From FTA:

Customers have a choice between a Hi-Point 380 pistol, 20-gauge shotgun or a $50 Pizza Hut gift certificate. Those who don't qualify for the gun can get the pizza gift certificate.

So you have the choice between a pistol worth $135 (according to Hi-Point's website), a shotgun which is probably a couple hundred bucks or $50 worth of crappy pizza.

I'd take the shotgun.

It's kinda you get what you pay for. If you want a $130.00-140.00 pistol then a Hi Point 380 is for you.

You want something nicer then expect to pay more.

Happy Hours: Would the shotgun make for better home defense?

Always. Shotguns are the best overall weapons for home defense because they are easy to aim (you have it in the general area that is good enough) they don't over penetrate walls like some guns, and the noise they make chambering a round is rather intimidating and may do the trick itself. If you are legitimately worried about home defense, a shotgun is the best choice.

Also in terms of cost, that would probably be the way to go with this. Semi-automatic pistols are fairly expensive when done right because they are complex. Pump action shotguns are much cheaper because they are more simple, despite being larger. So you might discover that a good semi-auto pistol costs you, say, $500 whereas a good shotgun might only run you $250. Those are just example numbers but that is the kind of thing you'll find.

In terms of that pistol Hi-point is not known for their quality guns and .380 auto is not a particularly good round. It does not have sufficient power to have a good chance of disabling or killing someone with a non-critical (as in not in the heart, head, etc) shot. That's why you see very little of it. 9x19mm is far more used, despite being slightly smaller.

2011-03-26 08:04:52 PM
Can you use the gift certificate as part of an alternative gun purchase? For example can I get $135.00 off the purchase of say Remington Model 870™ Express?

If so it would be a great deal for me.

Id be wary of a $135 pistol. You are probably better off trying to beat a burglar over the head with it.

The slides on Hi Point pistols are made of an aluminum-zinc alloy (zamac3). This requires them to be considerably larger than a conventional steel slide. They feel as top-heavy as they look. Their 380 is larger than Glock's smallest .40. Their carbines have a bit better reputation. I'd take a 20ga over the Hi Point.

I agree. The Walther P-38 is awesome. I went to a touristy place in AZ years ago called 'Old Tucson'. They used to make western movies there. Anyway, in the middle of the place was a three bedroom ranch home with nothing in it but walls full of P-38's. Weird.

Igor Jakovsky: Id be wary of a $135 pistol. You are probably better off trying to beat a burglar over the head with it.

I have a Hi Point 45 I bought 15 years ago when I was a broke college student. It is so heavy it could also double as a boat anchor. It is very rugged and only has 2 moving parts it is hammerless, the barrel is not removable. The gun does have its problems for example it will jam after 20 rounds due to the heat deforming the ejector port, this only happens when shooting brass, aluminum cased target rounds do not jam.

All in all it is a safe gun and will do its job in close quarters (15 feet or less)but I would never recommend buying one.

I own the Hi Point 9 mm, and I would have used it as my first concealed carry except for one teensy weensy problem... It chews the shiat out of the web of my thumb, so in a high pressure situation I don't need to be distracted by a self-inflicted gash in my shooting hand. That ENTIRE upper portion is the slide, it's not breaking in half anywhere, so that pig chunk of plastic is gonna just rip into you over and over again, no matter how you change the grip.
