In the field of epidemiology, it truly is a virus-eat-virus world.

Headline is a great troll. No Thing reference, but instead references to things that have nothing to do with viruses or Antarctica.

Great question. How can I put a patent on the anti-virus virus?
I don't know anything about RNA or DNA, but the Happy Birthday guy probably didn't know how to write music.

virophages only work on really big virii - like the ones mentioned. HIV is a really small virus.

Pox virii on the other hand...

...yeah, all the big ones, we already have a handle on anyway, really. Do you really feel at risk of catching smallpox if you have sex with a girl you met from a bar? Didn't think so.

IlGreven: I'm just waiting for the isotope that has a quarter-life instead of a half-life.

they all do. It's twice the half-life. After (halflife period) there's half as much. Then, after (halflife period) half the new total is gone - which leaves a quarter of the original. So, it's (halflife period) * 2.

I mean...really? Is set-rate decay hard?

The problem with the herpes virus is the way it effects the DNA of infected cells. Rather than simply create copies of itself until it destroys the cell, like many viruses do, it modifies the DNA of the host cells to replicate copies as part of its normal processing. This means that even while no virus is present in the body, the modified DNA of previously infected cells will still make some more viruses at a later time when the modified DNA is used by the cell for another process.

This seems rather diabolical, until you realize it can be applied through genetic engineering into a virophage like the one in TFA. It is conceivable that we may genetically engineer a virus to be created by the body at regular intervals to destroy other specific viruses that infect the body, creating a permanent artificial immune system that would work in tandem with the natural one. The best part is the way the virus can be engineered to prevent mutations of itself by eating them and thus causing the mutated virus to produce corrected viruses again.

Beyond that, engineered viruses have the potential to change the DNA of effected cells to do almost anything, including the production of stem cells, which could be used to effect real regeneration of limbs, organs, and tissues which currently cannot be restored by modern medicine.

Truly, we are on the brink of an age of medical miracles which will make our current medicine seem as primitive as the sawing of gangrenous limbs.
