In high school a classmate that everyone liked died a car accident. Seniors can have their own parking spots if they wanted to pay for it, and he had one. A ton of people used the spot as a little memorial, so it was covered in pictures, flowers, etc.

Some asshat whipped into the parking lot and parked there, on top of everything, smashing roses and picture frames. Some seniors took one of their trucks, got a chain and dragged the guys car into a dirt lot and went to town on it with baseball bats.

Good times.

FTA: The Commodore station wagon, which slammed into a pole on Bulban Rd...

Oh, come on. That's not a horrible accident, that's just an ordinary accident.

Now, if they'd driven through a razor blade factory and crashed into a vat of lemon juice--flammable lemon juice--and then, after the car burst into flames, the noise awakened a group of angry, rapist bears who mauled them repeatedly while auditing their taxes, that would be a horrible accident.

Car, pole, meh.

A couple years ago, three guys (between 18-22) were hauling ass down the freeway in my town at 2am. One ran into the back of a van (the speed limit is 65 mph at night) and was killed. The crash caused the other two riders to lose control, killing one of them.

One of the dead was a recent high school graduate, and a few months after the deaths I was going to dinner in his town. There, I saw a truck with a decal reading "Ride 'em like ____." All I could think was "Maybe you should AVOID 'riding 'em' like him, seeing as how he killed himself."

So, just because someone loses his life due to recklessness, there will always be people who admire those Darwinesque actions.

Years back there was some kid that snapped on a plane and tried to open the door. He was body slammed and ended up dying because on of these guys hold him down was standing on his neck, which killed him. The guy went to Cheyenne high school here in Vegas and a buddy knew him. All over the new was about how he was the sweetest guy that would never hurt a fly and was loved by all. My buddy was at my place at the time and we were watching this on the news. My buddy chuckled and said the guy was the biggest asshat in the school and was universally hated by all. He had no friends because of the way he treated people.

Whenever I hear the "loved by all" thing on the news I immediately dismiss it.

[Equally touching tribute to Sherman Raftenberg, a college student who died after failing to jump over a steam-venting manhole on a dare]:

Upon arrival, one of the organizers opened up the manhole cover and shouted down, "Come out, Come out." Then a few re-enacted what they believed to have happened. "Jump over it Sherman!" and "Go for it Sherman" individuals yelled. "All right, whose going to do the countdown?' somebody yelled from the crowd. An undergraduate Geology major volunteered. At 10:45, all 14 screamed for 18 seconds. Then the geology major yelled," Happy Sherman T. Raftenberg Day everybody," and all clapped. Afterwards, they went to Friendly's.

Exactly. When my best friend died 2 years ago we rented out an entire bar and had a concert/party. One of the wildest parties I've been too- and I've been to plenty.

I mean, certainly a lot of us were in tears at times... but all in all we had an awesome time.

That's exactly what I'd want people to do.

A kid I went to high school with was run over by his best friend during a party on a dirt road. His friend had no license because of previous DUI's and was driving with no headlights on. Came over the hill doing about 50 and killed him instantly. To honor his memory they put a stainless steel cross on the side of the road which people still leave beer cans on while out drunk driving. And people wonder why I don't like the people I went to school with.

Cmon, I highly doubt the other kids died while doing a donut. Donuts are basically a low-speed manuever. You would have to be very unlikey or idiotic to get killed doing a donut.

It's weird, it's almost like youth, when confronted with their own mortality, often react by trying to conquer their fear by turning it into something to be celebrated or joked about. It's almost like familiarity with a tragedy or reenacting it symbolically takes the power away from the fear of death.

You know, the almost same reason we joke about tragedy on Fark and ALSO use Fark to organize relief efforts and to encourage charity.

Almost, but they were kids so f' those disrespectful hooligans amiright?
