Although I don't really care about baseball, I somewhat follow the Sox. That is lulz worthy though, especially after that pounding they got last night.

Most of their losses have not even been close. Face it- their starting pitching sucks, and it was clear before they season that was the possible weak point.

Think of 10 baseball games as roughly 1 NFL game (16 games vs. 162). If the thought-to-be best team loses to a very good team in week 1 (Averaging the talents of Texas, Cleveland, and NY) a ranking of #6 wouldn't be crazy.

2011-04-12 01:14:49 PM
Power rankings are supposed to be based on who is playing well NOW. Not "the sox are supposed to be good and the orioles aren't!"

Also, leaving off the bottom half takes all the fun out of it. What do you expect from the actual league?

/note that these are mlb.com rankings.

But they're the best 2-8 team ever. That has to count for something, right?

I agree with the sample size point, but they seem impressed enough by fast starts by teams like Cleveland, Baltimore and Kansas City. Just seems a little inconsistent to make Boston the exception. I'd be more critical if it were ESPN, though.

I'm loving baseball this season.

/this is about as far into a season the Pirates have gone without being mathematically eliminated since they lost Bonds + Bonilla.

Ive been talking to a lot of Pirates fans that have been saying "This is the year!" (we break .500). Good luck to you guys! Meanwhile, my Astros appear convinced to make my 100 loss season prediction come to fruition.

Trying to do ratings this early in the season involves big swings if you simply go by record. I would hope that if the BoSox keep up this run for another week, they will not be on this list.

2011-04-12 02:33:50 PM
The Boston rating is pure bunk. I watched last night's game and Boston looked bad in just about all aspects of the game. Tampa Bay looked like the '29 A's last night.

We ruled out playoff runs since Clinton's first term. A .500+ season would probably prompt a parade, riot, setting random things on fire.

FTFA: The Red Sox are off to a slow start, but the club is too talented, the pitching is too good and it's way too early in the season to count them out.

Boston's pitching is overrated (new window). While I think they hiting will come around this season there are to many overpriced arms. Clay Buchholz is a stud and looks to perform fro years but the rest... their moment has passed.

1 through 5 look good. The Red Sox at 6 is a joke, as is already documented.

I take beef with the Braves at 7. What gives? My Brewers just beat them in a 4-game series 3-1.

Gallardo had a complete game shut out against them. Narveson has a 0.00 ERA with 13 IP and 14 K's over 2 starts. The Brewers offense started off slow against the Reds, but by the end of the 2nd week is back on track, and will only get better when LuCroy and Hart return. Not to mention Greinke just got fast tracked for his return.

And also, the Brewers are 5-5... The Braves are 4-6.

/b-b-b-b-but, it's OUR year! :(

Think of it this way, Boston has been outscored by 32 runs so far. That's 3 runs per game, lets stick with football and say each run was a field goal, then Boston would only be 0-1 but they would've been outscored by 96 points. If it were basketball and each run were a deuce then they'd lose the one game by 64 points. If we were counting by 10s they would've lost by 320 runs. If this were tennis they would be down by 480.

I was at the game yesterday, and sending Hamilton home when the guy who caught the ball was maybe 20 feet away was one of the stupidest moves I've ever seen. Sorry to hear about the injury.
