One of the silliest bits of populist tripe. Today should also be Enjoy Your Highways, Cleaner Water, and Low Cost of Higher Education Day.

Dear other states,

We fought in the Revolution. We stayed loyal during the Civil War. We build the weapons to defend America, and we pay the most taxes to fund it.

You're welcome.

Love,
Connecticut.

Basically this. Selfishness abounds.

That's silly, I celebrate Tax Freedom Hour every day that I work. Life is much more fulfilling that way.

Clearly you're mistakeb. Connecticut is a hellhole where no good American would ever want to live. Only the Mashantucket and the Pequot dare tread.

There's a healthy population in Connecticut who were UConn, Patriots, and Yankees fans. That trifecta of sports mega-fail alone makes the state worth nuking from orbit.

Hey! We could always just round 'em up and send them back to Boston and New York. We'll deal with the UCONN fans ourselves.

That stuff is probably paid for by about Jan 10th. Today should be enjoy your grandparents not asking for a loan all the time, getting health care, blowing shiat up all over the world, and not stepping over poor people with disease day, to better reflect where the government actually spends the money.

Yep, and taxes work the same way as your kids eating green beans:

Whining, biatching, pissing and moaning about it does exactly nothing. You still gotta pay them. However, unlike green beans you actually see tangible and intangible benefits.

And here's the simplest and most honest way to find out just how free you are.

Calculate your actual federal income tax rate. Simply take the amount of tax you owed this year, and divide it by the amount of income you earned. Both of those numbers are available on your 1040.

My actual federal tax rate this year was 8.5%. I had tax freedom day in mid February.

And so it was, the week before taxes were due... The entire city of Paducah, KY uttered a collective, "Oh shiat" and proceeded in one great mass to the Super Tax office.

Therein, they asked the great one, Papaw the righteous to deliver unto them his blessing and salvation; to save them from sin, blasphemy and late fees. To smite the unholy IRS and banish the collectors for another year...

And save them he did. With his holy mouse and logitech keyboard he summoned form 4868 - Extension to File, collected his $25 tithe and forgave their procrastination. And so it was, and so it shall be. Forever and ever, amen.

I would love to see this made into a real holiday.

Hell, let's just make it a new law.

You can only use tax-funded assets from Jan 1st until today. After today, you can't use highways, the police, fire departments, public schools.

You have to buy your own tax-free water(be sure to boil it!).

You get no further access to those things that your taxes pay for, from today onto Dec 31st.

But, you get to keep all your money! Isn't that great?

I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make here. You don't pay the most per capita. You don't pay the most as a state... You just pay a lot. And somehow you're proud of being near the bottom of the pile.

God, Americans are such 'whiners' when it comes to taxes. For fark's sake, we live in the greatest country in the world, with an incredible standard of living and security.

And you'd think that our government was demanding our first born children from the level of big-teared sobbing coming from our citizens when it comes to paying into the system.

i244: I dont understand how states with no income tax arent on the bottom of that list.

crap..... just realized, this is based purely on federal taxes.

in which case, the states on the bottom of the list are at the bottom because the wages paid there are lower (because the cost of living is lower), therefore they pay less taxes because they are in a different bracket.

2011-04-12 01:10:03 PM
I don't mind paying local taxes (roads, schools, police, etc). State taxes, meh. Federal taxes are ok in some cases (military, but there are a lot of things the federal government doesn't need to be taxing for (education, etc).

The more wealth you have the more the numbers are skewed.

According to the tax calculator, anyone making $100,000/yr taxable income owes $22,372.00. Depending on where in the country you live, keeping rent and food for a month under $1,800 is pretty reasonable. Someone with a $1,400 mortgage and $300 in food would be paying more in tax than "rent and groceries."

You don't even have to get into the "oh, pity the rich" levels of wealth to hit this point. Anything over maybe $50-70k/yr could pull it off without much trouble.

/though we should still pity the rich
//it'll trickle down

You'd have a point, if the government confined itself to public goods (non-excludable and non-rivalrous). But in fact huge portions of the federal budget are simply wealth transfers from the young (who don't vote) to the elderly (who do vote). The US government is basically an entity that seizes money and transfers it to old people, while running a military and infrastructure on the side.

Wow! multiple wars, a defense budget close to the spending of the rest of the world, prisons galore and loans from China.

All covered by the taxpayer by April 12! What a deal!

Future U.S. citizens will be forever grateful to the selfless people of this age.
