This guy is probably the only interesting thing I've heard about this movie so far.

Casting him actually got me curious about this movie. He was phenomenal in Boardwalk Empire

2011-04-12 03:07:01 PM
Wouldn't he be better as the big guy that can't get his powers to work right?

I kinda liked the idea of Viggo playing Zod

This.... It bears repeating in every thread about this movie.

Zod = Backstory = Boring Exposition

Can we please just have a giant frickin' robot, or Metallo, or a generic alien invasion from a different planet? I'd settle for a ridiculous Bizarro or Mxyzptlk at this point....

Yeah the movie got bad reviews, did horrible in the theaters... but I still find it to be a guilty pleasure that I'll watch every time it's on tv.

Michael Shannon's success after Revolutionary Road gives me hope that John Hawkes will find similar success after Winter's Bone. Both are just amazing actors that it seemed no one knew who the hell you were talking about until they got their Oscar nominations.

That being said I too was looking forward to Viggo but Shannon is too awesome not to check out.

The first (and only!) Zod was awesome! Why do they always have to gay things up for the reboot?

This.

I like the idea of Luthor being part of the story but not the main villain. I think he is too iconic and too much part of the fabric of the Superman universe to leave entirely out. I think Justice League always handled him really well - him seeing himself as the guy Metropolis OUGHT to love if it weren't for Superman. So, always a dangerous rival while other enemies crop up.

2011-04-12 04:24:29 PM
My favorite movies are the ones where they do the exact same thing again. It's too bad Superman only has two enemies.

Shrugging Atlas: Is this a re-boot of the emo-Superman film from a few years ago, or a re-re-boot of the Reeves films?

Just like I knew we would be, we're on third generation films now.

My only pleasure in all these remakes, reboots, reimaginings, sequels and prequels will be the inevitable backlash against them. It's become way too big a movement to not have a backlash.

Question for the comic geeks experts. Did General Zod exist in the comics before the movie, or was he created for the movie?

Well, Zod isn't quite as over done as Luthor. If this movie does well, maybe they can tone it back some.

Good. I wish other comic book movies would take a cue and realize you don't HAVE to have an established villian.

But if you don't have an established villain, then the comic book nerds will cry and whine and poop their pants and accuse you of sucking up to the general public and not being faithful to the source material...and who am I kidding, they'd do that anyway.

Pretty much. I'm just saying that Superman II was the best comic book movie for a long time, and is probably still in the top 3.

I was hoping for an original villian for the new Batman film.

He may be good, I don't know(haven't seen his work), but his chin puts me in mind of the mute from Sup 2(like he's a crazy hybrid of Zod and the big guy), or any other big chin villian from past film era's(some the same guy).

Orgasmatron138: Good. I wish other comic book movies would take a cue and realize you don't HAVE to have an established villian.

While that's a good point, ideally, but poor writing would be more evident. Comes down to you having more faith in writers that I do, especially when it comes to sci-fi / super hero sort of things. ( I mean, look how Hero's turned out)

When a comic book is adhered to, there's a safety net, the cookie cutter format saves us from what writers "think" is creative and clever. When that net vanishes, bad things can and will happen. Could get away with it in the 80s and some in the 90s, but not as much today.

/hope that's understandable

But wait! Zod was then incorporated into the comics. So the re-reboot will be relying on an established villain from a past movie AND the comics.

I'm not a huge Supes fan, but I know there was a fairly big storyline fairly recently that involved Zod, with Superman actually working for him in some capacity as part of some big group of Kryptonians that somehow survived the destruction of Krypton. I remember reading a synopsis of the storyline and thinking I was on acid.

From wikipedia:

General Zod (full name Dru-Zod) is a fictional character who appears in comic books published by DC Comics, a supervillain who is one of Superman's more prominent enemies. The character first appeared in Adventure Comics #283 (April 1961), and was created by Robert Bernstein and George Papp.[1

WRONG WRONG WRONG.

General Zod is not "creepy." He's a military mastermind, not a "creepy" person. So if this actor is "creepy", he's nowhere near the type of actor you need to play Zod.

I was commenting on what I've seen of his acting ability via Boardwalk Empire, it will be interesting to see if he's able to lend that to other types of roles.

True, but with all due respect, realize that Batman and Robin was comprised of established characters. It turned out so bad it derailed the franchise and actually convinced the powers that be to use a REAL director when they started over.
