At least clean up the place. I keep hearing about clean coal but those mines always look filthy to me.

Huh, I was watching the show but I didn't realize it was brand new.

I kept thinking to myself, "Why don't they just get another generator and run the continuous miner on that one?"

I wonder why they didn't do a show about mountain top removal?

My friend the audiologist did his internship in West Virginia, and treated a lot of miners. One situation he frequently saw was hearing loss caused by the machinery they used to shore up the ceiling of the mine shafts. The catch was, you had to be able to hear the machine to know if it was working correctly, so if they wore the proper ear protection to prevent the hearing loss, they risked having the shaft collapse and kill them.

Miners deserve the same thanks and respect normally reserved only for soldiers and firemen.

MSHA regs are a convoluted mess. The only ones worse are HazMat regs. The HazMat table can burn in hell.

That show is terrifying to watch.

I worked a lot of shiaty, dangerous jobs around Detroit when I was growing up, but that show illustrates how good I had it.

The Tea Party should weigh in and talk about faceless Obamunist regulators taking away the mine operators freedom to kill the workers.

I remember watching one of those Gold Mining shows with the BF once. He's never gone mining for anything before but as a blue collar worker he's used many similar tools and apparatuses that these kinds of jobs call for and about halfway through this episode he groans and goes on how they apparently were using some tool backwards. I couldn't tell so I ignored it. For the rest of the episode they were b*tching about how they hadn't been getting any results so they called in someone from another operation and the first thing out of his mouth is "You got everything backwards."

Most of the time, if there isn't an on-site regulator or working overseer, I would expect that we have way more fatalities than we usually see in these industries. Seems like they let any moron go down a hole and dig.

The Irresponsible Captain: It takes this for the MSHA to do their job? Buncha fat farks on the couch I guess.

Anytime inspectors or auditors drop in they go through retraining their workers on the spot and telling them precisely how to behave while the inspectors are there. I work in the pharmaceutical industry and have heard stories of people seeing FDA inspectors approach their building for a surprise visit and instructing people to hide malfunctioning equipment or stop using it as if it wasn't even being used for a while (of course inspectors would see recent use) or that they'd finally get around to getting those dust bunnies out from behind processors (not computers, the kind that can mix chemicals that you're intended to inject in your bloodstream).

Of course, this is usually done with some of the sub sub contractors. The actual corporate factories are effing spotless and run with little to no problems.

In the debut, a miner used the wrong tool -- a 12-inch pick -- to pull down loose roof rock. The Mine Safety and Health Administration says it was too small for the job.

Actually, if it pulled down the loose rock it was adequate for the job if not the regs.

I should tip OSHA off to a commercial for a furniture store showing off their warehouse.

It's not safe to raise/lower a forklift while it is moving forwards (or backwards) and yet that's exactly what can be seen in the commercial.

What I find scary is that the miners and company are on their best behavior when those cameras are rolling. Wonder what it is like when the film crew goes home?

The reg's there because if the tool is not long enough, the guy using it will be under the rock he's trying to scale off. Good way to get squished.

Seriously, dig up pictures of any sort of development and let me know the difference. B-b-b-but this looks worse!

If only their were engineers and scientists working on both the regulatory and the industry sides in mining.

I like how the mine is struggling to make money.....its as if a couple people got together to start a business and started taking salaries right away expecting other people to make the business profitable.

So far they showed a shift superintendent, a mine superintendent a shift foreman and a mine foremen....that leaves 2 workers to bolt the roof and 1 to work the miner operator....not including the guy who sits in the wood panelled office and the guy who always acts as if the fire alarm just woke him up from his nap in the office trailer.

I think they hired another manager last episode.

Too many chiefs not enough indians.

If you watched, though. The worker chose to do what he did, and just used what he had handy. It's not like they handed him the wrong pick and said "Here, go do this."

The funny thing is that it was another guy who almost got squished because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Please... There's nothing "reality" about this, or any other "reality" based show.

Everything you saw was done that way for a reason; to make the show.

The part where they were using everything backwards? --On purpose, to create the conflict, so that they could have the other people come in at the last moment and say, "dude, you got it all backwards".

So that you, the viewer could go, "ohhhhh.... BURN!!!!"

/Most importantly, so that they can sell the ads.

I would imagine either the producers or the landowner "encouraged" the hiring of the new guy to go in and tell them what they were doing wrong, kind of like when they added Fred to Gold Rush:Alaska.

It was hilarious though when he said the reason the night shift sucks is because the generator is too small and if they had just bought what they really needed they wouldn't have any problems. They were about to fire the operator as if he was doing something wrong.

You're very mistaken in this case. The guys on the gold show didn't make much at all from the producers. They definitely did not intentionally set up machinery wrong to create drama. Hell, the guy that left the show would have sold them down the river if they were doing that shiat.

Don't confuse how they edit the show with how they are running their operation. Those guys are just morons.

It's the PRODUCERS that are making the money!!! - By selling the show to whatever channel will broadcast it... So the CHANNEL has something to sell to the ADVERTISERS.

Hell no, the people actually ON the show don't make jack schidt. That's how and why they make so many "reality" based shows.

I can tell you from experience that regulations are basically the governing body vs. companies that have to abide by them. There is a long, drawn out process that has to take place for regulation change that amounts to anything. Then they end up in court.

Example: The UN has been working since the early 90's on getting every country on the same page as far as labeling hazardous materials for transport. The US DOT just got around to implementing it this year. OSHA will do the same this summer.

All in all, though, it's better than no oversight. Reading case studies on companies that ignore safety regs is freaky as hell.
