Actually, that's a pretty cool apartment. Reminds me of my studio I had in a rooming house once.

I've never been claustrophobic but that bed would drive me nuts.

I'm impressed. It works for her because the apartment is just a base she comes to for sleep, bathing and some down time; her life is played out in the city itself.

(Cue the video of the Hong-Kong apartment with movable walls)

This is like where I live now. A bit more expensive, but not much. I'm not even central.

Ha ha, only if she's 5-3

Yeesh...my computer room is bigger than her apartment. Heck, my master bathroom and walk-in closets are bigger than her apartment. She should move to Texas. She could get a 2000 sq. ft. house for $700 a month.

FredaDeStilleto: Cue the video of the Hong-Kong apartment with movable walls

That was pretty cool.

My place is over twice that size and I'm in the same position - constantly tossing crap out and minimizing what I do have. Thankfully I don't pay as much in rent.

Like the old joke goes: My apartment is so small, I have to step outside to change my mind! Hyuk, hyuk.

Looks quite well done. Though having a CRT TV as well as a flat panel widescreen computer? Seems a waste.

At least this will show the random retard Iowa FARKER , who proudly claims he moved out of his mothers trailer, why people in NY still live at home. Sorry Cletus, this is double your rent and see how little it gets you?

Heeeeey! Friends told me you could share half of 1,000 sq. ft. in Manhattan on a Barista's or semi-employed actor's salary.

For $700 a month, I get a nice 2-bedroom apartment with kitchen, bath, living room and big closets. The catch is I have to live in Oklahoma. To each their own.

Sweet, another thread where people from New York City can act like smug jackasses because they pay a shiatload of money for a tiny apartment and the rest of us just aren't cool enough to get it.

PacManDreaming: She should move to Texas. She could get a 2000 sq. ft. house for $700 a month.

The commute would be terrible though.

Also, that apartment space is not too terrible for a single person. I used to live in a tiny space (maybe 50ft sq) for a similar amount per month just because it was a 5 minute walk from walk and I knew I was only going to be there for 6 months.

P.J. O'Rourke said something like 'I'd rather be homeless in NYC than the king of Canada'. I'm sure that also applies to Texas.

My house is 4000 square feet and it's full of stuff I don't really need, but want to have anyway. I'm a walk to downtown and I have an awesome backyard and a two-car garage. Expensive? Probably a bit, but I can afford it. I don't do shrinky dink art and write books that are never going to be bought about personal stories from a Holaocaust survivor; they're a dime a dozen.

I have to be at the gymm in 26 minutes (actually exactly 26 minutes).

Wow. That's more than the monthly mortgage payment on our four bedroom house. I think I'll stay in Indy.

FlashHarry: the cost of living in large, popular metropolitan areas often exceeds that of smaller, less desirable hyped communities.

New Yorkers are proof that people are sheep. They have been convinced and therefore try to convince others that accepting crappy conditions is worth it, because at least it's expensive.

There isn't anything in NYC that can't be found somewhere else for less.

historycat: There isn't anything in NYC that can't be found somewhere else for less.

Bullshiat.

City living costs a lot of money, regardless of what city you live in. The density and quality of jobs, entertainment, and everything else is directly proportional to the cost of rent/taxes/property.

Of course you can get all of the same luxuries in rural Kentucky, you just have to drive absurd distances for them.

I want to be a fashion designer. Could you direct me to any apartments within walking distance of schools and studios in...Oklahoma? And I'm a bit of a foodie so there should be a good number of outstanding restaurants within reach as well. And if you could find me several options for live entertainment every night, that's be super.

I did the same thing in Chicago in a slightly bigger place -- a 180 sq ft U-shaped apartment (with kitchen) on Clark St in Lincoln Park. Since I was consulting and used the space as a weekend crash pad, I didn't care.

/rent was $365 a month
/ceiling loft had enough room for reverse cowgirl

Living in a city where you are stacked on top of each other is not simplifying. Living in an apartment where you have to own more stuff than the space is designed for - no matter how large or small - is not simplifying. Paying $8.34 per square foot a month is not simplifying (My town home would be $12k at that rate).

Try living in that space in Kearney Nebraska and I will start to think you know something about simplifying.

I live in a town of about 200,000, and I have all of that. It's not within walking distance, but there's little enough traffic that I can probably get there as fast by car as you get to wherever by foot. Plus, I have tons of farmland surrounding the city meaning I can buy my food directly from the folks who grew it. If I want excellent theater, it's about a 25 minute drive to one of the biggest meccas for quality theater in the country.

Plus I get more house for less money, even when you factor in the costs of having a car.

I have no idea why New Yorkers feel this desperate need to justify the choices they make by pretending their city is magically better than anywhere else.

I currently live in the middle of Columbus, and have 2000 sq feet for alot less than she's paying.

I can walk to one of the high end restaurants in town, there is a thriving theater district here and in Cleveland. (Seriously check out the Theater district in Cleveland it's amazing.)

There isn't anything you can find in NYC, that I can't find a comparable here in Ohio. The only difference is the density and the cost. There are more of these places in NY and so that must be better right?

It's the Apple Fanboi defense. I pay more and it's got a logo so it must be better.

While I appreciate the work you've done laying out the food and entertainment options of your respective towns (even though there are still way more options in NYC), there's also the elephant of employment in the room. The best possible job markets for artists, designers, writers, "professional organizers," etc. like her are still in big cities like NY, LA, and Chi where more people are willing to pay more money for such, um, "unconventional" job skills. No use having all that wide open space if you can't maintain it with a fulfilling career.

It's always funny to see the NYC haters here. Simply put, there are only a few great cities in the world- and New York is the preeminent one. Sorry small city lovers, but that local restaurant you love so much? NYC has a 500 of them. That local theatre that is so good? NYC has dozens. That concert you are going to next month? NYC has 4 or 5 this weekend, and every weekend.

While there are lots of reasons to like your small city- cost, ease of commutes, access to natural outdoor environs, don't try to win against NYC when it comes to those things that a city is supposed to do- you won't succeed.

How does she have sex in that bed??

i'd want a bit more liebensraum than that.

But folks,

If we don't get our population growth under control NOW we'll ALL be living like that.

PacManDreaming: Yeesh...my computer room is bigger than her apartment. Heck, my master bathroom and walk-in closets are bigger than her apartment. She should move to Texas. She could get a 2000 sq. ft. house for $700 a month.

The Great EZE: While I appreciate the work you've done laying out the food and entertainment options of your respective towns (even though there are still way more options in NYC),

That's a false comparison, because while NYC obviously has vastly more choices, New Yorkers always talk about how everything's a short walk away.

When you use THAT measure, I've got at least as much in a short drive's distance as NYers have in their short walks distance.

there's also the elephant of employment in the room. The best possible job markets for artists, designers, writers, "professional organizers," etc. like her are still in big cities like NY, LA, and Chi where more people are willing to pay more money for such, um, "unconventional" job skills. No use having all that wide open space if you can't maintain it with a fulfilling career.

I live in a tech town. We've got RIM (the company behind Blackberries), the Perimeter Institute (one of the premier theoretical science groups in the world), two universities, the Institute of Quantum Computing who are at the forefront of that research, etc.

We've also got several small communities nearby which are nationally renowned for their local artisans, if you're more into the arts than the sciences.

I find your claim that you can find a more fulfilling career in NYC to be somewhat laughable. How many New Yorkers end up working as wait staff or what have you because they moved there expecting one of those magically awesome jobs but it never managed to actually work out?
