Really? An untrained, unmotivated rabble is getting is ass kicked by a well-trained, motivated, well-equipped army? Huh. Wow. Will wonders never cease.

Obama and the French will have some ships full of arms into Benghazi soon enough. Then we can sit back and watch the afternoon delight.

Are they going to train the rebels on how to use them as well?

I wonder if they'll learn the third time a steady advance works best. Logistics, how the fark do they work?

naval barrages

If we declare a "no sail" zone the Navy will get its first chance to sink something big in a long time.

When was the last time the U.S. Navy sank something in the warship class instead of the raft class?

I shouldn't be laughing at this but I couldn't help myself while watching the NBC Nightly News last night. They did a report showing the rebels fleeing as Daffy's troops moved in and it looked like the land rush scene in Far and Away only with cars and trucks. It was farking hilarious.

It's not a retreat, it's an operative maneuver in retrograde.

This is a total clusterfark. Gaddafi isn't falling like the coalition thought he would, in fact, they are going to have to arm and train the rebels, which is going to take months, and could have seriously negative consequences (because we don't know who the fark they are, we're just assuming they're the good guys).

I was pretty neutral on the strikes to begin with, but looking at it now... oh boy are we farked.

Huh, before the Bombing for Peace and Great Justice campaign began wasn't this "army" no more than a bunch of mercenaries who had no motivation beyond money and who would flee at the first sign of the mighty coalition?

Now, they're well-trained, motivated and well-equipped. What gives?

Makes you wonder what those US Marines being deployed off the Libyan coast are really for.

Give and take in an armed conflict? The only possible explanation for this sort of unprecedented event is a failure on the part of the Fartbama administration's foreign policy stance.

Richard Engel is doing a report right now on NBC and talking about how he witnessed the rebels firing a rocket today. Instead of shooting it towards the enemy, it flew backwards into the town they were defending.

It'll be pretty funny when the rebels are obliterated. I'm going to be amused watching the show that follows.

I hope they all die and Qadaffi wins so that Obama looks bad. Vote Republican

Guess it's time to put boots on the ground huh. USA! ALL THE WAY!

We broke it too, so now I guess we also have to buy it. Good thing we have a budget surplus from clint-- oh... nevermind. Forgot about Iraq and Aphganistan. We blew a load of trillions of dollars there.

You know who also lost a war on 3 fronts?

Next week's headline: Rebels retake cities across eastern Lybia.

A week later: Rebels retreat, appear beaten.

Another week later: Rebels retake cities across eastern Lybia.

It sounds to me like the rebels overextended themselves after allied bombing opened things up for them. They blitzed without the krieg.

Well, it's in the MSM's (I hate the term but what else is there?) interest to make this appear as unprecedented as possible.

A good number of these "rebels" are former Libyan military. They're not totally inexperienced idiots, but they're also unlikely to have had significant live-fire experience against an equal-or-better force in large numbers. Book learnin' vs practical experience could be an issue here, as you say.

The U.S.S. Oriskiny, oh right. That was the Discovery Channel.

On the bright spot, The Rebels really don't have a winner...so Quadaffi's gonna have a hard time defeating them decisively.

But yeah...wars don't usually go like any script. So there's that.

All you anti-war Obama-naughts out there, sorry your guy lied to you. Will you let him get away with it and just fall in line like good little sheeple or are you going to go 3rd or 4th party next election? Do you really care about peace or just beating republicans in elections? It is all a matter of priorities and values.

So what happens if this rebel uprising ends up getting quashed? I'm pretty sure Gadhafi isn't going to look at our air strikes, aggressive stances, and harsh criticism and laugh it off and continue being friends with us.

You can be damn sure if he doesn't get overthrown, we're going to see a new (once thought old) breed of terrorist being made in Libya with their sights set on western countries that helped the rebel forces. Probably starting with whatever country decided to lead the strike.

You can also expect Gadhafi to try once again to acquire a nuke. And this time maybe he'll have the balls to use it, now that we know he has a martyr mentality, and now that we've shown him that he can be in a position to be overthrown. And that the rest of the nuclear-armed countries want to see him gone.

But all of that doesn't matter, right? The rebels are going to win and the entire people of Libya will want to be our friends forever and ever and sel us cheap oil and offer to produce vacation packages for their friends in the west, and there will be no consequences whatsoever for choosing sides in this crisis, right?

Right?

Spanky_McFarksalot: France will arm the rebels, since they aren't part of NATO the U.S. can say they did it without our ok.

France re-joined NATO's military council in 1995 and fully rejoined NATO in 2009.

So any French arms funneled to the rebels will be under the auspices of NATO (and ultimately American command).

Viva la France!

Here's (new window) a report that sheds some light on who our new Libyan "friends" might be. Regardless of whether we went in to this with the best of intentions or rank self-interest, we shouldn't fool ourselves about the potential risks of involving ourselves in a place we don't bother to know much about.

Either those "analysts" we have in D.C. need to be replaced, or our dumbass-stubborn politicians need to start friggin listening to what they have to say, because this sort of thing is becoming alarmingly common.

I'm getting the feeling that any help we give the rebels is just delaying the inevitable. I just plain don't think they're strong enough to pull it off whether we help or not.

Forget comparing it to Afghanistan, forget comparing it to Rwanda as I've heard. I'm starting to think this ends like Somalia. We go in, give it a go, but we just plain lose right along with the people we're trying to help.
