TheDirtyNacho: exvaxman: Does anyone else remember when A&F was the most awesome outfitter?
When in fifth grade I was tasked to do a report on an elephant gun. My father took me to A&F where they let me try and hold one and explained it all to me. I always thought that the outfitter in "Joe Vs. The Volcano" was based on them. Awesome things. Until the day I die I will always remember the smell of leather in the place. That and the salesman who was kind enough to take the time to deal with a 5th grader who showed me what he thought was cool - a $25K fly rod and reel BACK THEN!!!!! (1970's).

Or when Banana Republic sold safari clothing and military surplus gear.

Looks older, but circa 1986:

Came in here to say something like that... A&F used to be the distributor for Holland & Holland Gunleather back in the day. Grade A high end gear.

Banana Republic used to have the best field gear, too. I still have a couple of the old-time Banana Republic expedition shirts. BIG pockets, lots of room for everything you needed, sturdy and breathable.

WTF happened to these places?

I've always thought it was the conservatives getting bent out of shape over topless five year-olds werethe ones sexualizing the kids.

You can still find early BR outdoor wear for sale out there, aging nicely. It was well made and classically tailored.

GAT_00: So, don't buy them. What's the problem? Would Fox like the government to intervene in the free market and tell this company what they can and cannot produce?

Uh, so that means that is isn't disgusting for A&F to be selling this? I don't anyone is trying to ban these things, just pointing out how wacked out the fashion industry has been in recent years when it comes to sexualizing kids.

I find it very interesting that, at a time when the US becomes increasingly concerned about the dangers of molestation (to the point of hysteria, in a few cases), mainstream culture is simultaneously increasing its perverse sexualization of minors. Does the latter feed the former? Or are we just schizophrenic in our attitudes towards sex?

/Abercrombie & Fitch needs to die in a fire

So long as the padding isn't beyond reason I don't see a problem here. I don't believe that padded bikini tops can or would make any difference to a predator with a perverse attraction. Also, if your child is that young you worry about them being abused or assaulted why don't you WATCH OVER THEM WHILE THEY ARE AT THE POOL and take some personal responsibility instead of blaming this kind of thing on 1/2 inch of cotton/poly padding.

Wouldn't a perv find bare nipples more attractive than a slightly larger bust anyway? Someone here must surely know. HAVE A SEAT OVER THERE AND TELL US ALL ABOUT IT.

That's what I was thinking. The point of padding in a lot of bras-type wear is hiding nipples, not necessarily enhancing cleavage. We all know how pokies can get people fired up.

Also, size and maturity vary person to person. Some may need a bit of a cup(from the bra/bikini top, you pervs), some won't.

Typical and needless outrage. (Also, this is a repeat from a while back, I think it's cyclical, just saw an outrage thread about Duke Nukem as well.)

[from above] Last time I trust spell check ;-)

optimistic_cynic: So why the hell shouldn't they just put ages 12-14? There is no reason to include the younger age ranges.

Kids clothing is often sized partially by age groups. No idea why or how that started, but that's how it's done.

So 8-14 is really a group of sizes typical for a girl aged 8-14. Some girls will be beyond that set well before 14, some will not.

Infancy is even more bizarre as kids grow at strange rates sometimes. So a 6 month old might be wearing clothing for a 12-14 month old... but still be perfectly healthy.

Again, don't know why this system started, or even if it's a US thing, or a world wide thing.

I suspect they put 8-14 since that's the size it falls in.

This looks like exactly the answers. If people don't buy them, the market dries up, the slacker store for rich kids (A&F) closes, and life is better for everyone - because now douchebags will have to dress like normal people.

Women, gay guys, and teenagers spend a hell of a lot more on clothes than expeditioners, and expect much lower quality. The market noticed.

...I'm thinking it's that last bit. Simultaneous messages that you have to be hot and sexy, yet never, ever, EVER give in, because that would make you a bad girl.

As for Banana Republic, it's a subsidiary of The Gap, now. Given its history, I presume it used to be independent and then was just bought by The Gap at some point?

I got kicked out for talking loudly to my friend which was bull shiat because other people were screaming across the store. Granted, I was saying "Abercrombie, made for kids, by kids for 5 cents an hour." and "I wonder if I would get a discount if I found a Chinese 5 year old's finger sewn into my pants. Nah, I think they would say that's the new style and charge extra."

I had a 2-piece swimsuit when I was a child, and that was back in the 1960s. However, bikini style swimsuits weren't marketed to children back then, nor were the tops padded to enhance our non-existent breasts.

I purchased two thongs for my daughter from Victoria Secrets a few weeks ago. It was from the PINK side but she wanted a thong. I had to pick them out and pay for them, she was afraid to do so.

A 40 year old male standing in line at Victoria Secrets with two thongs in his hand is pretty amusing.

To many adults have serious sexual hang ups and I find that sad.

Would I purchase one of these for my daughter if she asked? Yes, I would.

In this case, YES. The sexualization of children has to stop somewhere.

Ah, so you're all for the free market except when it produces something that YOU personally find repugnant? It's easy to defend someone's right to wear a blue shirt. The real challenge is being willing to defend someone's right to wear a Klan robe.

I was built like a stick of gum until I was about 17. My best friend was the only one in 4th grade with boobs. She's about the same size today as a grown woman - pretty modest in size. I know she went to great pains to cover them up - as much as I hated being flat in my teens, I understand her angst as a kid and that is something I did not envy.

Replica thread from last week?

Anyways as I said then, different kids have different body sizes I always looked 3-4 years younger until I was almost 14.

Never worried about being too small chest wise as I was wearing my mom's C 34 bras by 13/14 when she shrank back down to A?B after my brother got weaned. Depressed I was so chesty, as I was shy and geeky tho.

zephman: While they may be for girls "as young as 8 years old" I suspect (having once been a flat chested pre-teen myself) that this is geared more towards the 12-14 set. I personally have no problem with this, girls that age stuff their bras anyway in a bid to make their bodies look a bit more proportional, and what's wrong with it if it makes them feel a little less insecure? Anyone who believes that this is anything new should really check their history, at least it's not common practice anymore to lace little girls up in "stays" AKA corsets/girdles.

Do go on
