Whaling is to become Iceland's
second largest export...right behind
wacko quasi-techno singers

They almost have a monopoly on the bottled water market.
What more do they want?

I liked this sentence:

"Anti-whaling groups were quick to criticise Iceland's decision."

That gets my "No-Shiat-Sherlock" award for the day.

I bet the whales aren't going to like this.

2003-08-06 02:54:34 PM
Best. Headline. Today.

2003-08-06 02:54:38 PM
Is there any reason to hunt whales nowadays? Seriously. This scientific study aside (which seems specious), are there any industries that absolutely rely on whale products for survival?

Except certain Eskimo groups who rely on limited hunting of whales for cultural reasons, I can't think of any reason why people *need* to go after whales of any kind.

Little help here?

Iceland, Japan, Norway -- awesome countries for tourists to visit. Why do they need whaling?

Nothing quite like the taste of a whale blubber and lard sandwich. I can't wait 'till McDonalds gets on board with this industry.

Those groups rely on whales for food.

Son of Thunder:

Yeah, I know, but I thought there are also some groups who only perform ceremonial hunts, no?

I can only think of one industry that could argue they *need* whale products: perfume industry (ambergris). Although, to my knowledge, most manufacturers stopped using that stuff decades ago.
