Poor reactor design due to corruption.

Sounds like Japan's problem was too much regulation of industry.

In some areas outside of the initial evacuation zone, people have been getting a year's worth of radiation exposure every ~8 days. Link (new window)

ibanezdude: Chernobyl released hundreds of thousands of terabecquerels into the atmosphere. It released hundreds and thousands of them. That's as many as several quadrillion becquerels.

And that's terrible.

How do you know, do you have your own becquerelometer?

You know Three Mile Island, 'Level 5.' Slow, yes. Chernobyl, maybe. Radioactive gas. But it charmed the pants off Jimmy Carter and didn't kill anybody. That ain't Chernobyl."

Send more vodka?

Otherwise, I'd advise either the Red Cross or International Medical Corps.

Jaycatt: FTA: "The agency believes the cumulative amount from the Fukushima plant is less than that from Chernobyl."

So that's some good news, right?

The radiation is 10% from what Chernobyl produced. At the Chernobyl plant, the core exploded. In Japan, it was hydrogen explosions.

What we are not hearing about is the condition of 15 - 20 adjacent Atomic Piles.

TheCableGuy: "hundreds of thousands of terabecquerels of radioactive iodine-131 were released into the air. One terabecquerel is one trillion becquerels. "

Interesting choice to point out that a terabecquerel is one trillion becquerels but not add another sentence to clarify what a becquerel is.

From my research it is going to take something like a baseball bat to get a straight conversion.

Knara: ThunderPelvis: Oh for f*ck's sake. Is this the thread where people living thousands of miles from Japan wet themselves?

Yup. And where everyone who is scared of nuclear power is also immediately a "told you so!" expert, at that.

But, that's also part of the American way. It's good form to feel bad for other people in public, and the bigger you can make the problem seem, the more empathetic *you yourself* can seem, as a result (and the more you can poo-poo the folks who are more objective in their assessment).

The pants-wetting folks are the same folks whose heads pop off when they're told that the Chernobyl area is now part of a pan-European green belt and will be open for tourism in a year or so.

Wait, let me get this straight: even though we now have a definitive announcement, as reported by all major news sources, that this is a level 7 on par with Chernobyl, possibly worse, and you remain in the "people are overreacting" camp???!!?

Still support nuclear as a stepping stone between fossil fuels and something sustainable in the long term. In the end it will have to be solar. If we can only figure out how to make efficient use of it it's nigh limitless energy for billions of years.
