ElGranCapitan: DTRTFA but the last time a British monarch (Victoria) had an adult grandchild that was second in line to the throne (Albert Victor) he was given the title Duke of Clarence. So if they follow that tradition, William would be made Duke of Clarence and Kate would be made Duchess of Clarence.

But won't they have to get clearance?

First off Will (it's alright if I call you "Will" right?) needs to become the Duke of Hazards and then we can all call her simply Daisy.

wage0048: She can't become queen: she's Catholic.

No, this cannot be correct. If Kate were Catholic, not only could she not become Queen (consort) of the UK, but William would forfeit his right to become King. Under a 1701 law (Act of Settlement of 1701), no British monarch or their spouse can be Catholic. This was the final resolution of the English Civil War between Catholics and Protestants (e.g. Guy Fawkes, etc.). There is no way in hell William would marry a Catholic.

I didn't research it just now, but Kate must be Protestant.

And so it is written and so it is done. They are the Duke and Duchess of Clarence Clemons.

fightUSAdownwardspiral: she probably could be, Catholics divorce now right? that was the "reason" for King Douche to create another religion identical to the catholics. Maybe theyll stop caring about religion like everyone else and try to move beyond this system of oppression.

Henry VIII had a number of reasons for wanting to divorce Catherine of Aragon, and the split from Rome had a number of causes. Don't forget, The Great Matter took years to figure out. Catherine had previously been married to Aurthur, Henry's older brother who, despite his life-long ill health, was being groomed for the kingship when he died as a teenager, shortly after his royal marriage to the Spanish princess. (Amusing historical moment: Henry, as a very young man, walked Catherine down the aisle at her marriage to Aurthur.) There was debate weather or not they had consummated the marriage (Catherine always claimed no, but there's some evidence that she didn't even know what sex was until her confessor explained it to her around the age of 19), which was very important at the time. If they had consummated the marriage, Henry would be disbarred from marrying her, since it would be considered incest. A papal dispensation was had, and Henry married Catherine.

In addition to the question of the validity of this Papal dispensation, there was also a question of who had the right to rule in England. Henry was a big fan of absolute sovereignty, and the idea that he had to take orders from the Bishop of Rome was anathema to him. He was a Prince of the Royal Blood who could chart his ancestry to William the Conquer (on his mothers side) and Sovereign of England, the duly anointed monarch. If he was beloved by God, and given this kingdom to rule in His right, why should he answer to any foreign prince?

Plus, this also co-insided with the Lutheran revolution and the Reformation of the Church. Ann Bolin was a very vocal reformer, and many changes were made at her suggestion. Henry was a very religious man and a devout Catholic for the majority of his life. It wasn't until Edward his son assumed the throne under the guardianship of notable Protestants in Court, did the changes start to become entrenched. Mary I tried to re-establish a Catholic rule during her years using violent and oppressive means (they don't call her Bloody Mary for nothing), but as she was unable to produce an heir, Elizabeth gained the throne and undid all of Mary's work.

That was stupid long.

tl;dr: Henry VIII was complex, now go learn your history.

brantgoose: If Prince William has or receives another traditional or specially granted or created title, such as "Duke of Such-and-such", Kate may well be titled Duchess, but she could be mere Lady Kate if the Queen is snippy about another commoner "Princess". In some royal families, a commoner or non-royal wife would be "Her Serene Highness" rather than "Her Royal Highness". Blood and birth are thicker than marriage contracts.

If I recall, Serene Highness was how the German/Austrian noble houses styled themselves, hence Prince Albert being styled His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Saxony, until his marriage to Queen Victoria. Link (new window)
