomFoolery: Soon, english professors will decipher how to make sure everyone can use grammar right.

And you complain about the grammar in the headline?

2003-08-07 12:39:44 PM
Mwhahahaaha. We are finally one step closer to creating a biblical super robot. With an army of these I can smite anyone who stands in my way. Let me start checking these things off....

[ ] Samson's strength.
[ ] Moses power to split water.
[X] Jesus ability to walk on water.
[ ] Lazarus longevity.
[ ] Noah's skill at herding animals.
[ ] Adam's disregard for clothing.
[ ] Judas team winning attitude.
[ ] Sol's good luck.

Hmm, damnit we have a long way to go. Why won't these idiot scientists hurry up. See, now I'm mad...Must remain calm..INNER STRENGTH.....inneeer streeength.

2003-08-07 12:39:52 PM
The theory was first proposed by a team of applied mathematicians...

Hey, I have a bachelors degree is applied mathematics! Don't know nothing about no bugs, though...

Walks on water

2003-08-07 12:40:49 PM
Oh yeah -- "invisible U-shaped vortices" -- thaaaat explains it. I'll go make me some a them too!

2003-08-07 12:40:57 PM
or about HTML...

2003-08-07 12:41:40 PM
why couldn't they use high speed fotography of real insects to figure the same thing out?

"

wouldn't it be cool if they could make boats with this technology?"

To get the surface tension just to support one person, you'd need like a mile of surface area,
and some sort of imaginary material that's strength/weight ratio is sick.

2003-08-07 12:43:04 PM
Aww, i always just assumed it was space magic....like i assume is the cause of anything i don't know or understand.

2003-08-07 12:44:18 PM
vortices - A spiral motion of fluid within a limited area, especially a whirling mass of water or air that sucks everything near it toward its center.

with words like that, these researchers are the life of the party, pass the Zima please.

2003-08-07 12:45:05 PM
Hose down the sidewalk and I too can walk on water

/Sheesh, like it's some big deal or something...

2003-08-07 12:45:22 PM
i always thought it was water tention.

2003-08-07 12:45:39 PM
Because of this, the water strider is able to obey Newton's third law of motion.

I personally completely disregard Newtons third law.

2003-08-07 12:46:16 PM
OK, Blaze, now explain how an insect's foot creates a vortex.

Please. (Cuz I gotta figure out some way to impress chicks.)

2003-08-07 12:48:21 PM
Wow, scientists have discovered surface tension. What's next? A man in space? Images transmitted from one room to another? Maybe even across an entire city?
