Slappajo: I can understand why people might not like UK, but you have to like Harrellson.

He's my favorite player since the Unforgettables (1992).

Maybe in a thread thats not the 2011 NCAA tournament elite eight thread

I mean, I guess you can go on and on about UK's racist history from 60 years ago, Cals violations from past teams and past years and all, I'm just not sure its super relevant in an NCAA 2011 tourney thread

I've heard the very same from people who used to be in his vicinity when he lived in Portland.

I bet he got beat up a lot when he was a kid.

Had UK lost in the 1966 Final Four all-white Duke would've lost to Texas Western.

SEC had a white's only rule.
Rupp coached black players prior to UK & in international play.
Rupp also recruited Beard in 1964, who would've been UK's & the SEC's first black player. Beard went to Louisville at the last minute. Part of his reasoning was when you played Alabama the visiting team's hotel was across from KKK headquarters.

I liked Glory Road too, but it's not a documentary.

Never seen the movie, and I can totally believe a conference made of teams from georgia and alabama and the south in general of being racist even into the 70's.

This is accurate. Rupp, for the era, was somewhat progressive.

Of course, being from the northernmost state in the conference, this should be somewhat expected.

It was pretty common for UK fans to call Louisville the blackbirds all the way up to the mid-80s or so, because they've always recruited black players.

And just so ya know, capnmonkey, I'm not calling you racist. I'm just having fun with ya :P

One of those doubters was one of Kansas' vaunted Morris twins - Marcus or Markieff.

During a captains meeting with officials before tipoff, VCU guard Joey Rodriguez said one of the brothers offered him some parting words: "The run ends here."

"We'll see," Rodriguez shot back.

Wow that is douchey.

Coach_J: I've said it before (right jayhawk88?) and I will say it again.

"Bill Self is a world-class recruiter (cause he hires all the top recruit's Dads and/or HS/AAU Coaches...but that's another story) but he can't coach a cat to shiat in a box"

You can't ask for a easier path to the FF and another Bill Self team comes out flat, doesn't execute for shiat and voila! He has pissed away another All-World talented team.

Hard for me to put this one on Self. Someone needs to get him a copy of "Zone Defense for Dummies", I'll grant you, but you're not beating St. Mary's School for the Blind if you shoot 35%/9%/53%. No amount of coaching solves that problem. I gotta say, I actually feel a little bit better about the loss seeing percentages like that.
